Description
Here is a tool that I use a lot for my scenes and I thought I would share.I already have a tutorial showing how to set up a Reality light to have a viewport:
Sometimes the Reality light isn't going to work, particularly when you have to make the light surface disappear.
In these cases I use a number of primitive cubes, parented to the camera, as light sources. This way the light can be easily aimed, the light levels of the different panels can be adjusted, and the panels themselves can be hidden from the render camera.
I also have a second light set that has a backsplash blocker, which prevents extra light from radiating from the back of the mesh lights. This, however, can't be hidden from the render camera so it takes a bit more finesse in use.

This looks really handy! Thanks for taking the trouble to package it up. Thanks for you tutorial as wellβmesh lights are obviously essential for Lux but they are a pain to position!

Welcome. I am not a programmer or a modeler, so this is my only way to give back to the community a little.

Thanks! I did steal your light opacity trick to make it invisible.
I've been using these lights for a while now and it only just occurred to me that there might be some value in sharing.

Welcome!
I like using this one when I need to refine the light a bit more than the normal curved light allows. I.e. having the side lights stronger or lighter than the main light, or applying different textures to them.
It is also handy for applying specific light to a scene where none would normally be. And being able to make the light source invisible. I know its unnatural, but sometimes necessary.

Yeah, the invisible deal and the control (intensity and textures) really appeals to me.

This image is a good example of where I used it:

Without the light rig the doorway figure was naturally washed out to just an outline. With the light rig I was able to throw light onto her without the light source showing and minimizing the splash light.

Just fooling with it now .... Is it me, or does Lux render FAST with this light??Β I find using two meshlights can be really slow, even on my quad-core machine.Β But with this light, Lux goes a LOT faster!Β Reason enough to like it!!Β I'll be posting something in the next day or two, and this looks like it might be my go-to light!!

Possibly, I have never really done a cross comparison regarding the render speed. Usually I use one or two of these in addition to normal mesh lights.
If I had to venture a guess it might be due to the simplicity of the cube primitives. Maybe they are throwing light in a more predictable fashion? Whereas a more complicated mesh might send light in numerous directions?

Actually, it was my background... I had a very simple one, but once I changed it to my usual multi-material, mixed-glossiness, bump-mapped to hell background , the speed dropped off dramatically, as it usually does.Β Complex backgrounds and high resolution equal SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW rendering.

That makes sense. I have had a similar experience with certain backgrounds.

I just posted a render that uses this light setup.Β Not sure if the content is to your tastes, but here it is:

Very nice. Good use of the light. I like how it splashes but doesn't make the unrealistic light that the IBLs usually result in.

Great. Let me know how it works. I am still tweaking the effort.
