Description People keep asking me for those old hair tutorials I used to have.

I don't want to take them back out because they are no longer relevant and I've found a better way, so it makes no sense to me in sharing an inferior, more uninformed method to you.

This is how I color hair now, and what's even better? I draw my own stuff for my tutorials. That is more huge to me than you'd probably understand.

Questions? feel free to ask.

hi there :waves* I have a question, with hair and finer details, photoshop makes it look so un professional and I have tried both brush and pencil, un fortunately i dont have sai or corel painter (but i have regular painter). Any advice Q-Q?

try drawing the final details with the smallest brush possible, perhaps a 1px or 2px with high flow and opacity, on a new layer in PS. Click the layer with your details and then from the menu bar (the place up on top, with File, edit, etc) go to filter > sharpen > smart sharpen. Play with the controls with the preview ON, and look at how the controls sharpen up your detail work, perhaps you may see a setting you will be satisfied with Sorry for the late reply! I'm not really on dA anymore these days.

i have a question about stages 2 and 3 of this tutorial... how do you make your lines smooth and look like they're flowing when you're inking them? i can ink skin and clothing just fine, but when it comes to hair i'm constantly at a loss... i often use the pen tool when inking, but when i use it on hair it just makes it look stiff and awful... and when i use a normal brush the lines are either too thick, squiggly or blurry((when i use a smaller brush!)) i don't know what to do your advice would be greatly appreciated!! ;---;

I dont use the pen tool, I use an ordinary brush, but I gotta ask - what program are you inking in? If it's photoshop then that's a bad idea, photoshop isn't very good at making thinly brushed lines look crisp. Try corel painter or SAI. When you're making flowing lines make sure you keep your wrist locked and use your elbow to guide you. That way you have more control over a greater distance when drawing continuous lines

Hope that helps.

yeahhh, i'm using photoshop... but corel is good with little lines?? that's VERY good to know, since sai is pc only D:

thank you SO much for the advice!! ; u ; <33

corel is much better than both sai and photoshop Its linework is very natural, and has a much quicker response to your drawing than the other two programs. Lines come out crisp, very varied and beautiful. Linework done in Corel: [link] [link] one is crisper than the other because I simply used two different styles of drawing tool, the first one is a sort of soft pencil brush and the second one is an inking brush. (: I use corel painter 11.

No problemo!

ohhhh, i'm SO happy to discover this, i've had corel on my computer for ages but never really used it... xD i just played around with it a little while ago and was so happy with the tools it has ; ^ ; it's really good for making interesting textures... <3 ((i wish i knew about its pencil tool a few months ago when i was working on a crazy animatic project for college apps -- inking would've gone 80x faster on this program xD))
do you know if painter 11 has a navigation window? O 3 o;; i can't find one...

also, i'm having some trouble drawing natural looking hair in a picture i'm working on right now, do you think you could possibly look at it and tell me how you think i could make it look correct..? .__. i have trouble deciding where clumps of hair start from... xD;;;
if you can't, i completely understand .__.

weeeeeell, i actually wound up sort of figuring out something for that picture....((though idk if i'll ever finish it now xD))

but, i AM having trouble with pant folds in a completely unrelated picture, if you're willing to look at that >___>
[link]
i know the folds are messed up on his right leg, but idk how to fix them ._.

Oh, I see. I'm so sorry I need to really answer my messages as soon as I see them. One day and it's buried and I tell myself I'd remember but I just end up forgetting.

Ah the notorious harem folds! You did a fantastic job so far. How about we take a look at a reference to see how they fold? I found these [link] and maybe this [link] or maybe these: [link]

And now I'm comparing the movement in the pants with your image and really, nothing bad stands out to me. I only see ONE subtlety you might want to change, and that'd be because of the foreshortening on his leg. The part of his leg in front dominates the part in the back, therefore the folds will move with the dominant part, not the recessive part. This is what I mean: [link]

here it is after reinking those lines:

This tutorial is really excellent. I've been teaching a friend how to draw, and one of the first things she asked me about was hair. I explained as best I could but your to tutorial is so clear and concise that it puts me to shame. ^.^

This is fantastic!!! Someday,when I have a tablet and photoshop,I will have very useful tips I can look to right here. <3 And many of them apply to basic pencil and paper as well,if you can rewire your mind to look past the 'technology' aspects. Bravo on an absolutely smashing tutorial! Thank you for having a sense of humor as well,instead of making it totally dry and straightforward.

P.S.: I also love your avatar. X3
