IF Randall was anywhere near as bad and "mean" as the kiddie books make him out to be, he would have had to be utterly psychotic from the get-go, hence he never would have gotten hired for a high-risk job like Scaring, since those positions require streneous psychological/mental evaluations to be passed before they'll will even consider you, not to mention intensive criminal background checks. I mean, if any of us got the chance to actually ask one of the "higher-ups" at Pixar if THEY would hire, or keep in employment, someone who had no redeeming qualities whatsoever, what do you suppose THEY would say? I doubt that MI would have been any different. It's another case of "he's scaly and snakey and reptilian, so he HAS to be mean because reptiles are so bad!"

Stupid kid probably cheated off some other kid's homework, anyway.

I don't think Randall is the evil-incarnate Pixar made him out to be, either.

I would more describe him as crabby and selfish
(btw, I've often been described that way).
But he also has some good qualities: he's ambitious and VERY smart.

People (and monsters) are more complex than simply being "bad" and "mean".

Yes, we are indeed. I would describe MYSELF as selfish at times, and anyone who won't admit to having selfish moments is lying. Crabby? Absolutely, and I tend to get worse as I get old; I find myself becoming a female version of Carl Frederickson, lol! BUT, with Randall, I don't think his "crabbiness" was default, either it wasn't, or he could do a really good job at bottling it in at work when he was first hired. Given what he had to be going through with the designing and building of the Scream Extractor, how his boss was treating him, and how he was still working his butt off at his regular job, only to get nowhere due to some behind-the-scenes numbers-rigging, his attitude was totally understandable. Few people could have held on as long as he did without "snapping" and having a breakdown. Before he got involved with the machine, Randall might have been a bit of a loner, possibly not by choice, but most likely was pretty easy to get along with. No company in this world or any other is going to put up with someone who can't get along with co-workers, and given Randall's physical differences from all the others, that alone probably would have automatically made others quick to complain if he so much as breathed the wrong way around them.

I'm just wondering...
Have you ever taken a Monsters Inc personality test?

Most of them ask really stupid questions like "how many eyes do you have?"
but this one is pretty good [link]

Tell me what your result is, okay?

I came out as Randall

I got Randall, too, although I disagree with the quiz's assessment of him being "mean, sneaky and not giving a hoot about anyone but himself". What is so bad about wanting to double the success of your company? I'm working on that, too-along with the other teachers at our school. WHY is that a bad thing? HOW is it "selfish" to want your business/school to succeed? Like I said, Randall could NOT have been "mean" or any other negative thing to start with or he never would have been hired in the first place; something happened to MAKE him that way after he got hired. So, he wanted to be successful-WHY work at all if you don't? There is NOTHING in the movie to indicate that he wanted to take over the company, only to advance on the corporate "ladder", which is the goal of most workers, actually-to improve your situation. Only an idiot would be happy with second best. Second place is, in the words of the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr., "the first loser". Randall also clearly believed, as stated to Mike, that his efforts would not only pay off for him and the company, but would "revolutionize the Scaring industry", making life easier and energy cheaper for all monsters. Selfish? I don't think so.

I agree with you that Randalls "evil plot", as fungus said, was far from evil. It would have solved a world-wide energy crisis! Yes... it used human children as guinea pigs, but don't humans do that with lab rats? Humans were, after all, viewed as animals in the monster world. I don't understand why the CDA were after Randall and Mr. Waternoose

pitbulllady In reply to Invader-Sam-93 [2010-12-20 14:07:38 +0000 UTC]

The CDA was involved due to the false belief that human children were toxic and posed a huge threat to monster safety. It's not unlike the equally false belief in our country, among politicians and government bureaucrats, that large snakes pose an enormous risk to human safety and the environment throughout the entire country, hence the push to ban them. It's a belief founded on fear, the REAL intent of which is to give the government greater control over the people. Same with the CDA. They were perpetrating a false belief in order to keep the fear alive and thus validate their existance.

Most people who watch the movie see Randall as though he were expected to view human children and treat human children as WE do, as HUMANS do, forgetting that he was NOT human, but part of a culture that sees us as dangerous animals, not equals to monsters at all. Most people are unable to make the analogy between Randall's using Boo to test out a piece of new technology and humans using monkeys or chimps in our space program to do exactly the same thing.
