Description
The fourth installment of my new un-Henson-sanctioned Muppet strip. This time around, it helps your understanding of the gag if you know a little about the late comedian John Belushi. He HATED the Muppets (which was a conflict for me, because I respected them and him alike). When he died of a drug overdose in 1982, journalist Bob Woodward (the guy who along with journalist Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate story in the 70's) wrote a scathing biography about Belushi that focused on his drug use.
The book I drew for the fourth panel of this strip is a very close approximation to what the cover of Belushi's bio looked like, all the way down to the fonts and colors. The swatch of pink behind Ploobis I actually pilfered from the actual Belushi bio cover.
While Belushi's book was titled "Wired," it seemed only appropriate that a self destructive Muppet's bio would be similarly titled "Arm Wired." Though I admit to that title being somewhat inappropriate, given that Ploobis didn't require arm wires due to his being a "live hand" puppet. Yes, I realize how big a nerd I am. I don't need you to point it out.
Oh, and major Muppet nerd points to anyone who gets the gag about the author of Ploobis' bio and the book he'd previously written.
I'm fast finding out that unlike in the old SNL sketches, Scred is proving himself the smarter of the two. That's a good dynamic, I think. Though I won't hesitate to have Scred involved in his own mishaps at some point in the strip.
I'm enjoying drawing these characters, but man, are they complicated, design-wise. Perhaps I should have chosen some simpler Muppets to create a strip around. Like this white wire-faced guys against the black backdrop who used to be shown on Sesame Street way back in the day. Of course, then my black marker budget would go through the roof....

I think I heard somewhere that Belushi and the other cast members didn't like the Muppets so much because they were taking away their screentime and their potential chance to shine, which I can understand. Everyone had seen the Muppets before, but nobody had even heard of those kids. So I'm not sure if he hated ALL Muppets, or just those Muppets. Maybe the cast would have been a little happier if they had the good ol', original 100% Muppety Muppets on the show(being their regular selves, of course, and not cracking dirty out-of-character jokes). Imagine Gonzo and Belushi being a team together, or Kermit and Gilda Radner being their adorable, sweet selves!

I realize I'm a little late in discovering these... but I've just recently discovered the existence of the Land of Gorch skits (and by existence I mean non-existence! All I can find without buying SNL's first season on dvd is some transcripts and I video of Scred duetting with Lily Tomlin...)
Anyway, you've rendered the characters BEAUUUUTIFULLY! They're incredibly complex-looking puppets and if it were me, I wouldn't have had a CLUE where to even start! So excellent job there. XD
And I'm thoroughly enjoying all the other muppet references going on too. And the fact that Bob McGrath wrote his bio. Hahaha... nice.
The nerdiness isn't lost on me. : D
Thanks for doing these! Really likin' 'em.

Is the dark side of the street a racism crack or a reference to his death?
also, arm wired had me rolling in the aisles, despite knowing that he had no armwiring.

Actually, Dark Side Of The Street was simply a joke that Sesame Street even could HAVE a dark side. Like Hooper's Store was a den of sin or something. I hadn't even considered that it might be misconstrued as relating to his death, but hey, people make their own connections.

Another great strip on rather a touchy subject. Al Franken and Tom Davis have admited to being under the influence while writing the Gorch skits (under protest) and Belushi, being the biggest user around, was probably a big inspiration to them. Also, anyone who knew Belushi really dispises Bob Woodward for writing Wired, especially Dan Aykroyd and James Belushi.

John Belushi hated the Muppets? Wow, I never knew that; I would've figured that he'd like them what with being a great comedian, and the Muppets being great comedians in the vein of vaudville-esque humor- that's really surprising. The line about Ploobis, Neil Armstrong, & Buzz Aldrin snorting Tang was priceless-Oh, and the Bob McGrath inside-nod was cool, too

Good lord, u know ur stuff!! Unfortunately, I didn't learn very much about the short-lived SNL muppets Jim had created. But reading ur comic is actually pretty damn educational for me! U learn somethin new everyday, right?
I luv ur tongue-in-cheek reference to Bob McGrath!! He was prolly one of my favorite human residents on Sesame Street. He still is, right? Or am I being stupid?

McGrath is Bob on Sesame Street isn't he? I assume the Hooper Street bit refers to Mr. Hooper's death.
I think as far as the detail of the characters, the color could be used to differentiate them. I know you go off the original designs, but making one of them just slightly brighter in value would help differentiate them. Good stuff buddy.
