Description
Tentatively done with this... I'll likely let it sit for a few days, but even I can tell this still needs something. I think I may apply tones to it, since Manga Studio has such a rich library of 'em. We'll see what I do with that when and if I get to it.Done in my spare time, probably took about 12 hours, all in Manga Studio EX with an Intuos. There's a ton of things I did wrong, but you can have the fun of finding 'em for yourself. There's some WIP versions in the Scraps, too, if you want to see some progressive shots.
Updates and revisions may occur, but if anyone feels like tackling it for color then have at it. Note that there's some interesting challenges to have fun with... two light sources, candles no less, a spinning steel blade, a whole bunch of fiddly gears to catch light and throw shadows, and some creative potential for textures and additional light sources from all the odd runes and such.
If you resize the aspect ratio, though, it makes a halfway nice wallpaper.

Meh... I think they're just overplayed. If you want to have one, you have to have a really good one.

Man this pic just plain out spanks everything else. The details and concept are incredible. Expecially like the spinning sawblade. Her expression is priceless too. I wish I had that amount of skill with the intuos tablet. Also I wish I could color cause I would love to see this with lighting and all. As far as things you messed up on I don't see anything. The black gears around the pic make for nice vignette (hope I spelled that right) type of effect. Good stuff.

How would you rate the drawing capabilities of a program like Manga Studio against something like photoshop? Do you prefer it for this kind of artwork?

For making comics, or even just for making ink illustrations, it's pretty awesome. I do like some of the tools in PS9, espescially the transform abilities, but there's a lot of advantages to Comic Studio, not the least of which are it's abilities to organize panels into Layer Sets and it's native 600dpi bitmap resolution, which makes it very easy to keep things crisp and clean. Luckily the two programs work very well together (Manga Studio both exports AND imports PSD files and even individual Layers) so I don't actually have to choose... I can use 'em both.

It helps a lot to rough it out first... break it down into rough shapes and then work towards a more defined form. Don't worry about being messy... just work on figuring out where the lines need to be to define the form.
Leastways, that's how I do it. Without a lot of rough sketching, I usually mess 'em up.

Yep. But the best I'm likely to do is lay down some greys, or maybe flat tones... It'll be up to someone more skilled than me with color to bring it to its best potential.
