Description
*dies* God, I hate my internet. This is the third time I've attempted to submit this pic, but everytime I tried to the window gets hijacked and freezes.I present to you a character from 's fanfic, Crimson Destiny, Red Soul : Tomoe Takatsuki. Her late mother was Toki Takatsuki and Tomoe, sadly does not know who her father is (but RK fans probably can guess who he is). Toki, btw, is the lovely younger kind sister of Gentatsu Takatsuki, the bishi funky-hair styled manslayer who's killed by Hitokiri Battousai in the Samurai X movie.
Ah...so that's why T-dono styled Tomoe's hair like that. She's like her uncle, in hairstyle and fighting skills. Ohhh!
Anyhoo...
This Tomoe's beautiful like her aunt, but soo different otherwise. One, she's a fighter/priestess from the Hoseki Shrine in Kyoto (fictional shrine people! ). So there will be no pathetic attempts at stabbing on her part. She can kick your ass. Two, she's not exactly...a proper lady like her aunt...oh heck, she's got some wierd quirks that I know are gonna freak her father out when he finally meets her (he is, isn't he, T-dono? ) O_o;
Tomoe Takatsuki or Takatsuki-kun as Tsutomo Fugita so lovingly nicknamed her (squee! my inner fangirl is hoping they end up together, but my sanegirl says it's too early to tell for sure, so that's okay if they don't) is cool in my book for several reasons. She's a fighter who kicks ass, she's a shinto type priestess, she can argue with Tsutomo without backing down, she teases Shen Wang and Chizuru relentlessly
ON THE PIC ITSELF
Squee, I was able to finish this pic rather quickly. I started on Friday and finished on Sunday morning, and that's cuz I had guests and places to go to. Friday I went online looking for Japanese fabric designs and found about 25 patterns that I liked. I ended up using five for Takatsuki's outfit here. I was going to make a simple kimono but then I used that pattern for her obi and just fell in love with it and went nuts trying to make the kimono look cool. I'm pretty happy with the bicolor obi tie I made, I had wanted it to look sorta exotic and less formal. I suppose she looks like a geisha now, but she's not, especially since she doesn't have the geisha makeup or whatever. But I like it enough. ^^
Let it be known that JB cannot color black eyes. I just can't. They look boring to me. Same thing with hair, thus why Takatsuki's hair is indigo. Tis my best impression of black hair. I can't help it, highlights won't let me. They OWN ME! I also took S-girl's advice and drew a shrine gate thing (forget what's called) in the background. The moon was accidental, and if I'd known I'd make a moon, I would've made it less HUGE. The butterflies, completely random but mystifying enough to fit the pic.
Hope you guys like, even if I took a shortcut method with this pic. Don't worry, someday I'll get the hang of them Japanese design patterns. At least I hope...eh, Enjoy! :3

How do you use a pre-existing pattern for the kimono? Is there some tutorial you could direct me to?

jbramx2 In reply to WhiteRabbit5 [2006-12-01 09:33:16 +0000 UTC]
*scratchign head* Well it depends on the program you're using? Do you have photoshop? If so, use layers, and copy and paste the pattern on a "MULTIPLY" layer seperate from the layer that has the lineart. That way it'll show under the lineart and you can guide it and cut out or stretch pieces to make it fit the kimono. (that's what i did on here with her obi belt).

thank you! I tried to do it using a displacement map...did not work quite so good. I'm going to keep playing around with patterns.

Gorgeous. There are no other words to describe this! I like the very self-assured but cute expression she's got...with her hand on her hip like that too. And the kimono is absolutely beautiful (I know you didn't draw the pattern, but still!) So rich and vibrant. I really like the tilt of her eyes...can't get over that. Makes her look really exotic and sexy.
I actually like the moon! Very good emphasis. And the butterflies are pretty!

She's a little gem herself. ^__^ What a darling picture. Lol. Love the moon!! She's got an airbrushed looking face, really draws attention to her! As for the black eyes, howabout adding subtle greys and *dark* browns instead of dark indigo and navy? Aw, you do whatever... I shouldn't nitpick! ^__^ And what a fancy Kimono! Looks great with her hair.
Great job!

Whoo! I'm the biggest RahXephon fan to have never seen the tv show, movie, etc.
The only thing that I own are manga, the RahXephon Bible (which is a summary of everything to do with it), and I downloaded the opening song "Hemisphere". Isn't that sad?
Well, actually I'm filling in myself on the basic story line with the manga (that oddly enough came AFTER the tv series was made) because its cheaper than buying DVD's, and then I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a dvd of the movie. ^__^ Its kinda like Escaflowne the Movie was, the same.... but different than the series, you know? And, both of those are polar different than the manga. Seriously. LOL
I have heard that the movie explains a lot of things that where left out... s'posed to be good, from what I hear.

Oooooooooohhhhhhh...
Pretty!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow... I'd love to have such talent...
It's so wonderful, the skin tones the perfect coloring of the silk (wahhhhh... I want to leant to do that!), the hair, the background...
The detail of the torii (the temple gate) is really nifty.
For a beginnier like me, this beauty is at one time inspiring, yet daunting. I kno that I will never be able to do such a wonderful work (I have been trying to color my first lineart, and it's a nightmare... maybe it's like they say, perro viejo no aprende trucos nuevos.)
Ah, I see your point, Tanuki-dono fic is VERY inspiring. I'd only wish the updates didn't take so long

Squee! You read T-dono's fanfic too!? Yay! *nod nod* well true, updates take a while, but it only means she's not typing up nonsense.
She writes well!
Anyhow, Thank you so much! I'm thrilled you like this pic. yay! oh, well for the kimono I used patterns from photos of fabric that I found online.
So I just did a lot of copy and paste and editing and adjusting and filling in color and worked with different kinds of layers. @_@; It took me a while. But certainly cut down my time if I had done it the traditional way. ooh! I didn't know you also did pictures! :-D If you want help on photoshop with coloring linearts, please let me know, I'll be very happy to help you.

Oh, yes, I do! You know, good fics are fe, and when I find one, I just jump on it. T-dono's enter in such category...
Oh, I'd be very, very grateful if you can give me some pointers for the coloring. I'm using layers too, incluing one for lights (in screen blending mode) and one for shadows (in multiply mode), but I'm totally without a clue determining where the shadows and lights should go (well, I have zero experience in drawing, and my art classes in school happened in the prehistoric times). Hair is a nightmare as much as skin. I'll upload the colored version of my artline (though it's NOT finished) so you can see how it's going and if you want, tell me where are the errors, ad how to correct them.
Thank you very much in advance :: hug::

First off, your rant confused me.
Second off, *starts hyperventalating* this is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Just... just... dang. Everything is beautiful. The hair, the kimono, the moon (though it is a bit big) the gate thingy... I even love the bushes! I really want that kimono... where did you learn how to shade silk? I swear, for a second I wondered if you somehow took a picture of someone in kimono, then copied it onto this... but then I realized I was underestimating you, and I felt stupid.
Two small nit-picks; first, the moon. Granted the moon is floating farther away as time goes by and since the story is a while back, but still. It emphasizes Takatsuki's beauty, but it's just a little too big; and her eyes. They're lovely, it's just the angle at which her eyes meet her hait... it seems a little off-balance to me. Er... it's hard to explain. Probably just me though.
None the less, this is nothing short of the amazing quality your work turns out to be. Bravo.

lol! I'm ranting that everytime I'm about to submit a picture, my internet crashes and I lose everything I write and I don't submit the picture to Deviantart and I end up having to go through the submission process all over again. It's a drag, losing what took you 20 minutes to write.
Calm down! NO need to lose air for this! lol! Thank you so much, I'm happy you like it. Nope, I didn't take or use a photo of one kimono to do this. What I did is went on google and searched for "Japanese design patterns". I came up with some Kimono websites or websites that sell fabric. I browsed through them and rightclicked saved photos of Japanese fabrics that had designs I liked. Then with Photoshop I made patterns and brushes from the fabric photos. It's hard to use patterns that are on a photograph of a kimono, since they tend to be too small for use and with the 3-d effect of a photo, there will be highlights and shadows that won't work well in photoshop.
As stated in description, I cut and pasted and used those patterns or parts of the five patterns to fill in my lineart of Takatsuki's kimono. So in a way I cheated, but it did take me a long time and I did in the end choose which patterns went well where and next to what and with which colors. Originally her kimono was lavender with those red and purple flowers. But it didn't look good, so I changed it to dark red, then to this red and colored the highlights and shadows. The clothes tucked into her obi belt were dark blue and purple (or white) but I didn't like it so I changed it to gold and white. Seemed too dull, so I put a faded fabric pattern to it. And now this the result.
Eh, if I had done everything myself, I'd never have gotten this picture done.
lol, yeah I also agree that the moon is too big for my taste, tho not incorrect either. What could be incorrect is the lighting on her. Right now it looks as tho one has focused their camara at the moon, letting it take up the majority of the frame, when Tomoe suddenly steps in up close in front of you, almost taking up the majority of the frame herself. Heh, heh, sounds like her too.
As for her bangs, twas my imitation of Tomoe's bangs (funky bangs Watsuki gave her). They come down in a V on her face. Really strange. Enishi has them too, except since his hair's white, it doesn't stand out as much.
Naw I tried to make them less thick than Watsuki's Tomoe's bangs. They're more sparsed and separated.
Phew! finally done with comment! lol! Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment girl!

...she has Tomoe's absolute PRETTY-NESS with some added SPUNK.
lol! Yeah, you're right, she is like that. And now that I think of it, red is a good color for her. At first the kimono was lavender (very pale purple) and I remember briefly thinking that, woah...if it were paler, she'd look like she's wearing her aunt's white kimono.
Creepy. From there I decided to be more daring and make it dark red, but then toned it down to the deep red she's got now. If Tomoe was the quiet lady like cold beauty, Takatsuki's the total opposite, naughty, cross-dressing, fiery passionate beauty.
Squee! Thank you so much Pennies!

WOW!!! Jb - you outdid yourself! This is absolutly utterly amazing!!!!
The colouring is SO beautiful!!! and her kimono has so much detail too it! how do you find the patience!?
I love how you always draw characters of people stories too. That just makes it even more special!!!
But...WOW just...WOW. This is so beautiful! The BG is so amazing too! awesome job JB!!!!
The only thing is(and i hope you don't mind)...it looks like on her the light is coming from ahead of her. But..the big moon is at the back. Is there a light in front of her illumination her as well?
But anyways - GREAT JOB!!!
π: 0 β©: 1
jbramx2 In reply to Maria-Minamino [2005-01-27 06:22:55 +0000 UTC]
Thank you Maria! :3 I'm happy you like it! Well, I didn't draw out the patterns myself.
I did a lot of copying and pasting and adjusting to have them fit together in her kimono. *scratching head* The only thing I can be credited on the kimono is her obi tie, and for putting everything together. I had no model or example to look at. Just took whatever looked good together. *JB kept changing colors and patterns on the kimono till it had this final look*
Originally the kimono was going to be a light lavender with those red and purple flowers. But then I realized that dark red would look good, but then that seemed too dark and I couldn't decide on the colors for the clothes tucked into the obi. So I changed the kimono to red like the flowers. The obi clothes were dark blue and purple or dark blue and white, but I hated the blue and changed it to gold and white. So yeah, the kimono took me some time, but if I had come up and then drawn the patterns myself, I'd never get it done, I'm afraid.
Yay! Yeah I always like narrative type pictures. Or at least to make a story of those pictures. But mostly I like making pictures of my fave characters. Especially those who rarely get drawn.
lol, yup, I stated up in the description that the light sources are screwed. She could simply be standing in a well lighted balcony or entryway with the big moon in the back. Tho even then I find dificulty believing in that. Also, the background came after I had finished coloring her. I had no real plan for her as I was coloring her. But I wasn't planning on a moon really, that came out accidently. That circle was originally going to be a window, but I found it boring and suddenly ended up with a big white circle and was like...ooh! moon! Same thing happened with the glowing white butterflies. Ooh! Butterfly brush! Mystical and random! Me like.
But thanks Maria! I really appreciate the thoughtful comments.
