I know what you mean, before I made this I've always been looking for an easy way to make cutouts and PNG's. I had found a similar way online, so I decided to go off of that and make a more in-depth tutorial on it. I hope you find this tutorial helpful, and if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them. ^_^

I think this is a great technique, but do you know how to extract fine hair?

This technique usually extracts most fine hair. If not, it may just delete the small, unnoticeable pieces.

Interesting tutorial. Three things though.
One, I've occasionally run into problems dodging/burning too much, and ending up with sharp pixelated edges, cutting out a picture that had very little contrast between the foreground & background.
Two, I believe the Background Eraser in Photoshop CS5 is somewhat easier. At this point. Personally, I use the BG Eraser to cut out an image, copy the transparency to a new channel and THEN dodge/burn it to suite my needs.
Three, creating a separate selection for the shadow & filling it with solid black (with partial transparency) makes it easier to blend with the background.
That's all.

Thanks for sharing your technique, I'll have to try it out sometime. I have used the BG eraser before but it always tended to miss a lot of the background? Haha I don't know why, but I'll have to try it again you what happens.
Anyway, I'm glad you like my tutorial.

The key to BG Eraser lies in clicking. A lot. When you click on an area, BGE considers that color to be the one you want to erase. So if you click on one part of the image, and drag your eraser all around, you'll get bad results. If you click & erase away bit by bit, it'll be tedious, but you get good results.

I see, I see...I tried it on a really small image today. It seemed to work fairly well, I'll have to try and out when I'm actually cutting out something I'm going to use. Thanks again for the tip, I appreciate it!

This seems like a really complicated way to do a simple task

For me, this was the uncomplicated way which is why I decided to teach it this way. The other methods of cutting out an image in my opinion are a lot more difficult and inaccurate.

couldn't you do magic wand tool -> delete -> done though?

IttyBittyVic In reply to voltism [2011-07-07 03:49:55 +0000 UTC]
Magic Wand Tool doesn't get around small areas or hair strands very well, but yes...that is one way to attempt a cut out.

I only like using the Pen Tool for cutting out big objects that aren't too detailed.

I have learned the same method though via Brush tool and not Burn: that was interesting, with the Burn things should be easier.
Anyway, why don't just drag the image in PS instead of "open -> find folder -> click"?

IttyBittyVic In reply to Prue84 [2011-06-30 00:02:38 +0000 UTC]
Some people don't know how to drag items (and sometimes with certain computers, dragging doesn't even work), so I just decided to teach the natural way.

I didn't know on some computers the thing doesn't work: it just so natural for me, and I'm on Windows 2000 so I have no "new" computer. ^^

Thank you for your hard work!

Very interesting. Why would you suggest this method over selecting with the lasso tool?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
IttyBittyVic In reply to banachana [2011-06-29 19:15:59 +0000 UTC]
I don't think (in my opinion, anyway) that any of the Lasso Tools PS comes with are very accurate, especially when it comes to cutting out hair. The only time i'd suggest a Lasso Tool is if you're just cutting out something quickly. This method seems to make the cleanest cut, at least for me.

Thank you. I will definitely try this next time

There's a few different techniques out there, I just find this one to be the easiest way and most accurate.
