Description
3rd in the series of works from a few years ago. I know I've misquoted the joke about Rincewind's ability to scream for help, and just plain scream... but I can't find the original, so I can't fix it. Anyone know what book it's from?Related content

I love the hat - it's been through alot!
I think the original quote was from interesting times - AAAH meaning 'more boiling hot oil please' i think!

The phrase is from Interesting Times, Ridcully (the Archcancellor) is telling him that at least he knows the languages. The entire note should be this:
"This at least was true. Rincewind could scream for mercy in nineteen languages, and just scream* in another forty-four.
* This is important. Inexperienced travellers might think that 'Aargh!' is universal, but in Betrobi it means 'highly enjoyable' and' in Howondaland it means, variously, 'I would like to eat your foot', 'Your wife is a big hippo' and 'Hello, Thinks Mr Purple Cat.' One particular tribe has a fearsome reputation for cruelty merely because prisoners appear, to them, to be shouting 'Quick! Extra boiling oil!' "
I used your image in my personal blog and linked it to this page...
Bravo!!!

Aw, HELL yeah. Thanks so much for finding that for me! In my own US paperback edition (now that I know which book it was), it's on page 51, in the footnotes.
I love Pratchett's footnotes... they're one of my favorite parts of any Discworld novel.
Thanks again!

I'm fond of Vimes, myself, but I got a soft spot for Rincewind if for nothing else but nostalgia.

I know the original quote, "AAARRGH!!" is supposed to mean, "quick, more boiling oil." I'm pretty sure it's in either Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, or Interesting Times.

I think it's Interesting Times, 'cause I think it's somewhere before the point where he get's rescued from a future of potatoes.

I remember trying to talk my DM into letting me have a luggage at some point -- there's just something irresistable about a chest that has a multi-dimensional interior, a 100 feet, a temper, and eats people. Hell, I could use one of those in real life, would probably keep me from misplacing my shit all the time.

You know there's a GURPS Discworld RPG, right?
It's probably about the only RPG you'd ever get me to play, but I'd never find a DM as good as Pratchett.

That there is some absolutely lovely drawing. It's always great to see different takes on the Discworld characters too, and I love the bauble hanging from the point of his hat!

I'm pretty sure that the quote is from "Interesting Times"
btw. I would never imagine Rincewind looking like that, but maybe I've just watched too much Kirby's and Kidby's works
