Description
My latest project... continuing my seemingly never ending quest to fully comprehend the volumetric effects and settings.I decided that I wanted to have a visual representation of the Scattering vs. Absorption settings so that I could easily compare and comprehend the interactions of the two.
The Scattering and Absorption were broken down to 10% increment values.
This is the same scene, rendered repeatedly, with just the Scattering and Absorption numbers changed. The scene is Stonemason's "The Ministry Prop" which I chose for the simple black and white textures. A single Reality light is positioned up, outside of the prop, shining down at an approximate 45 degree angle. Camera is positioned inside the prop, not within the volumetric cube.
To remain consistent, the lighting was left at "Auto Linear" in Luxrender.
Each scene was then rendered to a consistent 5k sample level.
Not all of the scenes have been rendered yet. I still have about 60 left to go. And, unfortunately, alphabetical order resulted in the most complicated (and least useful) scenes to be rendered first.
However, it did produce enough results to test as a proof of concept. Plus it is making me consider doing a second version of this narrowed down to just the upper left hand corner. It seems like that 25% of the scale would show the most dramatic difference.

I just realized that I never posted the final images to this. Sorry, slipped my mind.
I am going to try and remedy that over the next couple of days.

Upper left would probably show what would be most useful to those who want to use varying degrees of the effect. I certainly know that I'd like to see what 10% scattering and 20/30% absorption looks like

Agreed. I should have the rest of the grid completed by Sunday. Then I think I will run it again, just focused in on the upper left 25%.Either with bigger example images or more degree slices.
I also want to grid the other settings as well.

I probably should have mentioned why I chose to post this...
For one thing, I am trying to decide if the exercise is even worth while. Or if I should refocus it based on the results in the lower right hand quadrant. (Since those results are mostly useless.)
That and I still have another 2 days of rendering before the missing images can be added. Each image is taking about 35 to 40 minutes to process.
