You are right, there is no particular connection here. And I probably took it for the exact reasons you mentioned. If you asked me to explain this shot I'd say...not even sure what I would say. The only explanation I can offer is I'd had an SLR for three months and was still finding my place in photography.

Wow.
What substantial comments.
You know, when I first saw this I wasn't too keen on it. As in, neither liked or disliked it. But it's definitely a grower, I'm really liking this now.
I'm enjoying looking it over, exploring the image. There is so much here, that you just don't see if you just glance at it. I think that's a big problem with people here. They don't take the time to sit down and drink it in. Art is not just for looking at, it's to be experienced. I don't see what the rush is!
I adore the off-kilter angle here, I think any other photographer would have got rid of the end of the path in the background. I'm glad you didn't. The texture is fucking gorgeous, I want to reach in and feel the roughness of the ground. This is helped enormously by the black and white and the sexy as hell contrast. Yeah, thank God this isn't colour. I love how dark this piece is, it gives it a wonderful atmosphere. Kind of creepy but not. It makes you feel ever so slightly uneasy. Which is great because it should draw you in, although it's not happened to most people who've commented. Focus and DOF is perfect. It just works.
The man. OH MAN. The position is absolutely spot on. The perfect example of when to break the rules, and it works so well. Any more or any less and it would not work. I love how his coat is light and stands out so well against the dark of the rest of the photo.

perfect example on how a photography who looks so "wrong" does so much.
nice work mate.

tight DOF and i love the contrast as well - its definitely a questioning photo - what happens next? but i would have liked to have seen more of the man on the right hand side

great shot man, love the crop and the positioning...like someone else said, it leaves you wanting to know more - who's the man? where's he walking to? etc. etc.
lovely shot...the b&w really suits this photo too...

Good D.O.F. with the railings and the man. the contrast of textures is good too. I can't help but feel it would be even better if then man was slightly closer to the railings - but then that would have been a bit difficult to control! Congrats on the DD, a nice pic.

Just some feedback, hakfest, but on my monitor there's no detail in much the shadow area just to the right of the fence.
regards,
Jim

Absolutely beautiful. Because it's just that awesome. I love how the line of the wall makes your eye travel straight to the man, even though he is not exactly overtaking the frame.

I think this photo would be better if all of the posts or balls were in focus. I suppose the person meant this picture has a very limited depth of field, which works in this case. What kind of lens did you use?

This picture really hit me. Those wet(?) knobs and the fence made me think of childhood, thick green grass and fountains, and, for some reason, Within Temptation's song Never Ending Story. Delicate, yet powerful.

This photo could have no depth of field and still work, it's called impressionist

well.. i know what you are saying, but i guess thatthe point that I am trying to get across is that this photo would have been alot more effective if you had the dept of field in there.. there are some applications for impressionism.. however i dont belive that that was a very good application. as you will see if you were to look at my gallery, there are alot of impressionist photos... i guss that what im really trying to say is that all the impressionist qualitys that i would usually associate with a photo are not there with that photo.. however.. beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and the main point im making is that this was not effectively impressionistic to my eye..

I think the crop is GREAT, but I think what draws my eye most is the weight of the fence. It's so sharp in comparison to everything else that my eyes keep going there, instead of to the man.
