Very large image, it might take a while when you click to enlarge. For the full size, you'll need to download.

UPDATED- Darkened letter color so as not to be so bright for LCD monitor users (I still think they need to calibrate them, default red (Red 255, Green 000, Blue 000) shouldn't be so bright or "dangerous" to the eyes.)

I've worked a lot of hours on this lesson but I know it wasn't a waste of time, I do like to share talents with others and make their lives a bit easier

Thank you for this tutorial. Been curious about how UE can help the image look better. I will try it out. Just hope PC will be able to handle it and that the render time won't take long 2-3 hours. It takes good hour to two to render a bit more complex scene without UE.

It didn't turn out good. I had fear the computer wouldn't be able to render it and it was confirmed when it crashed about 2 hours in. And this was on DAZ 3. I can't even try out this on DAZ 4 pro as that version simply crashes without any warning or anything on basically everything. Is it render options or lack of ram no idea. It frustrates me to no end and I'm fighting the battle with lighting in general still.

Aha, I used to experience that as well till I found a way to cheat DS for a feature it doesn't have... in Poser, you can partial render (and it recommends you to) so that you're not loading it all on the machine at the same time, in DS, there's no such feature. Here's a way you can... [link] I really hope it helps you!

You're absolutely welcome, friend! I had it for a long time too before I can even use it, then finally learned bits and pieces, seen images using it, rolled up my sleeves, then dug in it, learning every parts of it. Lot of fun, lots to learn, but it was too challenging to me when I had no idea what it did I'm glad my lesson helped you, friend!

A note on your shading rate setting in the tutorial: 2.0 is too low to get the quality shown in the last image. A setting of 0.5 is good for high quality. Raise it to 0.2 or even 0.1 for renders meant for large prints.
Maximum trace distance is essentially how large your light is. Say you set it to 1000, you get a very diffuse light with barely imperceptible shadows, like you would find on a cloudy day or a very large diffuser. Whereas an MTD of 10 produces something akin to a standard 10k light in a studio, albeit without a projected shadow.
A note on overall quality: Be sure to adjust the settings in the advanced render tab within DAZ Studio; it makes a world of difference. Match the shader rate of both Studio and UE2, and raise your shadow samples to 32 to get nice quality, and raise your pixel samples to 12x12 or even 16x16 to clear up DoF problems. The following is a really good primer on Renderman settings, which the 3Delight engine is based on:

Your addition of stock lights and specular-only settings are spot-on.

Quality UE setting... the last image did have the UE shading rate to 2.00 with the render shading rate at 0.50, in fact all the images did. They still seem ok to me. Had a lower end machine at the time as well as a lot of people did (and some still do), so a setting of 0.2 was pretty much overkill at the time for us poor folks LOL. Note the date of submission, we weren't in the "near realistic" age yet for DS users.
"Say you set it (MTD) to 1000, you get a very diffuse light with barely imperceptible shadows, like you would find on a cloudy day or a very large diffuser. depends on how much stuff you have around, 1000 can make things pretty dark looking. And as you can see on the renders, with my settings at 500, you saw shadows pretty clearly even with two distant lights pointing in one direction, one with shadows and one without, though not too dark (natural looking shadows in a nicely lit environment).
"A note on overall quality: Be sure to adjust the settings in the advanced render tab within DAZ Studio; it makes a world of difference. Match the shader rate of both Studio and UE2, and raise your shadow samples to 32 to get nice quality, and raise your pixel samples to 12x12 or even 16x16 to clear up DoF problems. The following is a really good primer on Renderman settings, which the 3Delight engine is based on:" Again, this lesson was at the time most folks didn't have that high end of computers, your settings would've crashed them. Even today these settings seem pretty harsh, you have to remember, most people don't have a computer like yours, even I still don't.
Overall this is an old lesson and I've since learned a bit more, there's been times I wanted to re-do this lesson but it took a long time to do it and I don't have the time I had then. As for the two distant lights pointing in one direction (team lights... one without shadows applied), there's really no need for that as you can set UE to where your shadows aren't so dark. And specular lights I usually set them about 30%, bright blue (again depending on the specular settings on your character/props), I don't set them so high anymore, too shiny for how I do things.
Thanks a lot for your input, buddy, when I get my new high end computer, I'm gonna play around with your suggestions

Thanks for the feedback dude, what about the skin tho, should it look like that? I'm just starting to go thru your UE tut now btw

jamminwolfie In reply to IanTP [2011-12-04 10:35:10 +0000 UTC]
Aside from all the dots (forgot what they call them) the skin looks fine I think. To rid those dots, set your occlusion samples to 128 and shading rate to 8.00 and lower (best quality) on the UE light. If that doesn't totally rid them, then set your render shading rate lower. I have mine on 0.50, lower would be better, but my system's not up to par for it.

thats probably the answer, i didn't alter anything in any of the light settings, the interesting thing was, i tried to recreate the scene in DS3A (without genesis obviously!) and the light set i used in DS4 wasn't listed, so i guess it was a DS4 only set? I'm going thru your tut now, and the results are looking good to say the least, I don't seem to have the 'vertical tiles or vertical offsets in my surface settings, I have Map Tiling U and Map Tiling V both which are set to 1.0 by default.
I am going to change the lighting to UE2 in the 'honey' scene and see how it looks, after i finish your tut! Thanks for everything, wolfie (if i may call you wolfie?)

I never really spent anywhere enough time and effort learning to use UE... about the time I was getting to use it, I got DS3A and Reality, and I've been spending my effort on learning Reality/Lux Render... But it is sooooo time consuming.

Yea, I agree, as great Lux is, it's very time consuming and you just don't seem to get enough done that you want lol. I didn't forsake it though, just going back and forth basically, didn't want to give up my three years learning and run to very slow Lux
