No problem. Any doubts, feel free to ask anything!

This was a tutorial for people that know how to draw, and want to draw in Photoshop. For a more basic tutorial, I made this: [link]

Cool! but I find it easier to do line art and detail on paper then trace over it.

Quick question. How do you lower line quality?

What do you mean lower line quality?

Making the lines lighter or darker

JoaoRodrigoBaptista In reply to Amtyk [2008-06-13 17:06:25 +0000 UTC]

AHHHH!!! Line weight!

The best way to make lines lighter or darker, is to change the brushe's size. I use darker and heavier lines for what I call the "Contour Lines", i.e., the lines that define the edges of the character. For lighter lines, lower the size of the brush.

Of course, you can always fool around with the brushe's opacity, but I rarely do that. The less changes I do during the procedure, the less prone I am to making mistakes, like using a wrong brush for a certain part of the drawing.

Just need to practice! I actually don't do as much steps as I mentioned here anymore, since I'm more at ease. This is really begginner's level.

Useful thing - even if you are traditional artist Really nice work! I usually work without lineart and I do all the details at basic sketch - it makes my works unclear (sometimes). Still - my best work was done with use of lineart so... I think it will help me a little :]

Cool, but I don't have any of those things...

JoaoRodrigoBaptista In reply to Zeldalina [2008-06-08 17:50:07 +0000 UTC]

Even if you don't work digitally, you can apply some of the basic principles to your pencil drawings.

For instance, my traditional drawing tend to be very sketchy looky, because I use "layers" of sketches while drawing. Start with light sketches, and then develop a heavier line for the final lines.

Very informative.
Just a couple of nice hints to other photoshop users...
Some quick hotkeys: Free transform... Ctrl+T, Step Backwards (undo) Ctrl+Alt+Z - Those are the most frequent I use. If you have a tablet with customisable buttons its good to bind these.
Also - Use the brush dynamics menu to control the look of your brushes.. for example, for an authentic pencil look and good crisp lines make sure the pressure on your pen is set to control the shape dynamics. Its all a matter of syle and preference tho.

Very good tutorial, answers alot of the questions I used to ask.

Thankyou

Also with the tips: for those of you with WACOM, I find it best to stroke in the most comfortable way possible. Therefore, I've made a hotkey for horizontal mirror and bound it to the tablet. Also, if you move up to CS4, there is a rotate canvas option by pushing R to rotate the canvas around to get some more comfortable drawing areas. All you have to do is hit Esc to set the canvas back to normal too.
