does the Yakshi have 2 separate genders, or does it have one?

jocarra In reply to ZackWriter23 [2017-05-04 13:34:08 +0000 UTC]

They don't really have genders the same way the other races do, and are considered genderless (although they do have male/female plant gametes, I'm assuming, and many are probably technically hermaphrodites).

Dang that's so cool though I've got to wonder how they would look like in different biomes. I'd love to play a cactus.

Your designs are always so unique and interesting to look at! Great job on it! How much of the Endless Realms are you going to make? Are you halfway done or is this just a little bit of what's to come because I love seeing all of your work for it! :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to ChaoticNyxus [2015-01-13 22:59:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!  I'm not certain, really, but I'm likely to do most of the artwork required for the game.

Heh, no!  We're far from halfway done overall.  Done about a quarter of the artwork for the main player races, done about a quarter of the monsters for the main bestiary, and haven't done anything at all for equipment or landscapes or supporting illustrations or maps or emblems/symbols/flags/etc.

However, I'm very glad you're enjoying it!  Hope I don't disappoint

That's an awesome entity! Yes, I can see it having similar attitudes & abilities to Tree-Ents and Groot.  Fantastic ally, dangerous opponent.

Thank you very much!  I don't know too too much about their personality other than what I have posted, really, as it's one of the less developed races - Casey will probably be the one to really flesh them out.  He's a huge tree/plant person, as much as I'm an animal person :b

I'm looking forward to this game more and more as you show us what we might expect while playing.

That's awesome to hear   I wish I could post some lore, but Casey's busy doing university applications right now >_>  There's another writer doing the bulk of the lore, but Casey is likely to be sort of the "last word" writer/editor, as I understand it.

So cool, i love the design, i really like the leaf hair with the bobbles. It even has some nice little flowers in the moss. very nice design.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to qutera [2015-01-11 11:27:11 +0000 UTC]

Bobbles are always fun :3  As I mentioned to other people, I liked them partly because they're evocative of flower stamens, and could have potential use as sensory/communication organs, like pheromones or something, aside from just being decorative accents.

Flowers are tricky.  There's a stigma about them being lame and girly, but in another sense they're really about flourishing and life and growth, which I think is an important aspect of what is almost essentially an elemental race of flora-people: I tried to include tree and plant/flower aspects roughly equally.

terralux [2015-01-11 09:10:24 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thats a good looking Ent.
Though, i hope the "telepathic" doesn't work via Bio-USB like in Avatar. XD
I especially like the "featherlike" moss on the elbows and the chest/head part, so many nice ideas!
(I so had to imagine the monk meditating in the sun, while birds rest on it. Later, when it awakens again, it has birdshit all over it and cries "damn Pigeons!")

jocarra In reply to terralux [2015-01-11 11:23:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! XD No, I'm pretty sure it doesn't.  I don't know the details of it at all, but if I were to venture a guess, I feel like it would be more like they just have an inherent "feel" for the creatures around it, their emotions and surface thoughts.  I put in the sort of stamen-looking bits in the hair partly because, aside from a neat point of interest, they could possibly be a kind of sense/communication organ, maybe something pheromone related if the developers so choose.

I love moss, favourite part of a forest - it's like fur for trees and rocks :3

Haha, yeah, I can definitely see them as meditative monks, sitting for ages, getting all grown-over (even more so than usual :V), and yeah, having to fend off animals come to nest/graze from them XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

terralux In reply to jocarra [2015-01-13 17:22:41 +0000 UTC]

Could be a nice idea with these glowing bulbs as communication organ. I guess that could lead to interesting situations. Perhaps they do attract bees as well and when they communicate under a bee nest, they get surrounded by them, searching for the blooms. XD

Yeah, moss is awesome! It really is soft, but sometimes really wet as well. X)

And when they awake from their "meditating" they have to search for a new home for all their squirrels/birds/whatever. ("Don't laugh, its part of our meditating trainig.")

jocarra In reply to terralux [2015-01-13 22:33:48 +0000 UTC]

*nods*  Speaking of bees and other insects, we were discussing how the additional set of eyes they have might be devoted to helping broaden the spectrum of light visible to them.  A lot of plants use UV colours and patterns that are invisible to us, but visible to insects, and I figured it would make sense if the Yakshi could also see in UV.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

terralux In reply to jocarra [2015-01-14 16:36:37 +0000 UTC]

That would give them certainly some perception advantages and its explained good as well. But it will be hard to describe things good in UV. That would be some challenge for a gm. But nevertheless, it would be very interesting!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to terralux [2015-01-14 23:42:54 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it necessarily needs to be directly game-relevant much.  A Yakshi might be able to see hidden patterns or know something specific about the environment, but nothing particularly game breaking in a normal game setting.  A clever DM could probably make good use of it, though :b

terralux In reply to jocarra [2015-01-15 16:18:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, i guess its just a matter of "would that be possible?"
It would not be gamebreaking, but surely helpful. One reason more to play a Yakshi.
