Description I have not seen many prolific artists that are as good as .

Bob manages to produce beautiful fractals everytime he pushes the render button. His pieces are not only beautiful, but of the highest rendering quality.

Apophysis is, after all this time, a program which has not unveiled its hidden secrets to most users. Eversince I started using it, I realized those beautiful renderings could never be the final piece. They should be only a part of more complex multilayered collages. The same goes for other excellent programs as Chaoscope and Xenodream. They should work in a way not exactly the way UltraFractal does but the Photoshop way. Only in this program, renders coming from those excellent pieces of fractal software may reach their full potential beauty.

I had given up making collages for the last months. But as I kept looking at those beautiful renders by *gateman45 , I knew I had to try once more, so I asked for his permission to try and he gladly said "go for it"! So, here it is.

I see a hot busy shore where creatures of all kinds enjoy a holyday in an ancient time, and I mean some millions ago by ancient! The central character, Mr. Cricket, seems to lead the whole pack of happy animals. What I donΒ΄t really know is whether they are waiting to be called for a camera test for 4500 Million Years and Sheltered Undersea or if they happen to actually be the offspring of the original characters depicted on those previous scenes! lol.

All programs mentioned above are represented in this collage, mostly Apophysis, but the Xenodream renders play an important role in the whole composition. The Chaoscope rendering is there adding a subtle yet definitive touch.

I used 24 of Bob's best pieces for this collage. You might not see that many individual images in here, as some of them were used to make up the background and texures. The original size is 6667 X 5000 . After all previous experience, actual coupling of all those images took only about 3 - 4hrs. mostly because my dinousar, sorry, pc at my office is way too slow. Nevertheless, you stats lovers should take into account the enormous amout of time it took Bob to create and render these 24 pieces in order to have an accurate perception of what's it all about!

The final psd file is almost 600 Mb. I am posting a zip file with

1024*768,
1280*960 and
1600*1200

resized images.

The original pieces by Bob that were used are as follows:

4 Rhiannon
4 Roger
A Look Into
Badge
Cone
Countertop
Daylight
Feathers
Fire
Fun With Discs
Just To See
Kelp Bed
Metal Piece
Mr. Cricket Goes To College
Mr. Spiral
Neon Leon
Re - Occurrence

i have to dissagree with you. personally i think people who mess with a pure fractal too much take away from fractals. if you produce a really good fractal it doesnt need to twisted and contorted using other programs. really i understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but to it often is like taking the mona lisa and throwing a shitty looking photoshop filter on it and calling it beter.

that said, do what you feel is beautifull. thats the joy of art, make it for what you feel is art.

It is your opinion, biased though, based on prejudices about purism imho, I don`t base my idea about art on those kind of rules, and have for some years be amazed that newer generations do what previous generations to mine used to do. Oh well, hope this does won`t start an unwanted thread.

BTW, doing that kind of things to the Gioconda is a valid art decission imho, it doesn`t guarantee the result will be an improvement or not, but it is valid anyway. If someone says it`s better, that's his/her own perception. If someone says it`s worse, that's his/her own perception too. I think for instance Metallica did a shitty job versioning Whisky in the Jar, as Thin Lizzy had produced the final version two decades before, but on the other hand, many songs from the 40's and 50's were much improved in following versions in the 60's and 70's. The same goes for any kind of art.

Back to what I originally tried to convey is this: Both Apophysis and Chaoscope, and to a certain extent Xenodream too, work with fractals against a most of the time black background. No matter what background they use anyway, the background itself is NOT a part of the fractal. SO, it is valid, and imho more valid, to assume that the fractal part of the rendering could be as well drawn against a transparent background. In fact, it should. If any of those programs were capable of working in a way as to produce the final render in a psd file with transparent background, perfect fractals could be transported to phoptoshop to work with them as an element of a more complex composition.

Other 3D programs work like that, and I guess you know it, 3DS, Poser, you name it, they do never produce a final render, what they produce is used either in complex animations or multiprogram 3D scenes, and no one says it`s wrong. Apo, Chaoscope and Xenodream, are 3D fractal programs. Why should the renders coming from them be treated differently? Can`t see no valid reason.

Finally, fractals are 3D objects found in nature all the time. Clouds, trees, crystals, shells etc. And ALL of them are part of multi-object scenes. Show me just one render of a non fractal 3D object that can`t be improved by being transported to a more complex scene and I will admit you`re just right!

then you should look at a fractal pluggin for photoshop called kias power tools.

the big reason i prefer to see people like gatemans fractals is that he spends a long time fine tuning and coming up with a finished product that does not need manipulation. irony being what it is. i enjoy doing photomanipulations.

BTW I have that plugin, I donΒ΄t like it too much. The fractal generator for PS I mean, the rest I use.

J-a-v-i-e-r In reply to BaronVonBarbeque [2005-07-03 12:13:58 +0000 UTC]

IMHO I believe thatΒ΄s a wrong assumption. Deviants these days give excessive importance to time spent on a certain piece. Thta doesn't make it a valuable piece anyway. I've seen dozens of shitty pieces faved only because the artist said in the comments he/se spent weeks on the piece. ThatΒ΄s not Bob's case anyway.

Now, as you should know, no finished and polished and technically perfect product needs manipulation, as you should know, these are not done to improve the piece, but to create a different scene, with a different mood.

Just imagine for one moment that the creators of the fractal programs would have managed from the very first software verions, to give the user the option to select no background for the render. Users who would have selected that option would be looking at the pure fractal (indeed, what you are used to see is not the pure fractal, but a fractal on a usually black background). If such an option would be chosen, no matter how perfect the resultant image would be, something would have to be done with it. ThatΒ΄s not the case, but thatΒ΄s what I see in every render, so I try to imagine where can those beautiful fractals belong, I believe you canΒ΄t prove me wrong.

So, if I was to make a manipulation of fractal images, why should I choose the lousy ones? I chose the best. I asked BobΒ΄s permission and he said go for it, period.

Art is passion, only judge it by passion. Do not judge it by perfection, effort, time, or whatever. You are judging technology instead.

Prove these wrong:

After reading the inter action comments back and forth. Very well said Javier.
And the final summation... "Art is passion, only judge it by passion. Do not judge it by perfection, effort, time, or whatever. You are judging technology instead." Totally!
