Was going to add ghost, but wasn't Casper once a human child?

Never watched the cartoon, WAY before my time. But I did see the movie and got the impression he was a Victorian era child who died of pneumonia.

The original cartoon (which was before my time too, haha!) had pretty much zero background story, it was far too simplistic, so I go with the movie back-story, which is exactly as you say!

Most cartoons from that era did appear to lack a plot.

I've heard that said about certain animaes too.

You know, I haven't watched any really old anime, but I would guess if I pulled up an original Astro Boy episode, it would probably be pretty simple!

I'm referring to more modern animaes, such as Serial Experiment Lain.

Hmm, not familiar with that one, but I'll take you're word for it!

It's a late 1990's animae about a shy girl named Lain who gets an e-mail from a classmate who committed suicide. All the girls in Lain's class get an e-mail from her and everyone just assumes it's a sick joke. But in the email, the girl tells Lain that she isn't truly dead, she's just abandoned her body and flesh but she is alive and well in the internet and has found God there. Lain gets curious and starts to explore the internet (or "the wired" as they call it in the show), and is able to aparently literally transport herselfΒ get in there. She undergoes personality mental illness and others say it'sy changes and eventually deletes herself from everyone'sΒ memory.Β

Angel's Egg might be one of those "plotless" animaes because there is not much dialogue and most of the story is told visually.

Hmm, well that sounds more complicated that 'ghost tires to make friend - ghost fail or succeeds - repeat' - haha!

A lot of kid's shows did seem to repeat themselves, or had a formula unique to the show that would repeat.

Invader-Sam In reply to RensMeerkat [2015-05-13 21:59:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there was a lot of formula-type storytelling, which can get old.

Which is why people say the new MLP cartoon is so ingenious for a "kid's" show. The older MLP cartoons were really nothing more than thirty minute toy commercials.

A lot of the 80s cartoons were like that - the toys came first then the shows: Transformers, TMNT, a whole slew of others I can't think of right now, lol.

Pound Puppies marketing strategy was kind of manipulative; as the Nostalgic Critic says, "That's right kids! Adopt one of our poor sad little puppies or they get the gas!"Β  Care Bears were originally greeting card characters. Β
