Description I suppose in some off-kilter way this is my follow up to "The Last Happy Meal." I'd been wanting to do something again with the McDonaldland characters, but nothing had come to mind. Then one day I was thinking about the cool (in my opinion) 1977 TV special "The Hobbit", and as is usually the case, my mind began to make it's own logical connections between different pop culture iconography (see my "Jay Ward's Watchmen" for another good example), and this was what was borne of it. I imagine there's plenty of die-hard Tolkien fans here on DA, and I hope they won't take offense that I took liberties with the designs of the dwarves or Gandalf or Smaug's tail whatever (though I think I'm pretty faithful to Gandalf here). But then again, "The Last happy Meal" garnished all sorts of controversy and turned out to be my most popular DA submission, so I suppose a little feather-ruffling could be a good thing. Regardless, I created this out of affection for both camps of iconography. Hopefully fans of each will be as pleased with it as I am.

Damn the food Nazis for making Mickey D's get rid of their cast of characters like the Hamburglar! This is one messed-up piece, with Hamburglar quoting Gollum. In my mind, I hear Sir Ian McKellen popping off that goofy line from Gandalf (but I still like him better as Magneto, esp. in his Shakespearean showdowns with Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier).

Kidding! It's still an awesome pic, Jay. Keep 'em comin'.

Honestly, I half figured someone else already had thought of it! After all, when I created The Last happy Meal, everyone and their grandmother pointed out to me that the documentary Supersize Me did something similar, though I'd never seen it. Glad you dig this piece!

Man, I don't know how you do it, but your pop-culture crossovers are absolutely brilliant, even when the two things you're crossing over have nothing to do with each other. Bravo!

Not exactly. I was thinking something like you draw half of a drawing and I draw the other half! I did that with cartoonist Greg Evans who draws Luann and it turned out totally cool! Let me know if you're interested.

I suppose, when I have some more free moments, I could give it a shot. I've tried to collaborate with artists in the past and it didn't end well, but you seem like someone who's much easier to work with. I'll keep it in mind!

Great to see this, Jay! I just love the expression on Gandalf; "Brother, did I scrape the bottom of the winebarrel on this one or what?"

Thanks for sharing, again... great follow up to your Last Happy Meal piece!

Wanted to add this from my prior comment: Mayor McCheese has made a comeback in the Southeast, as he's been revived to be a representation of the Corp. Franchises in Georgia, Florida and the like. Of course he doesn't really show up except at parades and official functions, but he's proof that Mc'Ds hasn't totally abandoned the McDonaldland Gang. ^_^

Allow me to be the first jerk to point out that there should not be fourteen dwarves!

They look awesome, though. I love how ragtag Thorin looks, and Gandalf's extra gnarly staff is awesome.

And allow me to say....fuck. Swear to god, there was only thirteen when I drew 'em! Where'd the 14th guy come from?!

Maybe they were sexist jerks who weren't counting the female members of the party. My guess? The one with the green cap who's winking.

There! I fixed it! While I may prefer to draw familiar characters in my own style, I'm not one to mess with Tolkien's original dwarf count!

Heh, I like your rendition of the Hamburgler - skinny like the old version, but not as goblin-like.

My suggestion for yet another follow-up: West Side Story, with the McDonaldLand Jets versus the Puffnstuff Sharks.

Well done!

Grimace was bad news?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

SRSobotka In reply to dynamicsketch [2007-08-25 21:12:46 +0000 UTC]

Hamburgler stole the cheeseburgers, and Grimace took all the milkshakes in McDonaldland. It wasn't until I think around the 1980's or so that McDonald's revised his character to be one of the friendlies -- along with Ronald, Mayor McChesse, Big Mac and Birdy the Early Bird.

Of course I wish they'd bring back Cap'n Crook. He was the third Big-Bad in the McDonaldland pantheon.
