Description The 2nd painting I created for Opposable Games. opposablegames.com/ This image is not available to buy as it's copyrighted by the client.

You guessed it, the vanishing point tool, and all the usual stuff from scratch. Took about 4 days again. All created in Photoshop CS5.

A shipwreck is discovered by a small salvage craft.

I do keep forgetting that these are to someone else brief - sorry about that!

Spacewrecks for me are always peppered with micro-meteor damage and the result of a warp core explosion (or similar pseudo science) and so always have plenty of damage!

Thanks - I was never really happy with the end result, which is why there isn't a version here, just the faux cover on my site... And I'm not really sure why - it just doesn't look like the version in my head.

Like the laser light on the hull of the ship. I would have made hell-a-ton of lights and sources instead, but this is much more stylish and clean, love it.

Beautiful work!
Have you ever come accross the Terran Trade Authority series of books? They've some superb writing and images on space wrecks and recovery you might enjoy

Thanks - it might be, as mine is now calibrated correctly. I used to have my screen too bright but eventually realized when I created all my paintings too dark.

I really like the different lighting in the this pic
the galaxy/nebula lighting from behind is really neat and I like that it highlights the wrecked ship's outline
and the scanning light is a great spot in the dark area of the pic
^u^

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to Nomakai [2013-03-26 10:44:22 +0000 UTC]

Excellent - thanks Nom - I often use this type of lighting as it helps to make a shapes silhouette stand out. It also means less detailing and complicated light/shadows compared to having the light hitting the object directly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nomakai In reply to JamesLedgerConcepts [2013-03-26 17:49:29 +0000 UTC]

haha less detailing yes
but it gives the object a sense of mystery because there isn't all that detailing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to Nomakai [2013-03-26 22:52:27 +0000 UTC]

Exactly - luckily less is often more.

Ludo38 [2013-03-25 15:54:02 +0000 UTC]

Excellent... I love the volume of the ship and how you detailed the picture.
Just a detail that makes me wonder : in the void of space, I guess the laser beam plan shouldn't appear. We should see it only at the start and on its target surface. But well, that would make the effect too invisible to be understood by the viewer... Did you think about that ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to Ludo38 [2013-03-26 10:41:55 +0000 UTC]

Cheers Ludo - yes, I realized the only real way to see it would be through smoke or mist, but of course there wouldn't be any local stuff like that. I had to use artistic license on this occasion - otherwise people would wonder why the beam was almost invisible. I studied quantum electrodynamics and when ever someone asks me to do something with light'lasers/glows etc I know I am going to have to fudge it somehow. Light is amazing on occasion, but there are some things it just can't do in reality.

winterwolf2112 In reply to JamesLedgerConcepts [2013-03-26 21:22:51 +0000 UTC]

The universe is full of dust and gas. The laser beam could be seen in the right conditions. If this wreck took place in a nebula you could go crazy with color!

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to winterwolf2112 [2013-03-26 22:51:44 +0000 UTC]

There would be so much light scattering I would have to paint the ship in all its glory which is always harder than a darker image of course.
