Here we have the third and final commission that Wushi W0lf took out from me. This is for another friend of his named Rose. If you guys hadn't already seen some of the other commishes that this guy has taken out, you should. He spent a good amount of money for his friends to get these pieces. He's a pretty amazing guy and I am doing a little networking for him here on dA. If you guys would like to help a genuinely awesome guy get to work in the career of his dreams, head over to my gallery and look for an Adam Jensen piece. All the info you will need is there. Lets see how much we can help him. He's good people.Anywho, yep its Gambit. The resident stubble faced X-man. I had a lot of fun with piece, and I put a little bit of extra oomph into it. I got permission to post it so, here you guys go!

I get that alot. "You look like David Finch". And I guess that I see it, but the thing is, I really don't follow his stuff. He's a tremendous artist, don't get me wrong, and when people say that my stuff looks like his, I take it as a huge compliment. Its just funny because I rarely buy his books! HA!

I understand man, I have pass by the same thing. In college, people came to me saying that my work was under Glenn Fabry's influence, but at the time I didn't have any connection with his work. But when I saw, then I understand their point and it was cool. And after this, he was a great influence for me. It's weird, but it works. And if you're cool with, it's all that matters!

I see. Yeah, I can see a bit of Glenn in there. The thing for me is that tricky thing that comes along with being an artist in comics. On one hand your being set in the company of a giant in Mr. Fabry, but on the other hand we all want to make a name of our own and not feel as if we are under another's shadow. You know what I mean? That's one reason why I have strayed away from mentioning past artists influences in my contemporaries works. Not that there is anything wrong with saying that you see amazing artists from the past in a newer artists stuff, nothing wrong with that at all. I have just been on the wrong end of that conversation and had some artist rip into me, you know? Some people get really upset and feel like they will always be under another artists shadow. I personally can see their point, I like Mr. Finch ( and that's not because you brought him up, I really do get that a lot. People tell me I have a Finchian quality. They actually made up a word to describe the man's influence, thats unreal.) and that's some pretty steep company to be put in, but I don't want to be 'the next Finch', you know what I mean? I want to be me. So its tricky, do you get angry at someone saying that your still overshadowed by a popular artist, or do you accept it and see it as a great compliment, or do you just keep doing your thing and not really feel either way about it? I tend to see it as a compliment. But I can understand the other side of the conversation, you know?
The funny thing is that I don't even know what Mr. Finch's influences are, but I can tell you mine. One of my most beloved artists in Albrecht Durer. Specifically, his engravings created for Dante's Inferno. One of my favorite stories and probably one of my biggest artistic influences. Durer and Van Gogh. Seriously, those two artists more than any other are my biggest influences. As far as the art side of comics goes. Just the technique, just the visual style, is all I am speaking of. Look up Durer's Inferno engravings and note that his line work is so crisp and just gorgeous. He describes the surface of the form in order to describe the form itself. Its as if he put a wire mesh, like those found in computer generated characters, and laid it over the surface of the subject of his engravings. Its so descriptive and beautiful. And its incredibly unforgiving, if you don't understand the form how can you accurately describe its surface? You can try, but if you really don't understand whats going on inside the form of say the biceps, how can you imply whats going on? You have to have a serious grasp of the function and shape of the form in order to imply that knowledge. And Durer was a true master. Van Gogh was as well, but that's another discussion all together.
If your curious, which you probably aren't, the guys I am reading nowadays are Sean Gordon Murphy, Ryan Ottely, and Olivier Coipel. They are my favorite artists right now for a lot of different reasons. If you haven't checked them out, you need to do so! You won't regret it. I know that they are fairly popular artists and that you probably already have heard of them and seen a lot of their works, but you'd be surprised how many people haven't. So this is a 'just in case' kind of deal.

Unbelievable! Seriously, I've always loved Gambit, ever since the 90's X-Men animated show when I was a kid. He was my favorite character back then, and he's still right up there now. I've only recently gotten into inking, and I'll definitely practice on some simpler stuff first, but any chance I could ink this and post here for critique? You'll be messaged and linked back to when I do, of course. This is just such an amazing rendition of Gambit, I really want to ink it at some point, but I don't want to over step any bounds since this was your commission and all.
Anyway, killer job, keep it up!

lol, no you didn't but it's cool. I ended up taking the summer off (first time in 8 years) before my senior year at UNCSA and spent the whole time at my parent's place out of state, with no internet, so I wouldn't have been able to do anything about it anyway.

I do. Its yet another title that I never really liked the stories written up, until Annihilation. That was a sweet Nova story. But for the most part, the stories never did it for me. But as far as the character goes, yeah man I love Nova. Such a cool look, a very distinctive design and his police man attitude has always been appealing to me. My dad was a police officer most of my growing up, so I can totally relate to him as a guy.

I looked it up and found a crap load of images for the poster you were talking about, unfortunately I couldn't find out how big the original art was. UNTIL I came across the website that the artist Ivan Reis, uses to sell his original art. And there it was! He used two boards to create that image, which makes sense. If the original art isn't pretty big, when you go to blow it up into a poster sized final image, it will look really shitty. So it makes sense that he used two boards.
I tell you what, when you hit me up with the commissions that you and your peeps are looking for, tell me about this one as well. I will tackle the whole list all at once!
