Oh. My. GOSH, finally, after almost three years, I have a somewhat decent reference sheet for the erebus!

The one I had before was janky as hell, lookat it:

So, the erebus!

The erebus is a masked creature known to hunt humans. They can change the colouring of their coats (more experienced erebus can change their body shape), to lure curious humans, mostly children. They mostly lurk on the edges of towns and villages, waiting for a chance to get a child's attention. They will lure the human deep into the forest before quickly killing them. The erebus steals the human's soul, storing it inside their throat.
The erebus will eventually deposit their collection of souls into the hollow of a tree, where it will be transported over to "The Pale Between", which is like a purgatory.

Erebus are created from two human souls sewn together in such a way that the good parts of the soul is hidden away, only leaving room for the bad to show itself.

An erebus mask is created from reconstituted human bone. This mask is also their greatest weakness. Erebus can only feel pain on an around their mask. If an erebus has its mask destroyed or pulled off, it will die. An erebus mask is like a lid, keeping the two souls that keep it alive inside.

After several hundred years, an erebus soul will begin to fall apart, the threads weakening and tearing. This will create two erstewhile (sub-species). Erstewhile are creatures will fully human souls. They look somewhat like erebus, but they have very human qualities.

If an erebus manages to not fall apart when its souls try to separate, it will become a dusk erebus. Dusk erebus are usually of darker colours (as they come out at night, and prefer to be unseen). Their masks are inverted in colour. Dusk erebus are usually extremely hostile, blinded by raw negative human emotion and pain, they can barely think. They are known to attack any living creature, including other erebus.

However some dusk erebus are in fact very calm, an may behave more like erstewhile. This happens when an erebus is 'good' before it becomes a dusk erebus.

GOOD EREBUS:

An erebus can become good via two ways:
-If it is taken away from its mother at a young age
-If it sees its own reflection at a young age

A good erebus is able to access the good parts of its soul, they can feel compassion and emotion. Erebus like this will also not ever split into two erstewhile, as their souls are not struggling to pull apart from one another. Good erebus will still eventually turn into a dusk erebus, but they will not be suffering.

This type of dusk erebus is sometimes referred to as a dawn erebus. They often have paler colouring than normal dusk erebus.
