Description
A raw scan of the second page of issue one. I was so repelled by how I drew the girl in panel 1 that I redrew her as a giant face and stuck it on in photoshop. If you look closely you can also see that the punk kid in the foreground of panel 3 is a paste-up. I screwed him up the first time too. I wish I could say that didn't happen a lot, but there's plenty of evidence to the contrary. Fear of not getting it "right" the first time is so paralyzing as a newcomer. Somewhere along the way I decided to ditch that and do whatever it takes to be happy with the finished product. That includes paste-ups and LOTS of white out.*brush, micron, sponge

AWESOME!!! Miles just sent me some Dredd stuff you did. Is that for Fleet or IDW? Either way, it's greatness! He also told me about some Conan stuff you did! I'm so behind... I'll have to check that out. We should try something again. Maybe I can color up something for you and Ottley's blog. I'm doing his crystal walker thing. Well, eventually. HAHA! Be thinking about it. I would love a chance to rock your socks off!

Dude! That'd be great! Ryan and I are a bit behind on the blog right now, but next piece I do (that I don't want to color myself)I'd love to send it your way.
And I believe the Dredd story was for 2000AD.

I learned from Sean Murphy that one of the BEST ways to learn about creating comics is to actually look at artist's originals.
Stuff like this is more inspiring to me than a digitally retouched image. I love seeing the finger prints and smudges. I wish more people would post this kind of stuff. Cheers!

That's a REALLY good tip. One that I've hardly practiced myself. I didn't really study a lot of originals until maybe this past year or two. Something I have to pursue a bit more...
I kind of want me a Murphy original, now that you mention it.

A few years ago I went to a showing of Mike Richardson's original art collection, and it was a real education, seeing all the correction fluid and paste-ups and margin scribbles. There was an Al Williamson Star Wars page there that really captured my attention for a few minutes -- of course, that particular piece was immaculate.

Agreed. There's a two page spread from his American Vampire work that I'd kill for.
It's a very comforting feeling to see that EVERYONE fucks up there pages and does little fixes and white out corrections. You get so used to seeing these perfect looking pages in comics that look so pristine that when you fuck up it seems like the end of the world.

At the end of the day, it's whatever gets the job done. Really love all the expressions you're able to pull out of your character drawings.

thanks, Derek! That's what I tell myself. I'm hoping that some day i'll be blessed with the confidence or competence to get it right first.

do you smudge white ink to get that smokey effect in the second panel?

I believe it's a sponge and pro-white correction fluid.

I forgot to mention those! I took a few whacks at getting that guy's little face right. One of those was pasted on for the final. I forget which...
