Description This is a commission for ; it's similar to his previous commissions, larger, of course...because it pays tribute to Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie, the ill-fated 1996 feature film version of everyone's favorite sarcastic puppet show!

In case you haven't seen it (and since it only played in about 66 theaters nationwide, I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't), it's basically MST3K with a bigger budget, only with fewer obscure references and a meager 74-minute running time, thank you very much, Universal Studios. The film that they tear apart (quite literally, at one point) is 1955's This Island Earth, a potboiler of a sci-fi yawner that wants so hard to be The Day The Earth Stood Still but doesn't quite have the cojones. But it does have a big-brained slacks-wearing monster, a far distant world made out of matte paintings ("They're very into Yes on this planet"), and a baritone-voiced lunkhead of a hero who learns nothing from his trip across the cosmos. All I learned from this movie is to never unplug my interocitor without properly powering it down first. And that steel waffles are flammable and should be handled with the utmost care.

Came out the same year, though Seems like everyone was obsessed with aliens in 1996. Between Mars Attacks and Independence Day and Space Jam and 3rd Rock from the Sun and Dennis Rodman, it was pretty much a full-scale invasion.

A lot of diehard sci-fi geeks were mad when MST3K chose to riff this movie;having seen it several times,in my opinion,it's not that great...and I'm comparing it to other sci-fi films of the time, like "War Of The Worlds","Forbidden Planet","Invaders From Mars" and so on.
It was a great idea for a plot, but the entire revelation about Metaluna and its fate don't come until the end of the film, there's no backstory about WHY Metaluna and Zaygon are at war,the "mute-ant",prominently featured in all the ads,is little more than a clumsy plot device, and they're on Metaluna for...what?...twenty minutes?...before they have to leave to escape the destruction!
In fact, there's a scene which, amazingly, wasn't in the MST3K version where Exeter is taking Cal and Ruth on a travel-cart tour of Metaluna, pointing off-camera and describing the ruins of the once-great civilization...Uh,hello?Remember us...the AUDIENCE?!Don't WE get to see it?!
And,as much as love MST3K,the movie sold them a little short...it didn't HAVE to be only 74 minutes long. They could've shown "This Island Earth" in its entirety. If that's still not long enough, they could've had a short beforehand...preferably some color thing from the 1950s/60s,where they use some weird-ass fantasy premise to sell something...think "Mr. B Natural","Once Upon A Honeymoon","Out Of This World",etc.

And on a personal note,it was a little jarring hearing them use the word "sh-t" several times.I mean,c'mon guys!!!You're MST3K!!You don't need to stoop to that level of humor!Leave that to the Wayans, the Farrellys, the Freidberg and Seltzers, the (insert name of SNL veteran of the last two decades attempting a movie career)...the ones so comically stunted that they NEED that sort of fallback!!!

(maybe that's just my opinion)Β  Β

It did feel a bit gratuitous, but I think that the two uses of the "shit" to get a PG-13 rating were at the best possible places they could put them.

Doesn't the fact that it's Universal MAKE it international?

MST3K the movie was a good one. I liked the host segments and it was funny that Mike managed to destroy the Hubble lol. One thing I can't stand though is how some people complain that This Island Earth didn't deserve the MST3K treatment. While the movie wasn't as good as the TV show the movie that was featured lent itself well to being riffed on.

As far as the artwork goes I liked your style. Just as a suggestion it would be cool if you added some speech bubbles.
