cool....now do 50 more.
yeah I think there are some nice parts...you just have to do more and more (maybe keep them simple) but solid...just pound through as many as you can stand....don't overwhelm yourself..but don't be a pussy either....again less detail more solid...it makes it easier at this point.
It's hard and a lot of drawings won't work...but you'll never get to the great ones without the experience of the bad ones...for me what I've found doing all the reps...is I feel like "ok I've fought this war before" "I've dealt with this angle"
it really does help.
yeah maybe I've done 20 or 30 that were wonky...but each time I circle back around I know the "danger" areas" so I pay more attention or I maybe have dealt with something similar on another body part or pose.
everything can't be so precious when you are learning...you have to get a little dirty...it doesn't mean you are a shitty artist...you are just working through what EVERYONE has to do.
just some people are afraid to show it.
hahahaha
you could always create a new deviant art page just for ground and pound stuff...that way you don't flood this one with studies(if that's a concern)...start a new one and just go "I started this to post all my studies shit or shine"
own it!
I figure anyone who "watches" Gotham-1 knows what I am about now...it's about me working and learning stuff...I will eventually switch on the lights and it will just be finished stuff (and I'll probably store all the studies) but I started the page with the intentions of "this is where I am at...(warts and all) and this is where I am headed."
it helped me get over this perfectionist mentality I had with my work.
give it a shot.
I wanted to document the entire process.

That show I can get too. I don't want to "give up" on a piece until it looks perfect to me.
A lot of what you say I can relate to.
Pretty much all of it.
I mean, do I pound out 50 of the female figure that are only 30 seconds each, which will most likely suck most of the time, or do I practice on a few models and try to get those lines right before moving on?
I guess I can do both. I never tried doing the shit you really do (Which shows I suppose) like multiple figure sketches.
Last night I was just amped for some reason, I started doing that piece and didn't sleep all night. I know it's not perfect yet but that was a great night for em last night, really inspired me and reminded me that I am at least good and I get a tremendous sense of pure happiness when I create art I enjoy and find pleasing to my eye. I was literally laughing while I was doing it lol.

well to be honest what I am doing isn't going to be right for everyone...I feel like I know a little of what I personally need but I also can see the value it might have for someone who is a little afraid to fail on a piece....or (and this isn't directed at you) but I've said before (to someone else I think)
when I see someone post a single figure (like a figure type study) and it's not so hot (one; I can relate to it) but I immediately think....why are you not doing more of this? One figure is not going to get you where you need to be....to really let it flow comes from a confidence and a familiarity with things that are at levels you're never going to get to being tentative about drawing.
or doing a small handful of tight drawings.
The thing I just heard that sticks with me is the gesture IS the drawing...you cannot put life into a bad gesture(as you work onto it)...yes you can put 120 hours and render the shit out of it, you can color it to kingdom come...but you can't pull around a lame drawing.
I see digital stuff here all the time that's at a pretty high level...but the draftsmanship of the piece itself is weak (or weaker than the drawing). But they keep posting these very time consuming paintings because it covers (in their mind) the flaws the drawing have.
here's the problem with that. Sometimes you have to go a few step backwards to take several steps forward...if you can't let your strengths occasionally drop to the back of your game and work on your weak spots...you are never going to improve past a certain point.
Your at a different spot because it's far earlier...but never be afraid to work on tough shit, and have it feel tough and actually not work out....
I joined here to not develop or play to any of my strengths. I took "time" away from myself. I've never posted anything that took over 20 minutes (on the igm-transformer) page there are a small handful of 20 minute pin-ups...and they suck pretty much.
If I spend 8-12 hours on something...trust me it's a very different story.
I would do some really complex pieces that took about 28 hours (for some reason they'd always hit at about that amount of time) and they'd work pretty well....that's not what I am here to celebrate...this is about getting in the trenches and getting dirty...fighting battles with no back-up. A tough art boot camp/
This is what I needed....but yeah man for you.
Dig in, figure out what you are all about, and then build yourself back up.
I can tell you really love art...so do yourself a huge favor and take FULL advantage of the opportunity you are getting with school....It's a big deal...and a great chance to learn a LOT.
a great artist will kick you in the teeth with their drawing chops, and then everything else (tools, programs, tricks, digital color, stats, etc. etc. etc.) is just the icing on the cake.

Yea totally, see another (one of the many) problem I have, even with my new piece, its still just a face "laying" there. I want to add action to it and dynamics, I need to work on that too. But how to do so with just a face besides expression? I figure I have to add.....a figure, the rest of the body, motion etc.....
I can't wait to see some of your further along pieces.

I think with faces and what I am finding with hands...is it's the exact same process(as with figures). You take these stiff weaker drawings and as the gesture gets better they become more believable and basically cooler.
If you look at it in 3 chunks and I think some art school at least make it two different classes is head drawing, and figures...to me hands should really have their own class too.
It's really a figure (maybe like a spider) that can do all these cool things on it's own.

yea thats exactly right, they can probly have more poses then a figure itself but with more appendages so it is even harder adn again, there has to be more poseability....? I dunno, Im probly crazy .

nah hands can be tough, there's some generic hand poses (just like figure poses)...but to really go beyond that and not be limited to say 3 main hand shots (the fist, the "grrr I am a bad ass monster" scary claw hand...and the spread out fingers casting a spell hand)
It's some work. It's worth it, I think in the long run because why be limited?...when you can nail the mechanics down, you can draw just about any hand pose you want (or at least work through any hand pose you might want) with some confidence.
or that's the hope.

I want to be able to draw any dynamic pose in any direction with extreme perspective, at will and with a badass style.
Then I will wake up lol.

it all builds on itself....you won't get there if you don't practice. Any pro athlete that does anything exceptional works on that "signature" move over and over...same goes for art. You might not see the work, just the results..
but if you want to draw bad ass figures....you better work on it every day.
