Description
My Korean original characters done on Open Canvas. Not my first Open Canvas pic, but the best one so far.
I'm not that happy with my coloring job, but the open canvas I have isn't giving me a lot of tools or options so this is the result. Dunno if I like Open Canvas or not. I do like the fact that I can actually draw with my table on here without my lines looking pixelly. My OC drawings have a sorta pencil drawing look to them. Tis pretty, I think. The coloring here tho, not too good, I'm afraid. But I really wanted to color them, since I already drew them in pencil various times in my notebooks. Hm, will have to attempt coloring them again.
They're Korean siblings that show up in my Rurouni Kenshin Post-Jinchu fanfic alongside Misao. As to why I decided to make them Korean...I can't really remember that well (tis been almost a year since I began thinking up my story). All I remember thinking was to make these characters as beautiful as possible (so I guess being from a different country adds to their exotism, besides Enishi provides the Chinese influence in the story). So although this picture doesn't do them justice, they are supposed to be very lovely. Going with standards from that time (or even today?) in Japan, the girl has really white skin, really black eyes and shiny inky black hair. (but since coloring black hair is hard for me, I gave her hair a purple-indigo tint).
As for the guy...my original intent was to make him look like a younger prettier/gentler version of Aoshi Shinomori. Yes, there will be a reason to it.
When I was plotting my fanfic, his character kept changing the most. Originally, he simply looked like a young Aoshi with high long ponytail included, but since I wanted to make him Korean, he ended up with a braid (copying Korean hairstyles before they were westernized). The second time I drew him, his bangs came out super long and parted on the side instead of the middle, hiding his right eye. Over several drawings, he's became prettier and suddenly familiar to me. I realized he looked like Ken Ichijouji from Digimon! Okay, not really, but the way I draw Ken is more realistic and pretty (and older) then the anime's skinny overly-simplistic style. So I had to re-examine him again before I turned him into Ken. XD;;
I did some online research on Korean names and found an article written by a Korean American. Not positive but for now the guy is either Kim Soon Shin (with Shin as first name) or Lee Soon Shin (which is easier to mouth than Kim Soon Shin I think XD). For now the girl's name is Kim Soon Min (or Lee Soon Min
So Shin and Min are siblings who have Soon as middle names to signify where they lie in their family tree. Their great great great great grandparents/uncles might have used Soon as their first name or middle name. But since my fanfic takes place in the late 1880's, the time after many Koreans began adopting last names (since previously only the nobles had last names), I'm not sure that'll apply to my characters.
If I'm wrong about the name system (or other information), PLEASE CORRECT ME! This was confusing. Also if anyone has more information on Korean culture or history (or is Korean), talk with me! T.T Teach me, I'm all ears!
Yes, I'm fascinated with Korean history and culture. To be honest, while reading about their history in connection with Japan and other countries, I was reminded of the Mexican/American experience with immigration, culture and discrimination. This obviously will come up in my fanfic. I only hope to be accurate with all issues that occured (and still occurs today tho on a lesser level) in Japan. However, I will make some exceptions mostly so I don't offend anyone Korean or Japanese, nor my readers and RK fans. Tis a touchy issue, and perhaps the fact that I'm niether Korean or Japanese may help and not help me to depict this issue. btw, my research includes books mostly written by American/English sociologists, historians and anthropologists.
As for my characters, they do have a background and point to them. But that will be for another day. First, I need to continue my research. ^^

Also, one note about korean names--The first syllable is their family name, and the middle and last syllable are parts of ther first name. I'm half-Korean --my mother's name is Taeyeon, or Tae Yeon, or Tae-Yeon. Either way, the last two syllables together form the chosen name. So your characters would be named SoonShin and SoonMin. Or Soonshin/Soonmin. Or Soon Shin/Soon Min. Or Soon-Shin/Soon-Min. Whichever way you prefer. Ther are no middle names in Korean, just family names and given names.
If you have any other questions about the way we count our age, the reason hanbok look the way they are, or how to read/write hangul, just send me a note!!

Nice work!
Your work gave me pride in my own race( i'm korean)
Lee Soon Shin is actually a name of Korean Naval commander in Choseon dynasty, who defeated 133 Japanese Battle cruisers with only 12 ships.
If you want more informations, you might want to look up
"Immortal Lee Soon Shin"
or
"The Song of the Sword"

lol i'm korean
wow, you researched ALOT
in fact, why park, lee, and kim is popular is because the kings in korea had those last names.
so people with park, lee, or kim is related to royalty.
but other last names like Jung, Hong, Joo, Shin etc. are different and also is very unique in a way
also, you are correct on the thing w/ people with the same last names can't marry because people back then had different last names so they thought you would be related and wouldn't want their offsprings to get retarded and stuff :]
if you have any questions just message me~
i'll just ask my parents XD they know practically everything --;
but other than that, OMG YOU HAVE AWESOME DRAWING SKILLZ
so pretty~ although most of the guys in korea back then wouldn't have bangs or they would be thought as savages i think....
anywayz, PRETTY <33

Ya, THAT'S my normal email address. (Thought the aim thing was weird.)
In that case...
OH, I DO HAVE IT! *Tottaly never noticed it somehow*
Can't listen to it now though, on a library computer. (Since my internet is COMPLETLY not working anymore....) I'll download it if it ever works.
In other news my school is hitting national news for being hicks and my parents will along with it.
You know the Intelligent Design thing in Pennsalvania?
Ya, my school's having a ID class also...
And there be a lawsuit...
And both my parents be one of the eight people who are signed up for the petition.
HAHA, WE'RE FAMOUS FOR BEING HICKS! HA!
The best thing of all is my mom doesn't have an email address (do the fact she is COMPLETLY technology intollerent, she's convinced all computers are against her) and whenever she needs one she just says mine anyway.
So all the stuff about it is being sent to MY email address.
And I can read it all (I have permission anyway).
IT IS SO COOL. ('Cept we can never check it due to the fact the interent literally is-not- working at all, the cable at that either. So it's sorta impratical.)
On another note my dad went to Las Vegas last weekend (As expected he hated it, but that's expected of him, he more of a run-away-into-the-wilderness-and-backpack-person) and I kept thinking "Grr, if I went I would so ranomdly show up at her casino (that's where you work if my memory serves me right, right?) and go like "HIII!")
I have a friend anyway who has pledged to take me to Las Vegas when she becomes 16 so I'll bug you then, lol.
Wow, tottaly forgot this was an ART thread and not an email or something, dammit.... sorry people! ... Ahh, I wrote too much. But from now on I won't spam up your poor thread.
I'll spam up your poor email! (Or something...)
Ya, ja.

And ya, I heard it. It's beautiful. Listened to it over and over, it fits me so well, it's disturbing...
On another note, I've been wiating for you to come on AIM or something about the betaing but that obvioullsy isn't happening so should I just send you back the files through email once I've beta-ted them? *Not that there's really anything to FIX and I made up a word...*

Fairytwister [2004-11-15 02:35:41 +0000 UTC]
Hi!
Well I'm Korean, so you can prod me all ya want with questions.
In terms of names... often the middle or last part are shared within a generation.
So siblings and cousins have the same middle or last part, usually.
*However* this could also vary by gender. It of course is up to the grandfather who picks the generational name.
e.g., My dad's sibs = got all the same last part except for his sister.
My generation = all girls and boys got the same first part of the two part name.
Also Koreans don't think of our names as Last, First Middle but really Last and First-Middle. Meaning a person's name isn't Soon or Shin, but Soon-shin and Soon-min.
The costumes are pretty good... the man's vest usually has a little bit more of a flare to it, and the hair actually is usually not so loose on either ... but it still looks Korean to me ^_^

jbramx2 In reply to Fairytwister [2004-11-16 03:59:19 +0000 UTC]
S-girl! Squee! I thought you might be when you once mentioned researching Korean costumes (it is hard to find pics of clothing that were worn by men). Yay! Thank you for commenting!
Yes, I wasn't certain about siblings sharing the generation name, and I'm still a little confused by how the name thing is organized within a family, but you did clear some stuff for me! Thank you! Okies, so my characters' name should be Soon-Shin and Soon-Min, not just Shin or Min? Or more exactly, Min should have a different middle? (Or a different first?
) Hm, eh well,
whatever comes out of this, I get the feeling I know what to pick out as their Japanese aliases: Shin and Mina. X3; Seems to be the easiest part so far.... XD;;
"The costumes are pretty good... the man's vest usually has a little bit more of a flare to it..."
Ooh! flare? Do you mean the flare from the diaphram area and below? I came across several different designs, and I noticed the sorta bell-shaped cut of the costumes. This outfit on him is mostly meant to be conventional (cuz he's a warrior more than a scholar or farmer), hence the belt tied around his waist. Hm, now looking at it, it looks more Chinese inspired with the exception that the collar is a Korean collar (from the profile this can't be seen). *scratches head* Okies, I'll see what I can do about it. Thanks for pointing it out. AH yes you're right, the hair is combed back tight against the head. But cuz I wanted to make him total bishounen, I let him have pretty bangs, but more importantly, I wanted him to look similar to Aoshi.
There will be a reason to this.
Thank you sooo much for helping me out! I'm so honored! I really appreciate all the help I can get. If you have any suggestions for me, please let me know!
Thank you!!
