Description The second installment of my "Gorch But Not Forgotten" comic strip. This time, we see what happens when innocent young Emmet Otter hangs around a bad influence like Ploobis!

By the way, anyone who doesn't necessarily get the references I'm making here is encouraged to visit Muppet Wiki and look 'em up. Or better yet, seek out these old shows and get a very entertaining education. Otherwise, I hope you can enjoy these for the artwork in the very least!

I'm glad someone remembers this special. It was one of my and dads' favorite Muppet XMAS specials growing up.

Oh-- be sure to tell Steve Swanson over at Muppetcast that you're doing these!

Can I request an obscure Muppet or two?

Cool! I really wanna see Digit from The Jim Henson Hour in one of these. And maybe some of the Dog City cast?

Emmit Otter's Jug Band Christmas is a great Christmas Special. Probably one of the few fan arts done about it. Good job!

Wonderful as always, Mr. Fosgitt. Seeing Emmet and Ma Otter was cool, and the third panel was priceless. Sam Turtle's steps didn't break because they were old; Ploobis' drunk ass broke them after wondering, "*belch* Whoa, why's the world fallin' backwards? *hic* WHOA!" XD Oh, Muppet Wiki's awesome, by the way

Y'know, in ToyFare #125, in the December 2007 calendar, they wrote, "A Christmas Story can suck it. The greatest holiday movie ever is Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, which celebrates its 30th birthday today!" -Dude, I hate to say it, what with me being a fan of both movies and all, but I totally agree with that. Emmet Otter pwns all

Emmet definitely comes in first, but A Christmas Story is a close second! Thanks for the kind words about the comic. There's gonna be plenty more obscure Muppet craziness to come!

You're welcome; any chance that will be seeing some characters from The StoryTeller?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JayFosgitt In reply to Goblinthegreat [2008-10-06 18:11:39 +0000 UTC]

I actually had a neat idea about Ploobis having to fill in for The Storyteller, so it'd just be Ploobis and The Storyteller's dog. Problem is, Ploobis wouldn't know any stories, so he'd just say "Um, there once was a man from Nantucket..." and recite this old dirty limerick! The Storyteller is probably the best work to ever come out of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, so I'm sure I'll have loads more ideas to use with those characters!

Fantastic! I'm loving these strips, and I can't beleive you found a way to include Emmett Otter and company. I hope you can keep these going for a while.

(Anyway you can squeeze Uncle Deadly into a future strip? He's one of my favorite Muppets.)

I only know these characters thanks to Muppet websites (namely the Muppet Wiki). The otter is very cute, and the contrast between the characters (and Henson's different creations) is very funny.

How about some of the regional characters Henson created for advertising? I still remember the Southern Colonel he did for Southern Bread! Oh, and if I'm not mistaken, there are bloopers from Emmett Otter on youtube...

Great stuff!

I love the La Choy Dragon! "Cooked in Dragon Fire!" If I'm not mistaken, he was Henson's first large, full costume muppet.

JayFosgitt In reply to JillianNC [2008-09-28 02:10:21 +0000 UTC]

I think you may be right, but I'm not absolutely sure. Thog was featured in The Great Santa Claus Switch which was in the late 60's, as was Spluge in Hey Cinderella in the late 60's. So it may be a three way tie for first full body character!

JillianNC In reply to JayFosgitt [2008-09-28 04:25:41 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...From what I can find, the La Choy Dragon (Delbert!) first appeared in 1966. There were 2 versions, a fullbody costume and a handpuppet. I remember seeing the commercials as a kid. (Gad, I'm dating myself!)

Check out this one for Kern's bread, still cracks me up!

Oh man, you trumped my Muppet ace by knowing the La Choy dragon's name! Brilliant! And thank you for linking me to those great old commercials! I'd only seen a couple of them! I have the book "Jim Henson: The Works" (which I believe any true Muppets fan should own) and there's this wonderful photo of the guys filming the La Choy commercial, with Frank performing the hand puppet version for a close up and Jim's principle builder Don Sahlin standing by with a fire extinguisher.

This conversation only solidifies my resolve to include Delbert in my Gorch comic somehow. And now that I know his name (and thank you for that), it'll be all the better a tribute!

Frank also performed the full-body version of Delbert as well while Jim provided the voice. Needless to say, it was Frank's ONLY time in a full-body Muppet.

Yeah, I'd contemplated having Emmet carrying a six-pack, but then I thought, no, keep his innocence intact and let Ploobis be the party animal!
