Description
This is a new comic strip I intend to draw called "Gorch But Not Forgotten." It's essentially an ongoing tribute cartoon to the lesser known or forgotten Muppets, with the cast of the old Saturday Night Live Gorch episodes as the featured players. The plot is, King Ploobis and his brood have been out of work since their brief stay at SNL ran its course. Now they're doing whatever they must to turn a buck, while interacting with other obscure Muppet characters and occasionally reminiscing about the "good ol' days." Given that the Gorch characters were more adult than say the Fraggles, this comic will be a but more adult as well (as anyone who's seen my work will no doubt anticipate). But there's going to be loads of cool cameos and stuff happening that you wouldn't ever expect. I hope to surprise and entertain, myself if no one else.
Back in January of '06 I drew a Gorch strip that kicked off this long-simmering idea (in fact, this first strip is a re-tread of that original comic, though with far better art and more accurate depictions of the characters, in my opinion [link] ). Then a couple nights ago I watched the old Gorch sketches on the SNL season 1 DVD's, and the inspiration damn near drowned me. I was up all that night with swarms of ideas for the comic. I wrote them all down and, either until I run out of ideas or grow bored of the project, I'm gonna try to keep this baby going.
I'm going to post new ones as often as I can here on DA. It's not for profit, and it isn't with the permission of the Hensons'. It's just something I'm doing for fun, and if others get a kick out of it, all the better.

There's obscure pop culture references and then there's your obscure pop culture references. Good job at capturing muppets in this media, good gags in this (and the other strips).

'Fraid not. The first one was a bomb (as opposed to THE bomb), so it'll probably never happen.

I remember he definitely said there was and that it wasn't very good.
Maybe he saw the first one and got confused, it could be mistaken for a disappointing sequel in some of the slower moments.

I liked the movie when it came out when I was a kid (1986, age twelve), but I don't think it ages well. It really tries to be an early 20th century comedy trio film ala Marx Bros. or Three Stooges, but in the 80's that didn't work well at all. Not just in it being set in the teens/twenties, but the style of the jokes and the dynamic of the three dumb characters. Now Ghostbusters managed to bring the classic comedy team into the modern day by making it smart, hip, edgy, scary, sexy, the whole sha-bang. That's why they made a sequel, plus they really are in the works on a third with everyone returning (fingers crossed).
On a similar note, if you get the chance, rent "Brain Doners," a movie from the late 80's/early 90's starring John Turturro. It does the most literal translation of a classic Marx Bros. style comedy but in modern day, and it actually works. Some of the jokes are corny, but they really make that old comedy formula work.

Belushi hated 'em, but I loved 'em! If I remember correctly, they were among the first muppets with realistic glass eyes, rather than the standard look. Bring on the Mighty Favog! (And is there a chance that Crazy Harry hangs out at Hoggle's?)

I definitely plan to have Favog make an appearance, and let's just say that his uncanny resemblance to a toilet does him little good in the strip I have in mind!
I absolutely love Crazy Harry. I'm not sure if I'd use him necessarily if only because he may be a little too "Muppet Mainstream" for my purposes. Essentially, I'm trying to use the lesser known or completely forgot characters, background characters that may not even have names beyond descriptions of what they do in their skits (The "Beautiful Day" or "Got Anything Cheaper?" monster makes an appearance very soon). However, I'm known to break my own rules, so Harry may yet show up after all.
I know, it was always a conflict for me that Belushi hated the Muppets, since I was an equally big fan of his and theirs. What's ironic to me is how similar he really was in personality to Ploobis, and I intend to do a strip or to that deals with Ploobis thinking John stole his act.
And yes, while in the planning stages for the Gorch characters, all Jim Henson told Michael Frith (his designer) was "Kinda mossy with taxidery eyes." Pretty simple direction but it spoke volumes in the end!

What amazes me is that Frank Oz managed to not punch Belushi in the face while filming his cameo in The Blues Brothers. 'Course, by then, the Muppets were even bigger than they were in the '70's, so I suppose Frank could be the bigger man.

I still remember the ABC special that eventually became The Muppet Show. There was a dance scene (kind of like the "party" scene on Laugh-In), and Crazy Harry was leading a faceless muppet through the crowd, saying "This way, Tania!", right after Patty Hearst joined her kidnappers and called herself Tania...

Thank you! I don't know what it is about the Gorch characters...maybe that SNL killed 'em off before they could really develop as personalities...but I really love them. Especially Ploobis. It's almost eerie that I can see some of myself in him...and wrong. Eerie and wrong...

I'm not sure what happened either. I know that some fellas in SNL had misgivings about working with the muppets. I think someone sed "I don't work with felt."
Jim Henson sed that the meeting schedules were all mixed up, and they never really got the chance to go from A to B with the SNL writers. So who knows, eh? But what it could've become is something we can play around with! Eh?
Gahahahaaa!!

Oh yes, that famous quote was from the most twisted and self destructive SNL writer of the golden age, Michael O'Donoghue. That guy was a twisted jerk, to put it mildly. He was once accidentally cut out of a staff photo of the old SNL cast that was being taken for a women's magazine, and he wrote the editor threatening to...well, let's just say today it would get him, arrested just for mentioning it. The Muppets were better off without such negative influences, to be sure.

Hopefully people will come aboard already having a vague idea of who these characters are. I'm trying to involve too much exposition, and would rather let the gags come from people's (i.e. Muppet fans) understanding of the characters.

I'll most likely have all the Gorch characters, though I'm a little hesitant of Peuta. She wasn't a favorite of mine, and her design and performance did little to inspire me. Still, all the rest of the gang was great, and I'm VERY anxious to draw a strip with Vazh.
