Description
Resulting Map, Full SizeSo, I spent most of my evenings after work on a map for Age of Avarice. I've made many maps in the past, but never documented my process, and I felt that had to be remedied... Mostly because I tend to forget the process myself. Figuring it out again each time definitely results in new discoveries and more experimentation, but it would be nice to have something to refer back to.
This is the first half of the tutorial, the full thing with full, high-resolution images (most of the ones here are cropped) can be found on my blog: Irshad's Fantasy Cartography Tutorial .
The base technique I've been using for the past seven years, I learned from one of jezelf's tutorials . His method for generating land formations is simple, but brilliant. Definitely take a look at the rest of his tutorials he's posted there. They take a very different direction from mine, and result in more realistic topographical representations.

If I remember correctly, it's called "Ale & Wenches". Free font, shouldn't be hard to find.

Awesome tutorial, and one I will definitely use in the construction of my game's map (as soon as I got the basic demo of my side project out of the way that is)! I took a quick look at jezelf's as well and I can see why you hold him/her in high regard
