wow! this is really interesting. I've been trying to draw portraits but I don't go much in shading because I might ruin them. I've always been drawing anime styles for such a long time but I want to explore more techniques. This is very helpful, really.

Thank you! One thing that i've learnt over the past year or 2 is that if you want to improve you cant be afraid, if you want to add shading but are worried that it will ruin the drawing then just go ahead and start shading, you'll never never if your good at something unless you try I know this from personal experiance, i used to draw my portraits really light and they never really stood out because i was too afraid to go darker with the shading, however once i built the confidence to go darker my drawings improved alot over the next few attempts. So just give it a try

thanks for the advice! Just yesterday, I attempted coloring with color pens. It took me a lot of effort to ink it and I'm really happy with the outcome! But when I colored it using those color pens I just bought the other day, it was really awful...I was like, "I have to use this because if I don't I won't be able to practice using it. If I will use colored pencils again, there won't be fun anymore..." So I used it. Though it turned out to be awful, I know I should practice to be really used to using it like what I did with the colored pencils. Thanks for the advice again, I know I can use that in every artwork I will do in the future!

Your welcome
Ah yeh i can be a bit dis-heartening when you try something new and it doesnt turn out great on the first try but you just need to stick at it, though sometimes if it doesnt work out a few times in a row it could be a good idea to choose an alternative that you might be more comfortable with. Such as using water color paints instead of pens to colour for example, theres loads to choose from
No worries, let me know if you need anything i am happy to help!

(But I donΒ΄t think youΒ΄re a beginner =O it seems that you have some experience in drawing portraits )
Ah well... The writing is a bit too small (for me).
All in all this tutorial is really helpful, you did a great job
May I recommend another tutorial, which is really helpful, too?

Okay, I see. But for your first major portrait itΒ΄s really really good!
IΒ΄m practising a lot to become better at drawing people, itΒ΄s really hard.
Great! I hope itΒ΄ll help.

JackEavesArt In reply to BenFreaky [2010-01-02 19:45:52 +0000 UTC]
Thanks again
Well, i find that if you want to get good at drawing people then practice is very important and drawing from photo's is very good too.
Also if you need help on shading for skin texture then look up the 'Circulism' technique, i found that that technique really help my drawings look better.

BenFreaky In reply to JackEavesArt [2010-01-03 10:18:51 +0000 UTC]
Yes, youΒ΄re right. Practise is the key ;D.
I always use a photo and then I make a grid, itΒ΄s really helpful for me.
This technique is really good! I already used it^^. But itΒ΄s hard for me to draw darker shadings, because it always seems kind of false you know what I mean?
Nevertheless thanks for the tip^^.

JackEavesArt In reply to BenFreaky [2010-01-03 17:46:47 +0000 UTC]
I think i know what you mean. I found it hard to go darker when i started out as i didnt want to ruin the drawing, but trust me it does make it look better 90% of the time. Just remember to get darker but adding layers, don't press harder to go darker - that can ruin things
π: 0 β©: 1
BenFreaky In reply to JackEavesArt [2010-01-03 20:50:10 +0000 UTC]
Yep, I always have the same feeling that itΒ΄ll ruin the drawing.
Thanks for your advice.
IΒ΄ll try it the next time.

Phytophyte In reply to ??? [2009-09-29 17:16:39 +0000 UTC]
It's a good tutorial, but I think the point you hit best is how much time it takes to draw. I've seen dozens of pictures and tutorials where the artist gives how much time it takes to finish it, but that's it. I never knew exactly when and how the time was used. Is it used in the initial sketch? Is it used in the flat tones, or in the shading? When?
Your tutorial just up and out tells me that I'm going to be spending a few hours on each tiny part. It's extremely helpful, because it tells me to focus small and hard. That, I think, is the most powerful part of this tutorial.

Thought I would take a quick look at this and I like it. One of the things I have always found useful is blending stumps and chamois leather for blending different textures in the paper. The chamois tends to work best on the lightest areas near the highlights and the blending sticks for the transitions from dark to light. I have an ebook on other tools and there uses that I can maybe e-mail you. I've been drawing for years and it came in very useful.
Keep on experimenting Your stuff looks great so far.
