Okay, so since I'm not sure about selling my emotes, I thought I'd at least make the pattern(s) available. This PDF has the patterns for 8 of the emotes I've done so far:
For the two I haven't included, I can't remember the patterns of the facial parts (that's what I get for not writing them down right away
More emoticon crochet patterns:
EDIT:
Whoops, noticed a little mistake in my wording for the assembly of
Nothing too wild, the old patterns work just as well.
EDIT 2:
You guys are crazy, you know that? Another DD?
Happy to know they're so well received, though. Hope you enjoy.
And many, many thanks.

Patterns free to use. Have fun.
(If you've made emote plushies using my patterns, I'd love to see them and if you upload photos, please credit me and link to this deviation. Thanks.)
No selling - either of the pattern or of the finished emotes!
I don't do it, you don't do it.

no, that means the beginning of the round moves.
working in spirals, if you mark the beginning of a round, you'll notice it'll move back for about 1 stitch every 2 - 3 rounds. to even that out, you'll add correction stitches. in case of round 7 that means you crochet up to the end of the round and keep going for 3 stitches more. there are still only 36 stitches in the round, you just start the 8th round later.
does that help?

errrr... yep, i noticed a lil' offset, but thought it's o.k., cause it's spiral...
now, i'm gona stich "36 sc and than 3 more to close the row"? I can't find the difference between previous statement and "39 sc". And how there's 36 of 'em if there're 3 additional. I think, i'll check some webpages...
Again, thanks for reply.

close the row? so you're not working in spirals? because if you do, you won't need to close them, you just keep going.
the 3 additional you'd work into the first 3 of the same round, which would be the first 3 of the next round, if you didn't crochet the correction stitches.
if it's still not clear enough, I can make a photo of the process over the weekend and show you. I'm working on a new project anyway and will need to do a ball for it.

yep, that's how I do it.
sure, you can just change color while crocheting the rounds, but I found that to be very unsatisfactory. the edges never get to be that clean, and at least with the eyes of , the resulting 3D effect is actually wanted.
and I'm glad you'll have some use for the base shape. it's adapted from patterns I found online and didn't really like the resulting shape of (or the fact that they involved sewing halves together).

Congratulations on the DD! And thank you so much for sharing your pattern. I hope to make my friend's emote for her birthday using it.
I'm a little confused by the correction stitches even though I've read it over and over...would you mind explaining them to me?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
janey-in-a-bottle In reply to MissterAndy [2011-10-20 09:08:08 +0000 UTC]
thank you for the interest.
theoretically, with a rather simple pattern like this one, you might not even need those correction stitches, but I'm just so used to using them for all my projects...
hmmm, so how do I explain it better?
if you work in spirals, as it's done here, and you mark the beginning of each round, the longer the crocheted piece gets the more that mark wanders back, creating a diagonal. if you have a more complicated pattern where certain stitches have to be at certain places, you'd suddenly have them in the wrong place, if not for the correction. those stitches do nothing more than to "fill up" the round to get to the original starting point. that's also the reason those stitches aren't counted in the stitch count for the round that gets corrected, as there's no increasing involved. the actual stitch count remains the same.
so in case of round 7 for the base, you crochet 36 sc as the pattern indicates and then you'll crochet 3 more sc and start round 8 after that.
hope that helps.
if there are more questions, feel free to ask and I'll try to explain.
I'd love to see the finished emote, too. always curious about that.

Well I'm proud to say that I started the pattern a little bit ago and now I'm half finished. I'll post a picture of the completed emote for both you and her. that's what I call dedication!
for the easier ones, like or
, you basically only need to know how to start with a magic ring, how to do single crochets, how to increase and to decrease and for
how to do slip stitches. once you get the hang of the magic ring, the rest is easy enough.
there are tons of really good crochet videos out there where the stitches and techniques are explained.
good luck.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
janey-in-a-bottle In reply to VampArtemis [2011-03-03 10:10:45 +0000 UTC]
it's partly the pattern and partly the tight stuffing and kneeding/rolling the ball into shape afterwards.
I also crochet relatively tight stitches, which helps with the shaping, I think. (but from the looks of your little totoro, you do that, too.)
what you can't see on the photos is that all the emotes are a little uneven on the top. part of it is always a little flatter than the rest and no amount of shaping afterwards gets rid of it. that's something I haven't yet found a solution for. ah well.
go ahead and give it a try. good luck.
and thank you for the fav.

Your welcome for the fav
Yea I actually realized that too. Even with a bigger crochet hook (size 8 or H im using) I always liked making it tighter. I think it was because I wanted to gain a similar look to the plushie i was making as it would be with a smaller hook but with the bigger one. I actually started off making it loose and didn't really like it.
As for the emote ball... 8D I had a fire in my apartment building a month ago so all my yarn had to be thrown out from the smoke smell so I don't have my red yarn to make just yet but I grabbed some grey yarn because I wanted to make myself a grey totoro with the white one so I took my hand at making a
It came out fuzzy and messed up a little but that's what you get on a first attempt I guess 8D I'm going to post up the picture in a bit and you can see it. He's so adorable.

I wish I knew how to Crochet. cause this will be so cool.
how big is it if you make one?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
janey-in-a-bottle In reply to Jazzy329 [2011-01-22 14:40:28 +0000 UTC]
that depends on the yarn and hook size you use.
I use relatively thin yarn (125m per 50g) and a 3mm hook, so one is about 4.5cm (about 1.8") in diameter.
the thicker the yarn you use is, the bigger the finished emotes.
example: [link] (this girl used VERY thick yarn to follow my pattern )
if you don't know how to crochet, maybe you know somebody who can and is willing to make you one?

well my mom used to know how to crochet but she forgot how to. So I better start studying how to crochet, can you take a picture on the things you need to crochet? like yarn, hooks and others.
