When I first saw this drawing, it's fate that I had just found The Christmas Toy the day before, after what seemed an eternity of searching for it. I had this recorded on tape that was created in 1992, where my mother had recorded a TV airing of The Christmas Toy, along with many other cartoons and specials. After the tape was accidentally destroyed in 1998 by a spill of cola, I had to recreate the tape entirely from memory by using other means. I now own a digital copy, and I might want to find a VHS/DVD copy someday.
That said, this Jim Henson Special warmed my heart then and now. And when I happened to find this particular art piece, I was astounded that I wasn't alone. I thought for sure no one would remember this obscure and underrated Muppet-esque classic by Jim Henson's company.
The art itself is simple. But that's what makes it so good - what you see is what you get. When it comes down to it, I want to look at it from two perspectives - from the art itself, and what it represents to me.
Let's talk positive, as there is mainly positive stuff here. I'll suggest other art sequels if you will the creator can do, but that's for later.
1.) The art itself is very good for simple cel-shading. The essence of the special is captured very well - even though obviously it's not puppetry being used. But it's still quite good, and I feel considering the artist's style, it's pretty accurate at depicting Rugby and Mew's bond that developed within the 45 minutes of the puppet TV movie.
2.) Speaking of what it depicts, it IS very awesome. It gives me warm fuzzy feelings. Today was an off day, some of my friends are fighting and I can't do much to stop it. But this... reminds me true friends are the ones that'll stick with each other in the end, even if all else fails in life.
3.) It's so cool to see art of such a cool special anyhow, and it makes it unique as not many The Christmas Toy cartoons, comics, drawings or the like appear in this site. I don't have much to compare it to, but that's a good thing because I think that makes this piece shine.
And finally...
4.) The only not-so-positive point is a constructive criticism/suggestion, and it's not intended to be negative-negative. I'd like to see some more art like this from the artist related to The Christmas Toy. Apple would be cool, I thought she played a big part too, at least in trying to help convince Rugby of the problem he created. I won't tell here in case anyone reads this, I don't want to spoil much.
Just... there needs to be more of this special. It warmed my heart, and I'm not a big Muppets fan nowadays, and this renewed my interest in the Muppets and related works. So The Christmas Toy... I leave you with a question... which one of these two depicted in this art is The Christmas Toy? Both evolved quite a bit, and I can't decide... both are so cool. But I can relate definitely to Mew, the mouse depicted here more than Rugby.
I leave you with that. With the holiday season approaching, I'm glad to see people remembering more obscure Christmas specials, and this art makes my heart so fuzzy and warm on this rather cold day - in many ways it's cold. But this made it a little warmer. Enjoy!

I like The Christmas Toy special you refer to, I remember seeing it back on a tape made back in 1992 by my mother (she recorded a bunch). And I like this art piece a bunch.

And I must completely agree, when I heard there was a movie about a new toy that thinks it's real I said >cough cough< I liked this so much before when it was called The Christmas Toy!!!
(and no cheesy product placement in it)

i think that i've seen that movie. wasn't there like a rule that if a person saw the toy move the toy would never move again?

wasnt it a man from new mexico that came up with the idea first? he made a little short and sent it around to various film companies and directors...everyone loved the story so much that pixar contracted him first to make a full animation?

It would be nice to find out just who did come up with the living toy idea. The earliest I can think of is Raggedy Ann.

Oh, no harm intended. I do love Pixar. People just saw Toy Story back in the day and mistakingly thought they were the one's to come up with the "living toy" idea. In truth though, the Hensons hadn't thought of it originally either. I suppose living toys is an age old concept. But then again, so is puppetry, while CGI is still in it's infancy. Hmmmm....
