Description
For the next one, it's a pretty obscure cartoon that a few of you probably never heard of. Sure, I brought up shows like Gunbuster and Here Comes the Grump , but what about this one that's more known than said two? Well, expect more of these soon, 'cause I picked this show because... HISTORY
Okay, so I may not have one trace of an experience with Robotboy (considering I was only a baby at the time), but I included this section to explain why I wanted to review such an obscure cartoon. Anyways, at first I had no interest in reviewing Robotboy, but because that I was trying to find a show I thought I would dislike judging from my first thoughts, I chose this cartoon not only 'cause of that, but also due to Debbie Turnbull when I heard about the internet's reaction to her "thiccness". Specifically, I wanted to watch Robotboy to test my harshness on it, making sure that almost every episode I watch have a reasonable and honest rating I can look back and exactly see why I liked/disliked it.
It took me approximately 5 weeks to make this scorecard because I wanted to take my time watching the series and making the scorecard so that I can do other stuff I'd like to do online. I started production on my Robotboy scorecard at the same time when I started the complete Tangled: the Series scorecard because I couldn't resist waiting to watch this show after I catched up with Craig of the Creek . Starting this scorecard, I continued to finish scorecards at least 1 month ahead of its DeviantArt release (with a few exceptions if the show's brand new at the time of the scorecard's release).
Similar to my experience while reviewing CatDog , I had trouble deciding which season is which; Are there 2 seasons or 4? In the end, I chose 4 seasons for this one because I looked up the release dates for these episodes and noticed that every 26 segments were released in separate years, rather than deciding how many sources agreed on what.
PIE CHART ANALYSIS
This is mostly what you expect from a mediocre cartoon. The BAD ratings take up merely a half of the pie chart, with one episode being damned, specifically a notorious. For the mixed bags, there's overall 16 of them with the first time in Season 3 being the mixed bag rating taking up all of the middlings contained in this show. Because that I think I achieved honesty really well in this scorecard, we have 11 episodes I recommend, rather than there being no goods, but instead 5 of them are GOOD. There were enough recommendable episodes that it formed a top 10 on this scorecard. Heck, the best episode of the series is great rather than a stinkin' meh that seem unreasonable if it were in the 2nd season. If I were to compare the pie chart to other cartoons' pie charts, the closest would be to Fanboy and Chum Chum 's pie chart where there is an episode I really liked along with the only damned rating being notorious.
FIRST THOUGHTS
Looking at the reception of Robotboy, I too think that the show's about to be bad, and we have the premise here that's an example of my negative first thoughts regarding this cartoon:
Robotboy is the latest creation of the world-renowned scientist Professor Moshimo. Due to fears that Robotboy would be stolen by his arch-enemy Dr. Kamikazi and his main henchman Constantine to be used to take over the world, Professor Moshimo entrusts Robotboy to 10-year-old Tommy Turnbull, his biggest fan living in San Francisco. While being protected by Tommy and his two friends Lola and Gus, Robotboy learns how to behave and act as if he were a real boy while occasionally battling Dr. Kamikazi and Constantine who sought out to capture him.
-Sourced from Wikipedia
So it's not exactly the worst premise I've seen, but I can tell that the show has little potential. What exemplifies the small potential of Robotboy is the "become a real boy" aspect of it that makes it look clichéd, bland, and similar to My Life as a Teenage Robot where both shows involve some normal day activities with a grasp of superhero action. Another clichéd aspect of the premise would be the "take over the world" aspect that Dr. Kamikazi's goal was planned to be. Even with those bad aspects in the way, it still does some things fresh and interesting like a fan given his idol's creation to take care of. So not everything from the premise is bad, but rather a shallow one.
WRITING
Looks like the broken writing is expected to appear in Robotboy. For the most part, it's a bland mess that there is barely anything interesting about it.
One thing that this show mostly can't get right is the setups, where they're either omitted for time (which causes episodes to have bad explanation and plot holes) or plain contrived. For the latter, Gus would usually be responsible for the lower rankings a few episodes get by transmitting plenty of dumb and cruel actions that are meant to be funny, but instead makes the episode more unbearable to watch because of his motives. And then there's the former, which I already pointed out that it's often unexplained with missing scenes that causes the episode to create plot holes on its way.
Another thing that Robotboy can't keep stable is, you guessed it, the episode premises, where they often appear bland and pretty clichéd that only makes the episode predictable from top to bottom. What causes the predictability anyways? It's of course the clichés, but also from how the characters behave such as Gus whenever they do something stupid.
Another case for the predictability is the constant rehashing. I'll admit it, in the 1st season the concept of a few episodes felt clever with an okay structure that deceives me into thinking "were they actually doing that in the first place?". That all went smooth until the show continues to reuse the concept throughout the entire series and it's all ruined thanks to the rehashing. The most overused plots I can think of is when Dr. Kamikazi and Constantine use something to lure Tommy or his friends into bringing Robotboy over and said villains disguising in order to get Robotboy. Wait a minute, these 2 plots are the same thing! Also, Robotboy getting kidnapped by Dr. Kamikazi and Constantine is not only a repetitive aspect of the writing, but also more of a plot device that doesn't really do that much considering that said villains don't tamper Robotboy that much after they captured him. But even with lots of rehashing, does the newer episodes remain clever as the first time that type of plot was used? Well, thanks to the blandness of the series, they mostly come out as dull and the locations for these plots aren't really impressive considering that there are other episodes of other shows that did it better.
What about the focus? Rather all over the place if you asked me because there would be one subplot that could've contributed to the conflict of the episode, but they mostly come out as irrelevant. Also, Dr. Kamikazi and Constantine would also invade the episode in the middle of the episode right when a conflict is already happening so that the episode can have 2 conflicts going on at once, but luckily, it got the job done by solving both conflicts at the end so the latter's not really a big deal.
Then we have the fight scenes, which I feel like where straightfoward and rushed because Robotboy would transform at the right moment when the protagonists are in danger and after that, the episode would hurry along the comeback for up to 1 minute with barely any plot twists up to the villains' defeat. I'll give credit to the them because sometimes, they can feel a little creative depending on the setting there characters are in, but it's not that in all episodes, however.
What happened in Seasons 3-4 got the show picked up a little. The potential got better and the good foreshadowing that existed when the series first premiered could've risen up the show's quality, but the pacing later on got slower.
Verdict: The writing barely stands out due to it being just bland and predictable with lots of rehashing on its way.
HUMOR
This must be the first time I talk about the humor in a different section, eh? But onto with the topic, the humor is bound the make the episode worse.
A majority of the jokes Robotboy contain can be explained using one word; gross. There's just way too many gags about being naked, random farting from Gus that makes him more repugnant to sit to, and amounts of burping that makes the episodes bleh! Another gross joke that also became a running gag throughout the series is "Belly-Man" that Gus would usually play around with. What's even more disgusting about that snippet is that Gus' nipples are the eyes, which would form a face on his torso with a dot as a nose with the outlines of his fat belly being the mouth. Really? That's not even something creative that I would laugh at. The worst thing you could possibly imagine from the gross humor is that Season 4 only made it worse with its biggest impact being on an episode called "Donnie Turnbull's Day Off" where it was pulled to its extent that it made the whole episode disturbing. In fact, the gross humor created plenty of disturbing scenes in Robotboy.
But what about the jokes that aren't disgusting related? Bland and flat. Gus being the butt of people's jokes gets pretty old the next second considering that yes, he's treated like a comic relief, but there are other characters that people can make fun of, like Dr. Kamikazi whose slapstick is actually funny because it's not spammed throughout the series. What involves him is whenever small animals such as lobsters and spiders would mess around with Kamikazi's face or fingers. And that makes room for another good aspect for the humor, it can be unexpected. Unfortunately, that applies for a few jokes in Robotboy because they can get repetitive like Gus being the butt-monkey, even though that joke has some variety.
The plenty of running gags from this cartoon were unfunny when they first appeared, and they continued to be clichéd and flat that even made me irritated at one point. Those include people thinking Gus and Lola are a couple and more lame is where animals get annoyed by human habits.
Verdict: It may have some charm with being unpredictable at times, but it's just gross that got even worse later on. The bland slapstick and unfunny running gags doesn't help the humor either.
QUALITY
Looking at Robotboy's animation style, it doesn't really seem that bad compared to the other 3 aspects. Why don't we start with the positive aspects?
This show may not achieve all of its aspects very well, but what does pay off in the animation department are the color schemes since they at least look neat. San Francisco seems to be given a warm hue that fits the daytime setting the series is set in, the nighttime settings uses a unique shade of blue (which is around peacock blue) and Kamikazi's lair has a red color scheme from the interior that captures the feeling that they're inside a volcano. Not only that, but it's also fascinating that his lair doesn't look like an ordinary volcano, but rather a cool addition where a crooked and more menacing face is carved into the volcano.
One thing that surprised me about the quality is that the computer animation was used to its advantage where it perfectly blends with the animation style. Well, that sort of makes sense considering that the backgrounds are 2D where it looks easy to animate camera angles on a computer without adding strokes to the model. That seems like a smart move to not include strokes to CGi models.
But sadly, that's where the good aspects end. To me, the quality just isn't that appealing to me other than the color schemes and computer animation because I thought it looks typical for the 2000's. It has plenty of aspects that made a 2000's cartoon like abstract character designs, 2D backgrounds, the down-to-earth color scheme and dozens of minimalist details within the backgrounds and characters. But is it me, or does Tommy Turnbull look similar to Mac from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends with the rounded square shape of their heads?
Typical animation isn't no biggie, is that correct? It's not typical animation that's a problem regarding the animation, there's more aspects that makes the quality worse that it can't save Robotboy from mediocrity. First off, the animation's very choppy. The mouth movements of the characters seem to be slow and lacking in frames that at times, it looks like the mouth doesn't sync with the dialogue. Also, whenever the characters sometimes walk is another case of the choppiness in the animation.
And what about the voice acting? I can go on about them; It sounds pretty bad. There's some voices like Constantine's that annoy me due to how his voice sounds a bit girly, and let's not forget about the side characters; There's Princess Justine's voice (who only appeared in one episode but I like to bring it up) who sounds a bit incomprehensible due to her voice sounding muffled, and we have Kurt's voice who sounds really off because of how calm he sounds rather than tough. Those are some of the bad voices from a select number of characters, but the acting? Not so much effort put into them at times like when the dialogue sounds sarcastic, whether if them yelling or crying in panic. It sounds like they're more bored than scared.
However, I'll give credit to the voice acting that the accents are decent and captures the foreign ethnicity of Professor Moshimo, Robotboy, Dr. Kamikazi, Klaus Von Affenkugel, etc.
Finally, there's the background music, where in the first 2 seasons it's really repetitive, especially Dr. Kamikazi's theme. Luckily, Seasons 3-4 gave the show better production music variety thanks to the introduction of more villains. But still, Kamikazi's theme continues to be overused throughout the series and Klaus Von Affenkugel's theme is simply a shortened version of Symphony No. 5 by Beethoven.
Verdict: Despite it having little charm with the color schemes, it's that type of quality that didn't impress me that much. The choppy animation and bad voice acting made it worse.
CHARACTERS
Most of these characters are rather generic that could get annoying at times. They are yet another aspect who are bound the make the show worse thanks to their antics.
Let's start with the protagonists, shall we? Robotboy, the title character, is rather a typical robot, containing the normal abilities robots have like activation/deactivation and weapons. He is also rather clichéd where he tries to adapt to human life and whenever he is kept to be secret from public to avoid being exposed. A good thing about Robotboy is that his portrayal is solid with his gullible-ness making sense and to make him more distinct, his lexicon where he has a limited choice of words compared to humans where usually he doesn't use pronouns. However, his gullible-ness can be hard to take seriously and rather just plain stupid whenever he unknowingly give the villains he know advantage. Plus, there's a few times where him complaining about Tommy promising can get pretty annoying fast.
For the humans, we first have Tommy Turnbull. He's just a flat character with not many character traits. I can say he does care for Robotboy often, but it's not really saying much because his worrysome for him is also annoying that makes him look over protective of him in the beginning. One aspect I don't get from Tommy is that he continues to fall in love with Bambi, the love interest, despite her being a jerk to him. Also, Bambi can sometimes be supportive to Tommy despite being a jerk to him in the first place!
Gus, ah Gus. We all understand why he's such an abhorrent character. Like the voice acting, I can go on about Gus and how much he is a horrible friend to Tommy and Lola. There aren't really a lot of redeemable aspects from him. He can be considered a traitor to them because he is constantly egotistical and arrogant on others including Tommy and Lola whenever he wins. His jokes are disgusting, like I said in the humor section, that aren't anything creative and exaggerated for me to like. More examples of his betrayals to his friends is when he's really irresponsible of looking out for Robotboy and could easily lose him to Dr. Kamikazi. Not only that, but he's so distracted and responsible for the bad setups for a need of sugary sweets that causes the plot to malfunction all thanks to him.
And the last friend of the trio, Lola, who I feel like doesn't have that much of a purpose in the show due to not having as much appearances as Tommy or Gus. Is she at least interesting? Eh, rather forgettable at best. The only moment I can remember from her is that she has an awkward crush on Tommy that sometimes made me flinch.
Those were the protagonists, and what about the ANtagonists? Same thing goes for the protagonists too. They don't appeal to me that much. Dr. Kamikazi is a bland and clichéd villain bent on world domination. That's such a generic goal for villains now-a-days. Plus, he can be an idiot whenever he doesn't listen to his sidekick, Constantine, trying to grant good news to him, but he doesn't care because he thinks Constantine is useless. That shows that his manipulation of Constantine makes no sense here.
There wasn't that many variety in the antagonists in Seasons 1-2, but luckily there's more in 3-4. There's Klaus Von Affenkugel, who has a much better goal than Kamikazi where he's trying to get Robotboy's parts in order to be strong. He's actually a fairly interesting character, despite most of his backstories being the same thing and tackling the fact that of course, he's weak. Oh, and he is also manipulative just like Kamikazi where he doesn't need Ludwig after he gained Robotboy's parts.
And we have Felonious Hexx, who just like Affenkugel, is a decent villain with interesting powers (specifically magic). What about his backstory? The time where he becomes a dentist all because of Gus doesn't make a lot of sense. Why should he proceed to be a dentist? He should've continued to be a magician and forget Gus.
How about Tommy's family? I have plenty of notes to discuss regarding them. First off, Donnie Turnbull is just Terrence from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends where he is the bully brother of our main character. And we have his parents, Debbie and Dwight Turnbull. The former cares about Tommy the most, but the latter is mostly an unpleasant and overwhelming dad who would overwork Tommy and Donnie into more exercise with no rest. The parents' gullible actions just makes them even more stupider rather than funny, where at one point they hear a loud crash, but ignores it.
Verdict: So it looks like this section is mostly about the characters, but I can't find that much about what they have in common other than being mostly bland and annoying at times. I guess that sums up most of them.
FINAL THOUGHTS
It's sort of like Catscratch where I think the show deserved to be forgotten. The constant gross humor existed before it was infamous in the 2010's when Nickelodeon was trying to be cool and hip. But in all seriousness:
For a cartoon I dislike, there are plenty of things I can give credit to this series for; it can occasionally be clever, involve some decent slapstick, nice color schemes and hues and okay portrayal of the characters. However, what I cannot excuse is that this show is indeed forgettable with bland and predictable writing, backing it up with gross humor that would later on get worse within each season, unappealing 2000’s animation mixed with the awfully-off voice acting and the dull cast, who easily gets annoying and sometimes become idiots.
In all, this is a cartoon I struggled to be honest with it and I did find plenty of good aspects regarding this show, despite most of it being flawed. It has some enough good aspects to pull the series up to POOR (37%) all thanks to what I said in the summary thought bubble.Epilogue: It's about time. I'm glad it's the first time I saw that rating as a final rating for a show out of the mediocre ones. I keep getting weaks and inadequates that they somehow bug me. I even thought Ben 10 (2005) would receive that rating due to it having a few redeemable aspects to it, but finally, there's a poor. Now will there be more foreign and obscure cartoons heading your way? Not sure about that, but you all can wait for the future, because this season's all about variety and I can go further back into finding more.

This is, in my opinion, your best looking scorecard. You are getting better, good on that.
Yeah....I can see a show looking like this have mild grossout humor, it looks like that kind of show.

My thoughts on RobotBoy? I think it's a pretty good show. Sure episodes had plots that were done better by other shows and there are traces of dodginess but I still think it's decent. I like the character designs, and yeah, I do agree some episodes can get pretty bad. I KNEW to avoid Cleaning Day just from the EPG synopsis alone! (at least Super 4 did a good job of an episode with that same title!) As much as I do still like RobotBoy regardless of its flaws, I thought the show's title was too similar to Astro Boy from the get-go, and I like your comparison to My Life As A Teenage Robot, but to my knowledge, MLAATR did not air here in the UK, it's not even available to buy on UK iTunes! (I do plan to import the US DVDs of that show someday and get something I can watch those on)
Alphanium, later renamed Gaumont, have done other good shows in years since, such as Galactik Football, F is For Family and Furiki Wheels.
