Description
CAN YOU FIND ALL OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS IMAGE?I dredged this up from my archives. I think I did it around 2000, but can't remember. This took a lot of time. This is a composite of 4 photographs, each one using the same female model in a white jumpsuit, but in a different position on the tree. Then I used Photoshop to paint in her white jumpsuit for each shot.

This shoot was in the ANCIENT BRISTLECONE-PINE FOREST, in the Inyo National Forest, located between 10,000 and 11,000 feet in the White Mountains, east of the Sierra Nevada (California). These trees (Pinus longaeva) are the oldest known living trees on earth. Here in the White Mountains, the ancient trees have survived more than 40 centuries, exceeding the age of the oldest Giant Sequoia by 1,500 yrs.
The oldest one – Methuselah – has a confirmed age of 4,768 years. This dates to the time the Great Pyramid of Giza was completed in Egypt, at around 2600 BC, or 4609 years ago. This tree saw the beginning of the Bronze Age (1800 BC); Moses leading the Hebrews from Egypt (1300 BC); Greeks fought in the Trojan War (1194 BC); the city of Rome was founded (753 BC); Gautama Buddha achieved enlightenment and founded Buddhism in India (528 BC); Jesus Christ was born (1 AD); Muhammad founded Islam (610); King William conquered England (1066); Christopher Columbus landed in America (1492); and the United States declared independence (1774).
Each Bristlecone pine, from young seedling to ancient relic, has an individual character. Young trees are densely clad with glistening needle-covered branches that sway like foxtails in the wind. With their bristled cones dripping pine scented resin on a warm afternoon, they exude all the freshness of youth. As centuries pass and the trees are battered by the elements, they become sculpted into astonishingly beautiful shapes and forms. These"old age" gnarled Bristlecones command complete attention, for there is a definite emotional impact upon meeting a 4,000 year-old tree.
The aged trees tenacity to maintain life is impressive. While most of its wood is dead, growth barely continues through a thin ribbon of bark. When all life finally ceases, the snags stand like elegant ghosts for a thousand years or more. They continue to be polished by wind driven ice and sand. The dense wood is slowly eroding away rather than decaying.
Thin clear air and crisp ultraviolet light drench the high altitude arid slopes where the Bristlecone Pine makes its home. At this high elevation, one has the impression of a lunar landscape. The trees manage to survive in the poorly nourished, alkaline soil with a minimum of moisture and a forty-five day growing season. In fact, the trees longevity is linked to these inhospitable conditions. The trees grow very slowly, adding as little as an inch in girth in a hundred years.
Those that grow the slowest produce dense, highly resinous wood that is resistant to rot and disease, are more likely to join the Fraternity of the 4,000 year old Ancients. Not all Bristlecones attain great age. Trees anchored to more moist slopes grow fat and tall, produce less dense wood, and succumb at an earlier age. Long life is then granted to trees that are able to cling to life under situations of severe duress.

Yes, some idiot cut down the last oldest one. Many humans are so totally greed-based and/or self-centered that they have no care for nature or preserving the environment. I had a guide take us to the spot where I shot this image, using the one model. It was a major trek to get there. Luckily I had a big corporation sponsoring for it.

Did you spot all four models in the tree? This was extremely challenging to do, and thus a ton of fun. I was on a budget and it was a long trek to hike up, so I only had one model. The other challenge was the rapidly changing light while shooting the model in each of the 4 positions (in a white jumpsuit). Then I used Photoshop to merge and blend the composite shot, and then to paint the jumpsuits to camouflage them.
The RGB image on DA does not do the image justice, compared to the printed version. The original is done in CMYK, so translation of color in not fully accurate. I did the screening and plate separations myself. Frankly, it is the only truly major budget project I did.
I love trees with a passion. I love old gnarly trees, Bristlecone Pine, Joshua trees, Baobab Trees, Ginko trees, Birch trees, oaks tortured by the wind, Banyan trees, Mimosa Tree - Silk Tree, and on and on.
It is sad how Greedy and Destructive people are. The petrified a forest was decimated. Old growth forests decimated. People go to places like Italy, Greece, and Egypt and steal chunks of stone. Old roman roads are disappearing stone by stone.

at first i didn't notice the woman until i really looked. i like the marriage of the many dichotomous ideals: youth and age, human and plant, fragility and strength, soft skin and rough bark, natural and produced. then the wonderful play of the shapes and overall feeling of crisp, clean design. and the connectivity of human woman to ancient tree- their inter-relationships with reality, earth and life, itself...
have you had the chance to see the coastal cypress in california? amazing character and quiet majesty. i can see them as wise sentinels of earthly life, enduring thru the centuries and countless seasons and man's pretentious infancy to simply experience the power of life.

Your description is very nicely said.
Did you notice all 4 models in the tree? There is one on the ground level (lower right), on on the main trunk (center), One in the upper left branches and one in the upper right branches.
Yes, the Coast Cypress is amazing. It was the one I was thinking of when I talked about the wind-tortured and twisted trees. I grew up up Souther and Northern California, and went to College (the Academy) near San Francisco.

I did not want to hide them too well, or people would not see them.
I was born on the East coast and lived there for my fist 7 years, in Maryland. Maryland is the State that declared me to be Mentally Retarded, when I was actually Autistic. I hate to think of how many Autistic people were institutionalized. We moved to the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. Later we moved to Danville and Walnut Creek (back when they were all rolling hills and cattle). Then back to Souther California. Then I went to the Maritime Academy in Vallejo.

Hi Grace,
Thank you for your interest. We should talk here first, before I give out my email address.
I do volunteer Peer Counseling to LGBTQ youth. Is there something you would like help with?
We can talk in PRIVATE here on DA, using NOTES.
To send me a NOTE, go to my DA page . In the upper right corner you will see a Button (has a yellow icon) that says, "Send A Note." Click on that button, compose your note to me and click on the Send button.
To see if I have answered your Note, go to your DA home page . Look in the dark green bar across the top of your DA page, then look just to the right of where is says, "Deviant goodlook141." If it says, "1 Note," then put your curser on top of it. A menu should drop down and you can choose "Notes." You will see my answer there and you can reply to it.
All the best,
Matthew

Yes, it is a very beautiful species of tree and I really liked this one in particular. Did you read the information about the tree and how these are the oldest trees on the planet?
Another tree I like a lot is the Baobab Tree [link]
I am also very fond of Birch and weeping birch trees. I have always been fascinated by trees. I grew up in an area where the streets were lined with Eucalyptus trees, then Northern California with rolling hills and windswept oak trees twisted into amazing shapes.

The tree in this image was very difficult to get to and the most difficult shoot or job I ever did.

Thanks. I did not get very many jobs that gave me a budget to go into the field and actually hire a model. It was a lot of fun getting to the location and shooting it, despite the usual stresses of worrying about weather, light, time, etc. I used the same model for all of the shots, in the white jumpsuit, and then composited them. The biggest challenge was that the light was rapidly changing, so there was very little time we could take between shots.
The rendition for DA is not as good as the original, because the original is in CMYK for mass market print press, and it had to be converted to RGB for DA and they are different color spaces. So the colors do not convert exactly, and sometimes are fairly far apart.

This was grand fun. Did you find all of the models in the tree, there are 4? I used one model in a white jumpsuit and shot the scene 5 times. The biggest challenge was time and the changing light as positions were changed and fiddled with, trying to get them right. Then I painted the white jumpsuits to blend in.

Thank you. To bring the cost of the shoot down, which was in a remote location, I used just one model in a white jumpsuit, then shot her in four positions. I later composited the shots together and used photoshop to camouflage the white jumpsuits. Then I enhanced color and atmosphere. This was full of symbolism for me. It was run as a two page ad, with the mage on one page and text on the other. It ran in a few magazines many years ago.

They blend in almost TOO perfectly; I'm glad you left out their feet & faces so as to spot the people in the first place & appreciate this piece to the extent it must be appreciated! xD I can't imagine the work you put into the detail.. Superb job!
I have a huge fascination & love for trees.. The tree itself is a beautiful work of art in nature. Thank you for this; it's downright one of the coolest things I've seen on DA.
You're truly an inspiring person. In so many ways. Stay brilliant~

Thanks, I love tress too. These are the oldest trees ever. The oldest one of all was cut down to see how old it was. People are so disappointing at times. Since you love trees, if you scan downward in the comments under the deviation, there is a discussion where we go back and forth talking about lots of other favorite trees, with lots of links to them.
Did you find all 4 of them? It is a long way to get to this tree. So there is only one model in a white jumpsuit shot 4 times, plus one with just the tree. They were then all composited into one, then the camouflage was added on the white jumpsuits. Alas, the color is not right. This is done in CMYK for printing, but DA can only do RGB of course, and the two do not translate well.
