Description
The duel between the dark lord Morgoth and Fingolfin.“Last of all is set the name of Melkor, He who arises in Might. But that name he has forfeited; and the Noldor, who among the Elves suffered most from his malice, will not utter it, and they name him Morgoth, the Dark Enemy of the World.”
— The Silmarillion, J.R.R. Tolkien

I wonder if Fingolfin could have won the fight if he had ditched his sword for a leather sling and a rounded stone...

Tolkien was a genius. But I haven't read the Silmarillion yet . this artwork is awesome it is so atmospheric and amazing I would put that on the cover of a movie or book this would have made Tolkien proud. btw im writing a book on this website Its probably going to sound like a Tolkien book.

Now i see why Sauron was so BIG in the game Lego The Lord of the Rings. He sure as hell wasn't that big in Shadow of Mordor.

Holy smokes. This image more than any other fully captures the immensity and sheer power Morgoth held over all mortals. Here, he makes Fingolfin look like a mouse.

I was writing about this two nights ago after too much wine. It all seemed amazing at the time, reading it back now it seems like I had a few good points and repeated them over and over in different ways. Still, an excellent picture, a little more focus on the geography of the area near Angband would have made it perfect.
Here's what I typed up:
The spikes on Morgoth's armour are pointing upwards showing his divine nature - he came from the heavens. But his pitted yellow eyes and resolute stance and hammer shfit his focus to the ground, to the realm of elves and men, to the changeable world. His hammer is Grond, the hammer of the underworld, and it burns with fire which is the element most quickly capable of physical change.
Fingolfin's weapon is also pointed towards the ground, defying Morgoth's claim over the earth. However, his hair, the same colour (and, by implication, nature) of his sword, is implying that he is the true subject/proprietor of the earth. It is his to exist in and rule as much as he can.
Two directions then for Morgoth, who defies his own nature by defying the will of Illuvatar.
One direction for Fingolfin, although who is outmatched, directs his force, his weapon, in the direction of his spirit, the made world.
Also important. Fingolfin's hair AND sword point in the exact same direction. His actions, even his defiance, spring from his following of his true nature. Morgoth's are the OPPOSITE and spring from his defiance. This is why he is considered ANTAGONIST. He is the one most defiant of his intended role, the one who seeks dominion over lands he has no claim over.
Fingolfin follows his nature.
Morgoth defies his.
Fingolfin's intention remains unbending even given the proximity of Grond and its change-inducing fire, given a greater impression of strength of Fongolfin's part, especially considering thir disproportionate sizes.
Met in valley - meeting inevitable.
