Description
I wanted to prove to myself that I could do something vaguely resembling cell-shading. The wolf-dragon hybrid I created for *Cideth was a good opportunity to try it. This took far longer than it felt like it should have... but I guess it wasn't bad.Lineart in Adobe Illustrator (~2 hours). Colour in Adobe PhotoShop 7.0. (~4 hours). Background rendered using new brushes given to me by =Venator-Somniorum .

I love it so much! The backround, the lighting played in, the fire, the body and shape, the claws and wings, everything! Great job!

maybe you should think about the style of the background? The photo does not fit well with the drawing right now. ^^bb I like the stylized posture, and the red lights you have made in the coloring. It's not like the typical cell shading piece, it's got alot more details than that, and somewhat flatten in some area on purpose?

No, I completely understand what you're saying (although it's not a photo - it was painted using special brushes). I know the background doesn't quite fit the style, but I was lazy and didn't put much thought into it
Mmm, yeah, some areas are "flatter" than others - I'm not all that skilled in this style, so a lot of it was accidental or inadvertent, and I was just too lazy to go back and fix it
What would you suggest for a background?

So thats not a photo, i am fooled. lol
well, for a style that's hard outline, and cell shading... I suppose a simpler background will work better than a realistic one. Perhaps one with similar quality to the shading you did on your creature?

Mmm... Perhaps... Although it's funny - actually, a lot of cell-shaded images actually have a non-cell-shaded background, but they somehow make it not very noticeable...

Usually they fade it so the character kind of separates from the background, or have so little of it, its not noticeable.

Very well done, though with the placement of the hind legs I think a terrestrial background would look better. Maybe a dark plain or meadow with bolts of lightning shooting down into the ground?

jocarra In reply to MiaGawron [2006-05-04 00:47:40 +0000 UTC]
Mm, I can sort of see that, but I'd have to change the rest of his pose entirely to accomodate for that, and get rid of the lightning gathering around the far paw/talon, I think...

MiaGawron In reply to jocarra [2006-05-06 13:50:21 +0000 UTC]
no, the pose is fine, just have a rocky background, the hind legs on a rock or a legde or something, and the hands working the magic.

Mmm, perhaps. I was thinking that's what you were referring to, but that would've been at least 5 more hours of work, and I was far too lazy to do that :b. This was, after all, only supposed to be a $10 commission - I put FAR too much work into as it is...........

lol, maybe some other time? XD
I know how that feels, i get lazy after about 30 mins if i see no improvement or production.
