Description Okay, let me see if I can explain this in a way that'll keep me from getting flamed.

Fandom---or maybe it's just some fandoms, but most from my experience---seem to be predominantly female. Which is not necessarily a bad thing; I'm not here to blame the girls. But I've started to observe that it makes things kind of hard for those of us with a Y-chromosome. Because, generally speaking, men and women seem to like different things; and, unsurprisingly, when a fandom is mostly female, things women like tend to be around a lot more.

Now, I really don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill; I'm not accusing any girls reading this of being part of some kind of Feminazi conspiracy to keep the men out, and I'll admit that most of the problems I'm talking about are subtle and minor on their own. They're little things, like:

A guy finds a great stamp or Plz account of their favorite male character---with little hearts surrounding his face. Needless to say, this might be awkward to display in one's profile. (Has happened to me a few times, for example, in the Invader Zim fandom.)

A guy finds the dA club for his favorite character, and even if it doesn't have an icon like that, it's name is "I-luv-(blank)" or something similarly girlish. Do you join? (A dilemma I'm facing now.)

A guy tries to find a good fanfiction or fanart, but all they can find is romance, and most of that is slash, which guys, in general, aren't interested in. They can make their own stuff, sure, but they still want to see others' work on topics they enjoy. (Out of all my fandoms, South Park would have to be the biggest offender for this one.)

A fandom becomes all about a certain male character or characters, just because fangirls tend to like that character more. (Twenty-two campers on Total Drama Island, and half of the fandom is just in it for Duncan. *sigh*) Conversely, this can be a character guy's like too, but most of the work will be geared towards girls, for example, pictures of the character half-dressed or whatever.

Again, I know I'm speaking in generalities; for example, I know there are some guys who like slash (...theoretically, anyway), and I know some girls who don't. And no, I'm also not really intending this to be another anti-yaoi stamp or something like that either, arguing that girls should stop doing these things or whatever. But what I am doing is inviting my brother fan-geeks, if they have also felt awkward in their fandoms sometimes, to use this stamp for themselves, preferably with a comment and/or fave so I know if others really feel the same way. And maybe even more, I'd like to hear from the girls, too: do you ever feel this way in your fangirl life? Most of the fandoms I'm involved with seem disproportionately female, but are there any others where this isn't the case, and you feel awkward because of it? I'm sincerely curious. (And heck, if someone wants to make a version of this with "girls" instead of "guys," feel free. )

And remember, girls: you can express yourselves without accidentally barring us boys out. Draw that badass character with his shirt on, maybe even pair him with a girl once in a while. Little steps like this can go a long way in advancing men's rights in fandom.

(P.S.: About the stamp itself: not sure about the colors. Should I have made all the words green, or all blue? This, too, is probably something the girls could be more helpful with. )

(P.P.S.: Oh yes, and I used this to help me make the stamp: [link] Thank you, O Great ~kabrotti , Maker of the Template!)

I totally get it. I'm a girl who likes action-sci-fi-adventure, and as I fail to find any fandoms that aren't riddled with slash and yaoi (I'm straight. Guy-on-guy does nothing for me), I'm forced to revert back to my own OCs and original universe to create all the stuff I like.

It's frustrating really, I mean, I like hot shirtless guys as much as the next girl, but that doesn't mean I want my fav character to me deminished to a rabid fangirl's mental sex fantasy. It's disgusting. I want action and a good storyline dammit!

Great stamp and fun discussion

Yes, exactly. Unfortunate how I had to go with more-exclusive "guy" here, but "not an insane yaoi fangirl" just didn't fit.

Anyway, thanks!

Well, NoCo would be under the "stuff girls like" category too, wouldn't it? And this might be more true for fanfiction than fanart, really...scrolling down the TDI section of Fanfiction.net can be a bit depressing if you're not particularly interested in DunCourt or DunGwen.

Even though, I'm a female, I what you mean by it being hard to be a guy in some fandoms. I have noticed that the fans are usually female. And, i'm not much of a slash fan, either. And i do get kinda tired of seeing the shirtless pics of male characters.

I completely agree with you, that's how I feel a lot of the time. Especially in the Phineas & Ferb fandom. Honestly, as much as I love Doof, it baffles me that he has SO many fangirls who think he's cute or sexy. I mean, JUST LOOK AT HIM!

icedcaramelcoffee In reply to ??? [2010-06-01 01:41:29 +0000 UTC]

Aw, I get where you're coming from. I mean, I'm female, and I like slash, sure. Of course, most of the fandoms I'm a part of are geared towards people like me, but there are some male-oriented or gender neutral ones (from South Park, to Zombieland, to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, even freaking How To Train Your Dragon...), and all I can find, on first glance, is slash. It's a bit confusing, to be honest.

Even if you're like slash, there's no good excuse to not expand your horizons and write other things, I say, and you're probably just a weak author if it's all you've got.

Maybe it's because most of the people on FFN are slash fangirls and if you really want reviews it's what you've got to write?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeMerl In reply to icedcaramelcoffee [2010-06-01 01:47:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm the same way, I like to try new things and experiment with different kinds of stories. And some of the slash-oriented fandoms are odd---I'm sort of surprised that many girls even watch South Park. I guess fart jokes cross the gender line after all.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Spoi-kreb In reply to JoeMerl [2010-08-30 03:32:30 +0000 UTC]

I really don't understand the fangirl base for South Park, I just don't get it! Just, WTF?!
And why are they making slash for it?! They're in, I don't know, 4th grade!
It's just- agh! *dies from headache*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeMerl In reply to Spoi-kreb [2010-08-30 03:42:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, South Park is the one that confuses me the most. I mean...SP has female fans? It's just a weird contrast, from a show where the boys go around calling each other "fags" to fanfiction where they...are.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Spoi-kreb In reply to JoeMerl [2010-08-30 04:07:34 +0000 UTC]

JoeMerl In reply to Spoi-kreb [2010-08-30 04:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, Cartman is...odd, to say the least. Possibly bisexual. All the main characters have had crushes on girls at various points, and all the boys had a crush on Bebe for a while. Plus we keep getting reminded that Butters is straight.

Spoi-kreb In reply to JoeMerl [2010-08-30 05:17:14 +0000 UTC]

Dunno if it's been said yet because I'm too lazy to read all the comments, but you might want to think about differentiating between straight and queer guys. A lot of this stuff applies to me, for example, but I'm a fan of the slash. Obviously. Perhaps you should consider saying "It's hard to be a straight guy in my fandom." Though...shit, that just make you sound bicurious? XD Sorry, man. I'll shut up.

(Oh, and lose the red; it's hard to read anything. Make the background light blue or green. Then the text darker blue and green to stand against it. Or inverse that, with a dark BG. Good luck!)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JoeMerl In reply to pedal [2010-03-29 01:51:33 +0000 UTC]

You make a good point. Though to be honest, I almost never see gay men write slash; it always seems to be girls. I don't know why.

And thanks for the advice; not sure if I'll change it, but I did notice myself that the colors had some problems.

FuyuViech [2010-02-12 17:09:17 +0000 UTC]

I think the minority of something, may it be a fandom, music genre or anything else always has to bear disadvantages by not enjoying as much fanwork or whatever as others.
And I guess the problem in here is, that most people are either homophobic or extremely homofanatic, which means they only do hetero/yaoi/yuri stuff of their favourite characters until they get bored of it while being intolerant to other stuff. And that means if they only have eyes for the things they're into, they don't even look at any other art to possibly develop new interests.

But is it really necessary to pair everything up? :c If you care about the fact that most people having cartoon or anime fandoms are teenies ( at least in my experience) you could blame their hormones in some kind of way :/
Well I'm one of those puberting girls who like yaoi, too, even though I enjoy neutral series, action, comedy and so on at least as much as drawing that pairing stuff.
In the end it's okay to like whatever appeals to you, even if that means to belong to a smaller group of people with same interests. You can always try to gather those who like the same stuff, and increase a fandom group

I actually hate every invader zim pairing because the series are pure crude humor, thereΒ΄s no place for real love in crude humor...

JoeMerl In reply to haydenchristensenfan [2010-01-18 05:46:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, a lot of people say that. I do like some romance, but only when it stays at least sort-of in-character (which for IZ means either very dark or amusingly stupid, of course).

Thanks for the !

I think the Sonic fandom is about 50-50, maybe even more male oriented. Unfortunately... it's full of idiots. Sometimes you just can't win.

That's... not quite what makes the idiots of the Sonic fandom idiots...

"OMG J.GRIFF RULES! RYAN SUCKS!!"

"NUH-UH! J.GRIFF SUCKS! RYAN IS THE BEST SONIC EVAR!!!"

"...I like Urkel."

"PFFT! HE SUCKS!!"

Oh, and for the record... I would probably be the guy that likes Urkel as Sonic's VA.

I do agree with you though about the bad writing. Every fandom's got their crazies and noobs.

Here's another: look at all the people that are still pissed at the name "Eggman", despite the fact that there's plenty of evidence that it's always been there if they look... and they want to bring the name "Robotnik" back even when they can't even spell it. *rolls eyes*
