Description
My Korean original characters done on Open Canvas.Not my first Open Canvas pic, but the best one so far.
I'm not that happy with my coloring job, but the open canvas I have isn't giving me a lot of tools or options so this is the result. Dunno if I like Open Canvas or not. I do like the fact that I can actually draw with my table on here without my lines looking pixelly. My OC drawings have a sorta pencil drawing look to them. Tis pretty, I think. The coloring here tho, not too good, I'm afraid. But I really wanted to color them, since I already drew them in pencil various times in my notebooks. Hm, will have to attempt coloring them again.
They're Korean siblings that show up in my Rurouni Kenshin Post-Jinchu fanfic alongside Misao. As to why I decided to make them Korean...I can't really remember that well (tis been almost a year since I began thinking up my story). All I remember thinking was to make these characters as beautiful as possible (so I guess being from a different country adds to their exotism, besides Enishi provides the Chinese influence in the story). So although this picture doesn't do them justice, they are supposed to be very lovely. Going with standards from that time (or even today?) in Japan, the girl has really white skin, really black eyes and shiny inky black hair. (but since coloring black hair is hard for me, I gave her hair a purple-indigo tint).
As for the guy...my original intent was to make him look like a younger prettier/gentler version of Aoshi Shinomori. Yes, there will be a reason to it.
When I was plotting my fanfic, his character kept changing the most. Originally, he simply looked like a young Aoshi with high long ponytail included, but since I wanted to make him Korean, he ended up with a braid (copying Korean hairstyles before they were westernized). The second time I drew him, his bangs came out super long and parted on the side instead of the middle, hiding his right eye. Over several drawings, he's became prettier and suddenly familiar to me. I realized he looked like Ken Ichijouji from Digimon! Okay, not really, but the way I draw Ken is more realistic and pretty (and older) then the anime's skinny overly-simplistic style. So I had to re-examine him again before I turned him into Ken. XD;;
I did some online research on Korean names and found an article written by a Korean American. Not positive but for now the guy is either Kim Soon Shin (with Shin as first name) or Lee Soon Shin (which is easier to mouth than Kim Soon Shin I think XD). For now the girl's name is Kim Soon Min (or Lee Soon Min
So Shin and Min are siblings who have Soon as middle names to signify where they lie in their family tree. Their great great great great grandparents/uncles might have used Soon as their first name or middle name. But since my fanfic takes place in the late 1880's, the time after many Koreans began adopting last names (since previously only the nobles had last names), I'm not sure that'll apply to my characters.
If I'm wrong about the name system (or other information), PLEASE CORRECT ME! This was confusing. Also if anyone has more information on Korean culture or history (or is Korean), talk with me! T.T Teach me, I'm all ears!
Yes, I'm fascinated with Korean history and culture. To be honest, while reading about their history in connection with Japan and other countries, I was reminded of the Mexican/American experience with immigration, culture and discrimination. This obviously will come up in my fanfic. I only hope to be accurate with all issues that occured (and still occurs today tho on a lesser level) in Japan. However, I will make some exceptions mostly so I don't offend anyone Korean or Japanese, nor my readers and RK fans. Tis a touchy issue, and perhaps the fact that I'm niether Korean or Japanese may help and not help me to depict this issue. btw, my research includes books mostly written by American/English sociologists, historians and anthropologists.
As for my characters, they do have a background and point to them. But that will be for another day. First, I need to continue my research. ^^
