Description Okay, let me see if I can explain this in a way that'll keep me from getting flamed.

Fandom---or maybe it's just some fandoms, but most from my experience---seem to be predominantly female. Which is not necessarily a bad thing; I'm not here to blame the girls. But I've started to observe that it makes things kind of hard for those of us with a Y-chromosome. Because, generally speaking, men and women seem to like different things; and, unsurprisingly, when a fandom is mostly female, things women like tend to be around a lot more.

Now, I really don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill; I'm not accusing any girls reading this of being part of some kind of Feminazi conspiracy to keep the men out, and I'll admit that most of the problems I'm talking about are subtle and minor on their own. They're little things, like:

A guy finds a great stamp or Plz account of their favorite male character---with little hearts surrounding his face. Needless to say, this might be awkward to display in one's profile. (Has happened to me a few times, for example, in the Invader Zim fandom.)

A guy finds the dA club for his favorite character, and even if it doesn't have an icon like that, it's name is "I-luv-(blank)" or something similarly girlish. Do you join? (A dilemma I'm facing now.)

A guy tries to find a good fanfiction or fanart, but all they can find is romance, and most of that is slash, which guys, in general, aren't interested in. They can make their own stuff, sure, but they still want to see others' work on topics they enjoy. (Out of all my fandoms, South Park would have to be the biggest offender for this one.)

A fandom becomes all about a certain male character or characters, just because fangirls tend to like that character more. (Twenty-two campers on Total Drama Island, and half of the fandom is just in it for Duncan. *sigh*) Conversely, this can be a character guy's like too, but most of the work will be geared towards girls, for example, pictures of the character half-dressed or whatever.

Again, I know I'm speaking in generalities; for example, I know there are some guys who like slash (...theoretically, anyway), and I know some girls who don't. And no, I'm also not really intending this to be another anti-yaoi stamp or something like that either, arguing that girls should stop doing these things or whatever. But what I am doing is inviting my brother fan-geeks, if they have also felt awkward in their fandoms sometimes, to use this stamp for themselves, preferably with a comment and/or fave so I know if others really feel the same way. And maybe even more, I'd like to hear from the girls, too: do you ever feel this way in your fangirl life? Most of the fandoms I'm involved with seem disproportionately female, but are there any others where this isn't the case, and you feel awkward because of it? I'm sincerely curious. (And heck, if someone wants to make a version of this with "girls" instead of "guys," feel free. )

And remember, girls: you can express yourselves without accidentally barring us boys out. Draw that badass character with his shirt on, maybe even pair him with a girl once in a while. Little steps like this can go a long way in advancing men's rights in fandom.

(P.S.: About the stamp itself: not sure about the colors. Should I have made all the words green, or all blue? This, too, is probably something the girls could be more helpful with. )

(P.P.S.: Oh yes, and I used this to help me make the stamp: [link] Thank you, O Great ~kabrotti , Maker of the Template!)

The only way I could label this critique "unfair" is for being more complimentary than this done-in-five-minutes stamp deserves.

Thanks for the kind words!

Same. I'm in the Steven Universe fandom, and it mostly consists of female fans. I do meet the occasional male fan. Though I'm slightly convinced that she show is supposed to appeal to an all-gender croud. But it is still an awesome show.
I just hope that male SU fans don't start getting bashed all the time like the bronies do. That would be a dark day.

It's especially true if you're a guy in a female-oriented fandom. I'm an active user on the Ever After High Fandom Wiki and, while I like being there, it is hard. Many of my OCs are for either fairy tales with male leads - the princess stories I used were obscure ones (like lesser-known Grimm stories and various Madame d'Aulnoy stories). While I do have more female characters for the fandom, I've paid more attention to my male characters. Still, my OCs are surrounded by ones for princess stories (half of which are for Beauty and the Beast or The Little Mermaid or other princesses who got Disney adaptations).

Actually, being a male fairy tale fan is hard in general because people seem to ignore fairy tales with male leads in favor of princess stories. Out of my three favorite stories by the Brothers Grimm (Jorinde and Joringel, The Water of Life, and The Iron Stove), only the last one has a female lead, and while The Iron Stove is a princess story, I find it to be much less girly than Cinderella or Snow White (in fact, the Ever After High OC I created for it is male). The only one people don't ignore is Jack and the Beanstalk, and I DO NOT like that story. It's largely Disney's fault because of their Disney Princess franchise. Disney did two shorts of Jack and the Beanstalk and The Brave Little Tailor, but they were Mickey Mouse shorts. (I was happy to find that Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics had a Brave Little Tailor episode with the real protagonist. Actually, GFTC had a relatively equal amount of male and female leads.) The Barbie movies are even worse offenders, since the princes in those movies were total pansies (the ones in GFTC were WAY more masculine even though most of them had long hair and wore tights and feathered hats), though at least they aren't doing fairy tales anymore.

It's hard with Pokemon too. It's hard looking up non-slash art of Morty and Falkner.

Hmmβ€”I actually enjoy fairy tales more than the average person, though I'm not really in the "fandom" for them, nor do I know much about Ever After High.Β I can see what you mean, thoughβ€”I imagine most of the fans will be female.

I can totally relate to your stamp and group issues. It can be difficult to find stamps/groups for my favorite male characters that don't have hearts on them. I've chosen to sometimes give in anyway and shamelessly take the heart as a symbol that I'm a fan rather than a symbol of some sort of crush. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has encountered this.

Moguryuu [2012-07-17 08:04:26 +0000 UTC]

Totally not a guy here, but in general, I agree. I mean some of the things you pointed out are a little silly, like the little hearts and the 'i luv' stuff (i find those things more immature than anything else lmao), but when it comes to the last two points aw hell ya have a brofist. Like with the last point, I have a character that I really adore, and even though he's a guy, he doesn't get any love because he's not considered good looking. He has a great personality, fascinating backstory, but nope he gets shoved aside for males who are, while they are good characters in their own right, oftentimes not appreciated for their better qualities. Its hard being in fandoms since I like characters that aren't liked and for that I sympathize with you!

Also I find myself hating fem/slash if its popular, but if its crack or (in some cases. a lot of slash stories are rather unhealthy imo) canon I tend to actually be a big fan of it.

But yeah, I'd totally use this if I was a guy

Not male (though wouldn't call myself a fangirl, as I hate that word and its connotations...), but yes, I can relate with those points
Haha, the first point of yours - DAMN I KNOW. I look at the 'favorite characters' section of my stamp collection and I can't help feeling a little awkward due to those little hearts people have put in some of the stamps.
Also many (if not even most) female fans seem to come across as...overly-enthusiastic?
I'm not really against people doing these things though (they should be allowed to do what they want, I think), it's just something that irks me a little.

This is why when I ship, I try to make the pic look platonic so it's up to commenter! XD I mean, I ship yaoi, yuri, and het dependin gon mood (and only fluff not pornz). But even if I ship two guys, they're still going to play some sport or even play some games (Halo, Modern Warefare, Asasin's creed, etc) as their "dates" . even battle eachother out/train. No semeuke (cept for one. LOL).

IDK, I ship for fun and giggles and that's why I don't really ship seriously! XD To me, all ships have their respective poor stereotypes (Yes, this includes yaoi, yuri, and het). Considering when being a writer, you mainly take characteristic/features of real life people...yeah. Steretypes will sort of ensue and I don't really see how since you aren't duplicating another person but taking small bits of character from different people.

Well, I think that you’re getting flamed because you have an issue with FANDOM itself. The majority of fandom centers on character-love and shipping. That’s how it works, really. I haven’t met a single female OR male who doesn’t have a specific character they like, one they lust after, and a couple they are into.

Frankly, I don’t know a lot of guys that have an issue with this. Maybe it is because most men know what they are getting into? The same way a girl like me, who is very much into hentai (porn) knows what she is getting into. I know that the majority of it is going to be male-dominant and the women are going to be badly represented, but I find good stuff in between and I don’t get too irked since I know what I am in for. Does this make sense?

If you are not secure enough in your masculinity and sexuality to join a group named β€œI Love Character” that is YOUR issue. The β€œlove” can easily mean non-romantic. My boyfriend is straight and has no problem with this. I don’t mean to criticize, I mean it. However, if that bothers you, I would really re-evaluate myself…

Well, fanfiction is usually clearly marked. Are you looking for completely non-romantic stories? I haven’t found many. Even most published books have some semblance of romance because romance is a part of life. In fact, some of the best ship-writers I have ever seen are in fact male. So again, I am at a loss.

*snort* OF COURSE South Park is majority slash-fans! The main cast is primarily male! Lol. That’s why the majority of ships in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic are femslash, because the β€œmane six” are all girls! We pair what we are given, don’t we? There are people who pair men and women in South Park, but shows like that use a lot of gay jokes and Ho-Yay innuendo as the crux of their show and it leaves a lot to fan-imagination. What do you expect? *wink, wink*

Just so you know, not all of us are sniveling fangirls. Being a fangirl is not the equivalent of having a lobotomy, nor is being a slash-fan or having a crush on an animated character. Surprisingly enough, many of us are very nice and have lives outside of our overactive inner fantasies. Personally, I have a real-life boyfriend as well as mentally dating the titular character of Dan Vs. *giggles*

By the way, I don’t watch Total Drama for Duncan. I watch it for Courtney. She’s a hot piece of ass and Duncney is the sexiest love-hate BDSM couple of ALL TIME.

JoeMerl In reply to RainbowPlatypus [2012-04-06 06:43:25 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I don't think I ever did get flamed for this. And oddly enough, most of the positive comments seem to have come from girls...

I admit, the overly-long comments I made for this stamp probably come off a bit confused, because even as I wrote them I wasn't entirely sure what I was trying to say. I am a shipper, but I'm also kind of frustrated when fandom does nothing but shipping. I don't want to be a jerk telling people what to and not to do, but what everyone else does annoys me. Numerous contradictory opinions that just made me frustrated at the time.

As I recall, I was specifically annoyed about South Park fandom when I made this. Actually, now that you've made me think about it, I realize that I sort of approach SP differently than other shows---I see it as more plot-driven than character-driven, I guess, so the abundance of romance-without-plot in this fandom annoys me more than it would in others. I understand why there's a lot of slash shipping, but for SP I would like less shipping in general; sappy teenage romance stories are just kind of antithetical to why I enjoy SP in the first place. (Though again, I'm not trying to make some sort of "no shipping" fiat...I have SP shipfics myself. We're back to confusing contradictions.)

So...yeah. This whole thing is probably best read as just one long, frustrated growl of annoyance for the particular moment I wrote it, rather than some sort of treatise on fandom or something.

RainbowPlatypus In reply to JoeMerl [2012-04-07 06:00:58 +0000 UTC]

South Park in particular was a joy for me because while it is comedy, they use mental issues as the comedy and it's easy to flip the entire thing right on its head and look at it through new eyes. I have been working on a fanfiction with Cartman for a couple years. Its slash, but mostly it focuses on his struggle with body issues. I was also toying with one focusing on Butter's abuse. His parents are INSANE.

Yeah,I get that feeling a lot. Sometimes fans can be annoying. They get too into something and too invested. Its almost like they can't enjoy it anymore.

I'm a female ( yet again, I can't really be slapped under the ''female'' role ), and I feel more than just awkward in those fandoms sometimes I mean, am I the only one who just wants to watch those animes and discuss what happens in them or see a couple of drawings with video game characters in ''natural surroundings'' ( meaning, kicking some monster's butt ), not immediately get involved in the ''they are so hot'' madness ( when I even don't like guys, lol )? I'm okay with seeing Dante Sparda shirtless under the coat ( because he is shirtless under the coat in most games ), but I am most certainly not okay seeing Dante and Vergil Sparda naked and doing... well, you got it, I hope
So, seeing what happens around, I can clearly understand that guys who land in any fandom, feel awkward

What scares me most in the female-dominated fandoms, however, is how absolutely everything can be turned into slash. Ever tried searching for fanart with your favourite band ( especially if it's about any ''masked'' bands ) and seeing how the first most popular entries are slashes? Neveragain... I can live perfectly well without seeing two guys who aren't even imagined and are straight in real life grabbing each other's ass in those pictures >.<

I'm sorry, I am not sure if this doesn't sound like bashing slashes and such >.< The basic idea is that I agree with this stamp even if I'm a female
I think I shall fav this as well
