I dont draw digitally. I use red or blue pencils for my sketches and than I ink or pencil it. I just use photoshop to color my traditional drawings.
I think I would use Photoshop for linework if I had a Ciniq.
But I wanted to thank you for this great tutorial. It is written very understandable and it is informative. There is much work in it. Good job. Thank you.

Thank YOU!
This is actually a bit old, and I do things a bit differently now. But it still is a useful tutorial, I think.

I have some questions. I personally never used a tablet (but soon i'm gonna buy one) so i just wanted to know how you can paint with a tablet? How you navigate to draw precize lines? Does the tablet shows the drawing in progress in its screen so you know where to place the pencil? Or you just need to use your intuit and while you draw on tablet watch the PC screen?

JoaoRodrigoBaptista In reply to Gejsi [2010-02-19 17:06:03 +0000 UTC]
Depends on the tablet.
I have a Wacom Cintiq, which is basically a screen where you can draw on. Like a piece of paper, except it's a screen. So you see your hand and draw like you normally would.
Most tablets don't have a screen. So you'll have to pay attention to the screen. It takes a while to get used to looking at something other than your hand, when you're drawing, but eventually you'll get there.
You don't need your intuition for that. You see the brush on the screen, so you always know where you are.

Thank you my friend.
I'm one of those who still are traditional painters and never used tech to do that. But this week I will order a Wacom tablet large dimension. Hope it would be a great experience.

How's that tablet working for you?

Is working great and i am also getting used to it.
Here is one of my works with it [link]
I found easier for me to use Corel Painter rather than Photoshop to do my works, but i use also Photoshop for final touches.

Hey don't worry about it... you use a mouse on your computer right?
try using the pen of the tablet as a mouse at first, so you get used to moving your hand with the pen and following the arrow with your eyes.
You'll get used to it ^^ I promise. And just practice; remember every line you draw will make you improve.

You are right.. I have already more than 1 week that i am using the tablet and my hand is really improving.I have still to improve but now its easier for me. Doing a lot of sketches helped me to train my hand well in tablet. Thanks my friend for suggestion (:

Apply a Levels adjustment layer in Photoshop, until the lineart is dark and crisp enough.

Good tut for tablet users.
I guess I disagree with having to have a tablet. I don't have one, and while I don't do much line art; I have done line art before. It's MUCH MUCH easier with a tablet I assume, but it is possible to draw the lines with the pen tool - it takes alot longer and you need to know your brush effects as well as the pen tool itself really well, but you can do it. It also helps to sketch the drawing out first then scan into photoshop to do the line art with a mouse, but that's obvious hehe.
Anyways, good tut - great job!

Well, Adam Hughes does all his Photoshop work with a mouse, but I think he only colors. Nevertheless, I could never do that, it'd really freak me out.
But I knew it was possible.
Sorry for the late reply.

WOW! This is a great tutorial. I just got a tablet for Christmas and I have been trying to figure out what way is the right way for me to do lineart. I was like you, I have been doing my lineart with fireworks (a vector program) for years but my tablet isn't compatible with the program so I was kind of thrown into the world of Photoshop pretty quickly. The information provided in your tutorial was invaluable to me, its interesting how simple something really is once you see it done by someone else, lol.
Bless you If you read all that
Thank you!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I usually draw portraits that include only the head of persons, maybe a little neck or shoulder. I want to draw more dynamic art with figures. I've been studying figure drawing on my own for a good while now and I have sketchbooks filled with failed figures. I like to draw with my Wacom tablet and PSCS2. But, I am ebarrassed about how messy my figure sketches look that I never get to the part where I can correct errors. It all just looks so bad to me. This tutorial and the other you made gave me a little confidence to try it with a new perspective.
Thank you.

I don't have photoshop, but, neh. I may someday get it in the future.
So this'll be very good, thanks for posting this.
I have a question, can you just do the lineart outside of the computer?
Can you just upload a finished lineart and then begin coloring over it? Or do you have to do the lineart in the program?
And I don't understand 'layers'. But this is probably a question for a different time, ne? >_<''

scanning a hand-drawn line art will work.
after scanning, open it in photoshop and paint over in another layer (with layer style set to multiply (which is useless info till u get photoshop) haha)

Hey!
Sure you can scan a hand-drawn picture you made. But if you do, you don't need this tutorial, lol!
It's normal that you don't understand layers if you don't Photoshop or another software like it. But you can think of it as the layers of a normal drawing. The sketch below, and the more defined layers above.
Sorry for the real late reply. Do you have Photoshop yet?

Well, my scanner went kaput, so I learned to use the tablet. The Cintiq makes things a lot easier...
