Description
Tentatively done with this... I'll likely let it sit for a few days, but even I can tell this still needs something. I think I may apply tones to it, since Manga Studio has such a rich library of 'em. We'll see what I do with that when and if I get to it.Done in my spare time, probably took about 12 hours, all in Manga Studio EX with an Intuos. There's a ton of things I did wrong, but you can have the fun of finding 'em for yourself. There's some WIP versions in the Scraps, too, if you want to see some progressive shots.
Updates and revisions may occur, but if anyone feels like tackling it for color then have at it. Note that there's some interesting challenges to have fun with... two light sources, candles no less, a spinning steel blade, a whole bunch of fiddly gears to catch light and throw shadows, and some creative potential for textures and additional light sources from all the odd runes and such.
If you resize the aspect ratio, though, it makes a halfway nice wallpaper.

First of all, InkThinker, you are THE man. I'm a big fan of your work, and I pretend to be that good one day, hopefully.
I'm really impressed with the amount of detail in this piece, specialy the... how i'm gonna say that? My english sucks... inscriptions! Yes, the tribal inscriptions in all the mechanism! I mean, how the hell you draw such a thing? Did you use reference for that? I love this kind of design, but I suck at it. hehe
Keep up the good work!

The little runes ("inscriptions" is a good word, too) along the floor and so forth are just made-up squiggles... they're not from anything in particular, just a blend of different shapes.
Glad you like it!

Oh I like the very little details... I think I have fetish for them... hehe
U knowβ¦I had an idea back when I was in school to make an animation of somebody running through the dungeon with rotating floors, falling ceiling and endless pits. avoiding deadly arrows... and stuff like thatβ¦
this reminds me of it...

The sketchwork was done in Manga Studio as well. You can check in the Scraps to find it as well as some WIP versions that help show the process a little.

Awesome.. I love how this turned out..
I would like to see if making the gear "border" a halftone would make it better... The border gives it the cramped feeling you are probably going for.. but its SO strong it pulls away from the composition, i think.
Anyway.. still rawesome
π: 0 β©: 1
Inkthinker In reply to rolandvvv [2006-10-17 21:31:15 +0000 UTC]
It's probably also because there's so MUCH of the black border in this comp. If I trimmed the top and bottom to match the sides, it might not read so heavy...
At the same time, I do want that dark and cramped feeling, and with some shadows and tones I think the border will just help reinforce that.

rolandvvv In reply to Inkthinker [2006-10-18 00:23:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, trimming top&bottom border will make it better.. and the tones will bring the focus back to the "rogue" (the D&D rogue, which is what I can't help thinking of when I see this)
I can't wait to see someone color this

Love her expression! Had no idea thieves had it so tough, though: have to be a contortionist, a locksmith, a mechanical engineer... This is great pic, really leaves the viewer wondering if she's stopped the trap(s) with her dagger, if she's about to become two people, or what.

Alright, call me crazy, but doesn't it seem that every time a rogue is crawling through a booby-trap laden tunnel full of spikes, there's a dragon behind them? I'm totally seeing a ridiculous dragon singing her thong.... er.... i mean..... leg armor.....crotch armor? whatever.

Inkthinker In reply to Kungfubabies [2006-10-18 05:33:13 +0000 UTC]
Actually I imagine all the other adventurers hanging around the little tunnel entrance complaining about how long it's taking to pick those locks.
