Description
A raw scan of the second page of issue one. I was so repelled by how I drew the girl in panel 1 that I redrew her as a giant face and stuck it on in photoshop. If you look closely you can also see that the punk kid in the foreground of panel 3 is a paste-up. I screwed him up the first time too. I wish I could say that didn't happen a lot, but there's plenty of evidence to the contrary. Fear of not getting it "right" the first time is so paralyzing as a newcomer. Somewhere along the way I decided to ditch that and do whatever it takes to be happy with the finished product. That includes paste-ups and LOTS of white out.*brush, micron, sponge

lots of layers of sponged ink, correction fluid, and hatching.

man you are right about the fear thing. its paralyzing when you start working with some big place and you just want to get stuck on a page so you can make it right, and you get to a point where you just want to get through it but you cant, cause you have to get it right
amazing page by the way awesome composition. especially love those gritty backgrounds. the way you render them always gives the perfect sense of scale

I would really love to see more of these raw pages from you. I absolutely can't get enough. You have quickly become one of my favourite artists currently working in comics.

Awesome again! Gotta agree with Chris below, psyched seeing you do most of your fixes right on the page . Also reminds me a bit of Wally Woods originals for EC, how he would use various different papers and panel paste ups to get unique effects, and to disguise bungles and such. Thanks for sharing!

glad you dig it, dude! I just got the Mad Artist's edition and that was inspiring to see the amount of paste-ups and blunders those guys went through.

Just beautiful for the art as well as the message man. More of an issue that i see with our current age of digital medium (specifically Cintiq's) is that its becoming a lot more prevalent to pursue what i call "mistakelessness" and i had to recently break myself of it after using the Cintiq and digital medium in general a lot. Its great seeing someone that i consider a front running badass showing the process of dealing with mistakes and moving on. great stuff...sorry for the rant, lol.

glad you appreciate it, Chris. I don't want to be the guy on a soap box but an artist afraid of mistakes is like a sailor afraid of water. For me, drawing is how to make my mistakes look sexy.

This is GENIUS!
I love the pasted guy, my father does that all the time, his originals are totally Frankenstein-ish, with a lot of bits pasted and glued

Hey, I know that feel; Tippex is one of my best friends at the moment, although I've not yet had to resort to paste-overs, mainly because I'm too lazy.
Great work on this though, it works really well, and I actually think the girl in panel 01 is nicely drawn.

thanks, dude! I rarely use direct reference for characters or figures. But for backgrounds, vehicles, and props reference can be great!

after you did your retouches after scanning, do you save the page in greyscales or in 1bit with only white and black?
thanks for showing this wip!

When I started working as assistant, on the first day my boss showed me an original Toth page. Whiteout, morticed in patches, much evidence of mistakes and alterations.
It's interesting to see your process here. And again, a lovely first issue!
