Description This dude, Needed some help on his 3d model so i figured HEY! this is a good chance to make a tutorial!

(i apologize in advance for typos and spelling errors XD)

Modeling anime faces can be confusing even if you've modeled a human face before. Conventional methods like working form a square simply might not work. My method is more free form, and permits awkward forms easily, at least to me anyway.

This tutorial doesn't explain what the topology rules 'are' just my process for modeling them on an anime character. The source material comes from an awesome tutorial Phung Dinh Dzung. I suggest you read that tutorial before doing this tutorial.

[link]

This Is meant for people somewhat already familiar with blender, explaining everything might make this far too long. Not only that i avoid some details because everyones drawings are different you'll need to be creative in modeling them.

Also i'm sorry its a bit dull, i'm not quite used to GIMP. I'm a Photoshop person normally.

If my process seems familiar then it might be because i used to be very into spline modeling with animation master. That's basically where this modeling process comes from. So if you've ever seen or used that you'll be right at home.

It would be great if You could add some sort of "How do I start outline it" orrr "How did I." , there's everything ok after that (Didnt test that out yet, but Im pretty sure its ok) . Because of it. I find this tutorial not friendly. But...It's cool.

You mean outlining with the vertices? That's a simple process. Yeah i didn't explain specific buttons and such cause i think intended this to be used for people who had already tried modeling in blender a decent amount and know some basic inputs like extrude, fill and merge.

If you're having difficulties, i'd suggest doing some video modeling tutorials on YouTube first. If you need more specific advice feel free to ask though.

can you also do the same concept using 3dsmax? or is it an entirely different procedure?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IsiacDaGraca In reply to msaishakristine [2014-02-10 21:43:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes you can, the menu interface is different so i'm not exactly certain of the process, haven't used 3dsmax in a while.

But over all yeah the concepts provided here should apply 3dsmax no problem.

^i found this youtube video that talks about a very similar process to mine but for 3ds max.

Great tutorial! I'm willing to try it as soon has i get the references done.

But i'm having trouble finding the 'import image as plane' plugin, could you lend me some help?

go to file -> user preferences -> then add-ons, you can enable the plugin there. finding it will be under import.

Bahhhh, such a great tutorial although I'm still new to blender so I just don't know how to do anything I'm looking at.

Any suggestions for tutorials just to get me started on learning the techniques needed to complete this amazing tutorial? Thanks in advance.

^tht video series seems really really good for learning the basics of blender.

The main things used in this tutorial are the plugins "import image to plane" for the reference, a modifier called "mirror", and keyboard shortcuts which are necessary for modeling.

the most important short cuts being extrude ("E"), fill ("F"), merge ("Alt+M")and the transform shortcuts ("G,S, and R").

that, a good reference image, and the basics are all you need to get started.

if you have any further questions feel free to ask.

Whoa,thank you so much.

I signed up for deviantart because of this post and so far it's
a ton better than all of those other crappy websites where the
users take up to 4 months to reply.

Thanks again by the way and if it's not a problem I'll come back
any time I need some more help for a simpleton like me ^_^

heh its cool dude, i like helping people

look forward to seeing your work!

also if you like good art communities, i hang around this google+ community alot [link]

the people there are actually part of what inspired me to get drawing daily. I'm sure they'll motivate you too

I also get on google hangouts with the group from time to time and screenshare when i'm working, so if you need help you might find me there.

Hah, I just can't thank you enough for introducing me to this whole different world.

I'll take a bit more of a look into that art community. I love drawing it's just I never really feel compelled to draw and I just end up drawing either in class or rarely at home.

Hopefully I'll start uploading soon. Blender things of course since I can't really draw (come to think of it I need to find some nice drawing tutorials o__o) though thanks again, hopefully get in touch with you sometime soon.

ketsui-chan [2012-08-07 08:54:33 +0000 UTC]

T_T The mirror modifier won't work for me. And how do you get reference pictures if you're doing a different character? I tried drawing them myself, but... Well... Let's just say I can draw front view, but profile view... No. Just no.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IsiacDaGraca In reply to ketsui-chan [2012-08-09 20:13:07 +0000 UTC]

In that case you might need to improve your profile drawing a bit. Front and side views don't need to perfectly match but there must be some consistency.

check out this tutorial... [link] or [link]

there's tons of others, but the baisic idea is the same.

Once you have that, scan you images in (if it's on paper) line them up to be the same size, and similar position in some photo editing program. then use the "import image" plugin in blender. Here's a tutorial for that... [link]

As for the mirror modifyer, its good to have some of the model in place before activating that but here's a good tutorial for that too.

hope this helps.

there is a plugin in blender called import image to plane, this method is best imo.

there also used to be a way to actually add images to the background of a certain view but i don't know how to do it.

That's one thing I hate about 3D: Deciding whether to fix it, or to scrap the whole thing and do a new one XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IsiacDaGraca In reply to momokuchi [2011-09-10 18:25:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah scraping is a hard choice, i normally make my decision on two things.

How long it took me to make it

and how long it will take me to fix it.

Heads like these and even the female figure don't take too long to model. the head should be about 30 minutes (this entire tutorial took only 30 minutes for me) and a full figure should take 3 hours at most(especially if its not very detailed).

I'f i've been working on the base of a head (no eyes or any detail) and its taken me an hour on that alone then i must be making things too complicated and should try a better approach. If i made the head in 30 minutes, yet it looks wrong and also looks like it would take me hours (or an hour) to fix it then i obviously made things too complicated. as for a full figure sometimes you don't need to start over entirely just salvage whats good and start over on the rest (unless its ALL bad).

In the early initial stages of your model things should be simple and fairly quick, and more than likely your model won't be in perfect form at the beginning so you'll HAVE to fix it. if at anytime it seems like things are taking too long, stop and start over.

momokuchi In reply to IsiacDaGraca [2011-09-10 18:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Thx for the feedback! I guess I'll have to practise some more to become faster. Although I have to admit I haven't modeled that much yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IsiacDaGraca In reply to momokuchi [2011-09-10 19:55:43 +0000 UTC]

well just know that when it comes to modeling (atleast for me anyway) simple and fast is better than slow and complicated.

some new people model with dense models (tons of points to edit), a bunch of squares with no flow to them, or tons of triangles.

in what ever you model in the future, start out by keeping it simple and work from there using no more than you need too.

wish you luck

thanks! Your hints are really helpful! I'll keep those in mind!

I guess I'll try modeling a phew heads in 30min sessions, just for fun. Usually I only start up my 3d engines when there'sa big project to do

Perhaps you could also cover the hair in part 2 as well, please?
I've been trying it myself but no technique I can find does it right. I don't want it to be like realistic hair, I want that thick hair made from a cube or something, but with bones so it can move slightly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IsiacDaGraca In reply to TheRamosOnline [2011-09-02 00:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Hm, chunk hair has a good deal of steps beyond modeling like texturing and such.

Using particle hair can easily generate a higher quality look, i'll explore both.

not sure if it will be in part 2, but i will do a tutorial on that.

TheRamosOnline In reply to IsiacDaGraca [2011-09-02 00:32:26 +0000 UTC]

Hm... Well can Particle hair still produce cartoony hair? I thought chunk hair would keep the Anime style and be easier in the long run to manage...

i might choose to create that over part 2 tonight...we'll see.

one step at a time

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

IsiacDaGraca In reply to TheRamosOnline [2011-09-02 00:40:02 +0000 UTC]

yes it can actually, quite easily too.

And with the method i use its extremely easy to manage.

modeled hair can be managed well but not as easily depending on how you handle it.

I'll explore the options when i get to it.
