Description
By now, anyone who follows my work should not be surprised, hell, should probably be anticipating, that I draw Popeye a whole lot. I'll even proclaim that he's my favorite cartoon character, though all my followers are well educated in this little Fosgitt factoid by now. What's special about this piece is this:I sketched this piece at Mid Ohio, and sat it with my other sketches on my table. I didn't really expect it to sell, since my Popeye stuff rarely flies off my table at cons. But this one fella, probably in his late 40's to early 50's, comes up and starts gushing over my Popeye sketch. "No one ever draws Popeye at cons" he says to me. We end up having this wonderful ten minute discussion about all things Popeye, and he's thrilled that someone my age is so versed in Popeye trivia. It was just so nice to make a connection with another true Popeye fan (there's so few of us out there, it seems), and the capper was that he enthusiastically bought my sketch, when I'd previously had no hope of anyone wanting it. I was just glad it went to a true fan.
So yeah, this sketch is kinda special.

Cool story!
Your work kinda reminds me of Geo. Wildman's stuff - you both get that kinetic quality in your drawing. Example : [link]

It's always a nice feeling to know that the time and work you put into a drawing means so much to someone. Congrats and great work as always Jay!

Man, I'd love to see Popeye in your style! Find the time to do it, for us fans of your work if not for yourself!

Great sketch--Mr. Seegar would be proud. Also a nice story about meeting a true fan. Coolest Popeye sighting: at a local restaurant's parking lot, I saw a navy blue Willys Jeep decked out with Navy logos and insignia, and with a small statue of Popeye as the hood ornament. Now that I have a phone with a camera, I'd love to take a picture of it if I ever see it at the restaurant again.
