Kimono how she appeared during the reign of King Sombra.
It is known that as one of the higher ranked royal guards she helped in the rebellion against the evil king but was captured in one of the raids. She was suppose to be put to death but instead she became a personal servant to the King while in power to show how he could break the highest among them to be his obedient slaves.

I found out about this character recently, and very glad she has a consistent history with her native Crystal Empire.

Well seeing as current day shes a guard / trainer of guards and that she lived when Sombra was in power I thought it would only make sense.

Well, indeed. Fortunate enough she was only made a slave, and not, you know, killed outright. Then again, having a champion as a slave is, as you say, a good way to show full control.
(Still unsure how Sombra actually did what he did...)
