Description One of five new Arkham Horror playmats released by Fantasy Flight Games. This was also commissioned as a work anniversary piece for a couple of FFG employees (after 5 years, employees get their likeness put into a piece of game art as a fun "thank you").

Your work for Arkham is an inspiration whenever I have to do something similar, but you nail it.

I really appreciate it, Diego! Haha the guy I always look up to for Arkham stuff is Cristi-B . His atmosphere and compositions are so cinematic it makes me feel like a total amateur haha. Lots of great FFG artists out there (including you)!

The inspiration in this scene alone is overwhelming. Loving these.

In 2013, I wrote a small book in french, called Madluck you can find it on Amazon.
It was Call of Cthulhu inspired and my main character used the same bike.

I was quite surprised to see a picture which could have straight fit in the book or one of its sequels.

Truly nice action scene

Hahaha what a cool coincidence! The client didn't actually specify this exact bike in the commission brief, so you and I must be on the same wavelength!

By the look of the picture, one could think you've really liked The Mummy trilogy. Or at least, it kind of reminds me to those movies.
Awesome, nonetheless.

I'd say that's a very safe assumption haha. The first Mummy from the 90s was like my favorite movie for a while when I was a kid!

Poor Krabby. These Alolan Forms are getting out of control. I kid, I kid.

I really like this piece. I'm always impressed with how you can put something in the background and cover it with layer upon layer of atmosphere and still have it look imposing. The obvious solution would be to have Krabby (can I still call him that?) detailed and in the foreground, looming large over everything. But having him in the background, way over there, and still able to threaten our intrepid heroes makes him seem even more threatening. Definitely gets across that whole Lovecraftian "The monster doesn't actually give a crap about you and you're going to die" feeling. (Not that I know anything about Lovecraft, but uh *ahem*)

My only complaint would be that the facial expressions are a bit over the top. On the other hand, Shotgun guy probably has the exact same face I'd be making in that situation, so...

JakeMurray In reply to thereallinebyline [2016-11-22 15:16:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, atmosphere can work wonders when it comes to making things look imposing and menacing. When it comes to horror, it's usually the things we can't see that are the scariest, so the atmosphere helps to obscure our view just enough to give a sense of dread and mystery. Additionally, the more atmosphere between the viewer and the object, the farther away it is from you. So given that our crab guy is still so large in the composition, but waaaaaay back into the atmosphere, it implies that he is really, REALLY big.

As for the expressions, I totally agree with you. Since this was a special commission from the client to put two of their employees into the piece, it was a lot more difficult because I'm at the mercy of those individuals' acting ability and the client's ability to photograph them. Ultimately, I have much less control over the reference material I get. So I pretty much have to work with what I'm given and try my best to make it not look too goofy haha. Sometimes it works better than others.

Yeah, I can see how that can limit you. You've done pretty well in spite of that, though.

JakeMurray In reply to Ryanator50 [2016-11-19 23:19:55 +0000 UTC]

Just a typical big interdimensional tentacle crab haha. The client didn't request that it be any specific Lovecraftian horror - just that it be something that might fit within that universe.
