Description
Johnny Test is actually one of my childhood shows, next to Total Drama. I used to watch all the seasons except Season 6. Even though I only watched partial of the seasons, I still have good memories of the show unlike The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.People say that this show is "very similar to Dexter's Laboratory", but I actually find this show similar to The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius because Dee Dee is incomparable to Johnny Test and besides, Dexter only owned a pet in some episodes like Jurassic Pooch and Dexter's Labor:a-story. But onto the main show itself, the pie chart looks better now with the final results showing more episodes given the rating "good", but there's still a lot of lukewarm episodes (48%) compared to the amount of at least good episodes (34%). Not only that, but the worst episodes are worse than Jimmy Neutrons, but not as terrible as Dexter's Laboratorys worst episodes. Speaking of Dexter, I also hated doing this scorecard, due to overnight working, but at least it's not as bad as the condition of Dexter's Laboratory scorecard. The pie chart says and the final rating for the show says that this show is better than the last 2, but the problem is, is that it's still lukewarm like Harvey Beaks.
To prove you guys, I'm going to talk about the writing:
So first, the writing seems more interesting and entertaining than the other 2 science cartoons I've mentioned. It actually fits into the show well while also acting generic as well. All I can say that this show had very good potential, but sadly wasted thanks to it being unfunny (yes, there's comedy in Johnny Test) and could sometimes feel boring. The storytelling is pretty divine, but Johnny Test needs to work on being funny. Speaking of funny, how are the jokes? They're kind of ample because the humor is like the other type of humor from other Canadian cartoons, but I can say that they can give the children grins. One of the best episodes of the show are actually really funny because of it feeling silly and how it depends on the characters to throw in some irony and good gags that can make anyone at least grin.
HOWEVER, I've seen that Chris Savino, the creator of The Loud House and the one that lead to the demise of Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls, was originally a supervising producer of the show. And what does that mean? The episodes are the same things over and over again. I've seen too much Johnny X, Johnny vs. Bling Bling, Johnny becoming successful due to one of his sisters' experiments, and Johnny and the gang battling each other in a competition (actually I enjoyed pretty much all of them because they're made to be different between one and another). This could be something to show that the writers are definitely out of ideas around the 6th season, and decides to knock around as many episode ideas ASAP. Not only that, but a few episodes of Johnny Test feel pretty similar to some episodes of the 2 science cartoons I've mentioned and The Fairly OddParents. Repetition is what prevented the writing from being solid to just nothing special. A few interesting episodes, but leaning towards meh. Seasons 4-5 got hit heavily with unoriginality, and while Season 6 improved, there are still other episodes that are similar to other episodes in the show. The writing here is better thanks to it being more interesting and entertaining, but this show sucks at variety.
Like how Avatar sucks at focus, Johnny Test's repetition is everywhere! Appears that it's creating a chain of lukewarm episodes. How about the quality?
The animation from Season 1 looks pretty dark than the usual flash animation used from Seasons 2-6. Since flash wasn't popular in 2005, the crew had to use digital ink & paint instead. Compared to The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius's animation, the colors aren't bland anymore. The animators now uses brighter-vibrant and fairly colorful colors in contrast of Jimmy Neutrons bland and unappealing colors. The character designs here, though, are rather bland like Jimmy Neutron's character designs. Some designs look too simple, which looks pretty generic too. I did like both theme songs of the show because it's like Jimmy Neutron's awesome theme song, but with more energy in both theme songs. BUT THE WHIP CRACK, yep the overly used and annoying whip crack is possibly worse than the repetition of the show. A whip crack counter video shows that there's an average amount of 190 whip cracks used in every episode. Seriously, the sound effect blends awfully into every move the characters make. For example, when a character waves his/her arms, this dang sound effect plays. Whoever thought of putting an obnoxious sound into a show that's like a laugh track should know what he/she's doing before adding this thing into the show. While the animation is solid and the theme songs are great, the whip crack can annoy everyone while watching this cartoon.
Feels like this shows becoming a mixed bag? Wait 'till we see the characters:
The characters are nearly as the same levels of Jimmy Neutron's poor characters, except barely any of them are enjoyable. Like Jimmy Neutron, the characters are rather generic and bland as well. I did like how we know some stuff about the one-timers, but what about the protagonists? I don't even know if I can call them flat characters or not because Johnny Test have some sides like being heroic or incredibly stereotypical or we don't know anything about Johnny Tests life. However, the characterization, compared to the last 2 shows, is better because there's real character development and occasionally, I can relate to some of the characters. But that's not all about that, because Dark Vegan is a very obvious rip off of Dark Laser from The Fairly OddParents, but at least we know a lot about him, including his daughter, Jillian Vegan. While I do find the execution of the characters better, they're still generic and forgettable.
You see those who hate Johnny Test, this show isn't bad, but close to being good. This show is better than The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Dexter's Laboratory, thanks to the episodes being more interesting, the animation becoming more vibrant, and the characters getting better development, but this show is nevertheless a mixed bag with too much repetition and that obnoxious whip crack. So yeah, from what you seen from my review, this show is just decent (or alright) (68%). Like Harvey Beaks, this show is nothing special. It's just something I'd expect from the generic junkpile of Canadian cartoons.
Also, the hate art is getting irritating. Seriously, who would dedicate their life on hating Johnny Test, even if that show ended already and the time you were born, this cartoon didn't air yet.

Have you tried zooming in? If you did and still couldn't comprehend, then I suggest you use an episode guide.

Actually, Chris Savino was a supervising producer of THE FIRST SEASON. Dark Vegan is a ripoff of Darth Vader, by the way. The writers sure love ripping stuff off. I agree with you 100% with the whip cracks.
EPISODES I AGREE WITH YOU 100% ON:
Johnny and the Attack of the Monster Truck
Johnny vs. Bling Bling 2
Johnny Mint Chip
Johnny X 3
Johnny of the Jungle
Johnny vs. Smash Badger 3
Johnny'Mon (Blast Ketchup is voiced by Kevin from Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy in that episode and it's sequel)
Johnny Escape from Bling Bling Island
Johnny's New Baby Sisters (Susan and Mary began to run out of ideas on how to get Gil)
Dark Johnny
Johnny Irresistible (Johnny abuses his sisters' inventions as usual)
My Dinner with Johnny
The Last Flight of Johnny X (That was a tolerable one)
I could only explain a few episodes.

the first season was a fine success, but when it ended up on cartoon network, I regret seeing it there. it wasn't bad for the first.
