Description A few months back, cartoonist Dave Alvarez hired me to write and draw a two page story for his Yenny comic book. Using his characters Yenny and Zacha, I crafted a story where the pair are watching a marathon of old 1930's cartoons (loosely parodying the Fleischer Bros. studios and their chararacters), and Yenny falls asleep and somehow gets drawn into that vintage cartoon world. I realize I probably should have posted these pages months back, but after having posted my Popeye tribute and having subsequently engaged in some very stimulating conversations with DA member HelixScape about our mutual appreciation of the Fleischers and Popeye, I figured now was a good time to share these pieces. Part II will be featured in a separate post. Hope you guys enjoy 'em.

And in case you couldn't figure it out for yourself, Yenny and Zacha are copyright Dave Alvarez.

Well, once again it's difficult to know where to begin!

One of the most obvious places to start is with the initial impact of the strip. As I previously mentioned - it looks action-packed without having to even delve into it. The stark contrast between the first colour-panel, and the monochromatic remainder works especially well, as it spruces up the look and feel without necessarily having to engage in the content. The initial panel is a good poke at the state of modern animation - with CGI being a particularly notable point. Naturally, CGI removes the actual painterly-portion of the process, so the clean, clinical results seem to become samey and unoriginal. Having this in the first panel quickly establishes the context for the strip.

From there on, things get very interesting, and very cool indeed! The novel way the panels are laid out makes great use of interesting and unorthadox shapes - helping to break up the typically box-box-box layout of most strips. Speech bubbles that intrude over the panel edges is a nice touch, and show a flair for interesting design. The third panel really establishes the new context in a very up-front and comical way, and you've really captured that Fleischer style!

Iris-less eyes, large mouths, strong expressions and action poses are key elements of this style, and you've utlised them all to great effect. Even the background - in its hokey, crooked style perfectly matches those wonky-esque, disjointed backgrounds of so many 30's and 40's cartoons. Later in the strip, we get to see another staple of the Fleischers - inanimate objects given subtle expressions, and seemingly arbitrary dialogue!

The flow of this strip works really well, and the work you've put into bringing it to life, in its old-world style, truly resounds through a combination of great design, outstanding research, and innovative and creative use of text styles and layouts. A truly remarkable peice!

The Animaniacs were probably based on Bosko: [link]
