Description Editing this commentary down to the basics. I've brought this up again because it serves as the basis for a segement of animation in HTF's latest short animated film, Kumo Kuro. Keep an eye out for it.

-EDIT- Because of the way DA handled GIF animations back when this was uploaded, you must Download the file (which just opens it in a new browser window) to see the animation. Sorry 'bout that.

At any rate, I'm fairly satisfied with this segment, enough to call it finished. Let me know if you think there's anything that still needs attention (besides the very opening cut... I know, it's fast, but I kinda like it that way for now).

Total time taken for this was about 12-16 hours of solid work... I wasn't keeping super-close track, but I busted out about 3-4 hours a night over 4 nights to get to this point. All Easytoon and 4x5 tablet.

Yep. I've since upgraded, but when I did this all I had was a li'l 4x5 Graphire.

ah. I want to upgrade to a 6x8 intuos..but not sure if it's completely worth it. Does size matter? (when it comes to tablets)
Did you have problems while using it to draw/paint? (4x5 I mean)

I must admit, when I went up to the 9x12 I felt a lot more comfortable with drawing. I think it's just because I have a wider surface that feels less cramped, and the 9x12 is closer in comparitive size to my monitor, so there's a closer 1:1 ratio between the movement of my arm and wrist and the lines that result on screen.

Hey this animation har rythme, awesome, i listened to a son at the same time as i watched this and it turns out he hits the other guys at a symetric rythme with the song, cool

Did you know that?

Great work by the way

I'm not surprised. Espescially if the song you were listening to had a decently fast beat. Which song?

Velvian In reply to Inkthinker [2006-09-24 13:27:09 +0000 UTC]

Southern cross, there were some times it hit perfectly and others not, but it was cool anyway.

awesome animation . . . he moves so fast and it has so much energy. it's hard to believe that he dispatches so many people in such a small amount of time. fave.

Its nothing compared to what you've done here, but I just had to share what I've done with Easytoon since your animation inspired me to download it [link]

Inkthinker In reply to jaredsevilclone [2006-04-28 22:52:38 +0000 UTC]

It's pretty cool... I espescially like the bit where one guy swings the other around in a big circle. It's a good start!

When beginning, I think it's not really good to think of your work in comparison to others... it's usually not a fair contest. I think it's more important to just concentrate on making something good enough that you like it. If you're into what you create, then it's a good bet someone else will be too.

Keep working at it! It takes years and a lot of obsessive study to get good at anything, espescially something like hand-drawn animation, so don't expect it to happen fast... just stay with it.

well, i'm not too worried about it really, i love my animation and am getting a little better at it all the time. it takes a lot ot time though, i wish i could do some work at home! once again though, serious congrats on yours, i'd pick a favorite part and tell you i like it but the whole thing is too damn good.

Inkthinker In reply to MoXeDana [2006-04-05 06:36:01 +0000 UTC]

I figured as much... I think it's more that there's just not enough exaggeration of the impact that kills it some, but it's not something I really want to go back and mess with again. It is what it is at this point.

MoXeDana [2006-04-05 03:03:55 +0000 UTC]

i really like your picese, it's very nice but i thionk that there is one think that u might want to concider. when he's hitting the second guy with the staff it looks a litle odd. the staging is kinda hard kuz the movement is on the other side of the camera and it's covered by other stuff but i think that if U give a bit more of twisting in the torso and a bit more of exageretaion and anticipation on the turning arround it could work. also i suppose that with a hit like that the guy should fly off a bit further.
(I do 3d Anim that is much more flexible to correct )

However GREATE PIECE DUDE! NICE WORK

Used the freeware Easytoon for this, you can find it with a little Google action. It's best to have a tablet when using it, but it's not required.

I'm a little late on the commenting of this piece. I saw it when it was first posted after all. Anyhow, I really cant give you any more praise than you've already received, so I'll leave it at that. I do hope you could answer a question though!

This looks like straight-ahead animation... did you plan the camera moves, or did you just play on unintentional drift? I'm having a fit trying to figure out how to make a decent camera rotation !

By the By. Have you ever tried a little piece of animation software called 'Plastic Animation Paper' ? Its what I'm currently using, and Its the best I've found for the task so far.

XD that's awesome! nice work!
I'm thinking a few pauses in some spots would accentuate the acting and subconciously make the viewers prepared for what's comming next. (not long pauses but short intervals that show that the character's thinking.- like noticing there's a guy behind him) That way it wouldn't seem as fast.
a few settles (like the last part with the guy catching the other guy's arm) would really add to it
I hope to see more of this XD

Inkthinker In reply to qiqo [2005-09-22 18:50:43 +0000 UTC]

Part of the pain of using this software is that all the old "tricks" I've learned are largely unavailable... no layering, difficult to create holds, and so forth... it does wonders to work on a man's timing, though.
