Rough concept painting, inspired by a Ryan Church DVD tutorial. Pleased.
I used a default photoshop round brush which I flattened. No initial plan to the design so it came about through happy accidents.

IMO it's too huge and unreal for 2080, I think it is near 2180's
Impressing!

I have to agree with ya - no way will a city on Earth look like this is 70 years. I suppose it could be set on another planet that uses a similar dating system to ours (not likely of course). Yes, that will do!

Cheers minor!

Very nicely done! I've spent at least 15 minutes now studying this painting to try and work out your steps. Any words of advice for a design student come concept artist?

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to CyanBoxes [2011-08-28 21:09:37 +0000 UTC]

Hi Cyan, thanks for your comment. The best tutorial for this type of thing would be by Ryan Church. It was this very tutorial that I learned from. [link]
I set up a simple 1 point perspective grid and used a default soft round brush to paint the sky. All very loose, as it can be changed later.
I only used several layers, painting straight blocks with a default round photoshop brush, which I flattened in the brush's settings (angle 0%). Hold down shift as you draw, to get straight lines.
I started from the background, making sure the distant blocks were lighter than the nearer blocks (atmospheric perspective). Then I added the lighting to the sides of the blocks, using a default soft brush, which was set to color dodge, 50% orange/yellow. I then added the shadows (guess work) with a soft brush again. I refined the detail, by adding to and deleting from the blocks (finally beginning to look like buildings) and added random lights with default square brushes. Believe me, it took loads of changes but I actually completed it very quickly (for me), about 2 evenings. If you go to my profile page you will see a list of links to my favorite tutorials. These are so good - they are done by the real experts, and they talk you through everything. I learned more from these DVD's than anything else. They go on for hours, painted mostly in real time so you can see everything they do. They keep the numbers of layers to a minimum, painting very roughly to start with, not getting carried away with fussy details. This saves loads of time. The use of photoshop is minimal - it's basically painting straight onto layers and then using the color dodge mode to add lighting. Perspective and Value are the key ingredients, not detail and over designing. The design can get more complicated at a later stage, if needed. Concept art is almost always loose - matte paintings are far more refined and pixel perfect. Any concept artist must be able to draw environments, so look up any tutorials about atmosheric perspective, color values, perspective, and concept art.

Here are some excellent resources for free tutorials. The first link has tonnes and tonnes of tutorials and the artist tells you loads about the role of a concept artist. However, he doesn't give too much away about the basics of painting, so it might leave you feeling blown away and disgruntled like me. He owns an art school so obviously he can't give everything away or he would have no students of course.

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to Tami19 [2011-08-21 11:29:11 +0000 UTC]

Cheers Tami. For some reason this was done quicker than usual - sometimes the better ones just happen, without all the fussing about for weeks on end.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tami19 In reply to JamesLedgerConcepts [2011-08-23 09:34:03 +0000 UTC]

I agree totally. I can do a rough sketch and it turn out better than when I actually sit down and take my time drawing. Weird how it happens like that hey?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to Tami19 [2011-08-23 12:57:31 +0000 UTC]

Indeed - if a composition is not happening I can tell it's probably gonna get worse with all the fussing. As I am told, the endless details won't make a bad composition good. 'Experts' tell me that the composition needs to look good even in it's rough stage. Maybe your rough sketches look natural and not as contrived or forced as when you sit down and plan? I know this is true with me. Even worse, I hate it when a good starting sketch is ruined by over doing it (guilty). I chuck away (recycle) loads of paper. It's all learn, learn, learn...!

Yes I tend to try and 'perfect' waaaay too much and then get frustrated when it stuffs it up. So I know where you are coming from.
