Description Okay, let me see if I can explain this in a way that'll keep me from getting flamed.

Fandom---or maybe it's just some fandoms, but most from my experience---seem to be predominantly female. Which is not necessarily a bad thing; I'm not here to blame the girls. But I've started to observe that it makes things kind of hard for those of us with a Y-chromosome. Because, generally speaking, men and women seem to like different things; and, unsurprisingly, when a fandom is mostly female, things women like tend to be around a lot more.

Now, I really don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill; I'm not accusing any girls reading this of being part of some kind of Feminazi conspiracy to keep the men out, and I'll admit that most of the problems I'm talking about are subtle and minor on their own. They're little things, like:

A guy finds a great stamp or Plz account of their favorite male character---with little hearts surrounding his face. Needless to say, this might be awkward to display in one's profile. (Has happened to me a few times, for example, in the Invader Zim fandom.)

A guy finds the dA club for his favorite character, and even if it doesn't have an icon like that, it's name is "I-luv-(blank)" or something similarly girlish. Do you join? (A dilemma I'm facing now.)

A guy tries to find a good fanfiction or fanart, but all they can find is romance, and most of that is slash, which guys, in general, aren't interested in. They can make their own stuff, sure, but they still want to see others' work on topics they enjoy. (Out of all my fandoms, South Park would have to be the biggest offender for this one.)

A fandom becomes all about a certain male character or characters, just because fangirls tend to like that character more. (Twenty-two campers on Total Drama Island, and half of the fandom is just in it for Duncan. *sigh*) Conversely, this can be a character guy's like too, but most of the work will be geared towards girls, for example, pictures of the character half-dressed or whatever.

Again, I know I'm speaking in generalities; for example, I know there are some guys who like slash (...theoretically, anyway), and I know some girls who don't. And no, I'm also not really intending this to be another anti-yaoi stamp or something like that either, arguing that girls should stop doing these things or whatever. But what I am doing is inviting my brother fan-geeks, if they have also felt awkward in their fandoms sometimes, to use this stamp for themselves, preferably with a comment and/or fave so I know if others really feel the same way. And maybe even more, I'd like to hear from the girls, too: do you ever feel this way in your fangirl life? Most of the fandoms I'm involved with seem disproportionately female, but are there any others where this isn't the case, and you feel awkward because of it? I'm sincerely curious. (And heck, if someone wants to make a version of this with "girls" instead of "guys," feel free. )

And remember, girls: you can express yourselves without accidentally barring us boys out. Draw that badass character with his shirt on, maybe even pair him with a girl once in a while. Little steps like this can go a long way in advancing men's rights in fandom.

(P.S.: About the stamp itself: not sure about the colors. Should I have made all the words green, or all blue? This, too, is probably something the girls could be more helpful with. )

(P.P.S.: Oh yes, and I used this to help me make the stamp: [link] Thank you, O Great ~kabrotti , Maker of the Template!)

Yeah... I'm a girl, and the only show I really like slash is South Park... Mostly because there are so few girls to work with... And I don't go as far as some of these fangirls do... But, I am kinda sick of ZaDr... fangirls slash everything. ._. So far, I know one "fandom" untouched by slash. I prefer drawing and writing for this . I have a FF.net account, but I just isolate myself from other writings and write my stuff for IZ and stuff like that...

Love your explanation by the way

And, more to say, I made 2 girl OCs in South Park for the specific reason that I could write something without slash... Most of what I draw and write is het, since in most of my fandoms, slash just wouldn't work... It'd be weird. And my slash, anyway, is more like 12 year olds having crushes on each other... I'm a fangirl, but not rabid, I swear...

I wouldn't mind so much if it weren't so common...South Park kind of annoys me the most, just because it's downright hard to find anything that isn't slash. Then even harder if you're like me and aren't crazy for Stan/Wendy or Cartman/Wendy; heck, a good genfic is rare in any fandom.

Thanks.

AnimeDNA In reply to JoeMerl [2011-06-07 05:20:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... But with the lack of girls in the show, it's hard to do. Token/Wendy is the only other obvious het pairing with Wendy... And then Kyle/Bebe comes to mind... And less common Clyde/Bebe... Really, that's basically all you'd have to work with.. And if you're not so crazy about the girl in question (in my case, Bebe) then your options are cut in half

Heh. I'm not a guy, however, I've faced something... well, to be frank, practically the opposite. I tend to like animes geared towards guys, and half the guys are in it for how hot some girl is or how big her boobs are or something stupid like that XD

I can definitely see where you're coming from

Hmm, interesting. I can see that...that's something in general that bugs me, when fans are so distracted by how a character looks that they ignore how good or bad the actual story/characterization/etc. is.

Aaaand the reason why I don't usually join clubs for things I'm interested in. I joined a Kingdom Hearts club, but I ended up unwatching the deviations because of the massive amounts of slash between the male characters, like at least 50 new drawings each day! It just got too much for me to stand >.<

I'm a girl btw

I'm a girl and I must say, it's actually hard to find a guy in the Naruto fandom. Even though it's shonen. And directed at guys. XD
When I look for fanart, I'm more expecting fighting and action pictures, heck, maybe even some chibies here and there, but all I end up getting is slash. I like slash and everything, and SasuNaru's okay, but I really don't think it's going to turn into a shounen ai or romance manga. Sure, it's got a few shipping hints throughout the series (obvious ones include NaruSaku, NaruHina and LeeSaku) but it's mainly about ninjas fighting. XD

i'm a girl and i agree cause personally in the South Park fandom is yaoi and i don't really like yaoi that much, and pratically if i type in "Stan" or any other character, mostly it's Stan with another boy (mostly Kyle) And to me personally, i want to find fan-art that isn't mostly romance, 'cause South park isn't a drama show, it's a comedy (it's mostly like that with shows i watch and yet most of the fan-art is guysXguys)

I FEEL YOUR PAIN. I FEEL YOUR PAIN, DUDE. I am female, but I am NOT in to slash. I'm in to the show for how funny it is. What the actual fuck is this Style Kyman etc. thing? SOUTH PARK WAS NOT MADE FOR GAY TEENAGE DRAMA.

FenderInStyle [2011-01-20 20:11:59 +0000 UTC]

Hell, I have an X-chromosome, and even I get embarassed by the people of my gender when it comes to fandoms. It's probably because how ever since I was little, I was a huge tomboy (still am). Or some other reason.

For instance, the South Park fandom. I've read some of the fanfiction, and GOD! If Matt and Trey saw what most of their fanbase is, I bet they're insulted! Their fanbase is no longer adults looking for dark comedy and kids who learn too much and celebrity parodies, it's rabid fangirls who treat the show as if it's an anime where there are no such thing as females or heterosexuality or even bisexuality, all the boys have a life-quest for "gay buttsecks", and-ugh!

I like slash, I do, but I like the SANE side that doesn't do the above, has spelling and grammar, and a story!

So then I made a parody fanfic called "It's now called FAGfiction" to show what has happened to South Park fanfiction. (If you wanna check it out-[link] ) I got some comments from fans who were glad to see that I can like Slash Park and still make fun of it at the same time.

But then all these asshurt fangirls come on and cry "BAWWWW YOU MEAN HYPOCRITE. DEY IS IN LUV. U HAVE NO RESPECT FOR US GOOD WRITERS."

I was like- for they were wasting time on a fanfic that they could've easily ignored.

So ya, I feel sorry for you guys. This is why I write slash, but not ALL THE TIME. I create clubs like "The Bender Shrine" or something for BOTH genders. And of course, I like all kinds of characters and pairings.

JoeMerl In reply to FenderInStyle [2011-01-20 21:00:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I once had a review saying that a fic of mine made somebody "sad." When I asked why, it was because the story posited the radical concept that Damien might be heterosexual. I was like . I sort of hope she was kidding...

Anyway, thanks. Nice to know I'm not the only one annoyed by the weirdness in that (and other) fandoms.

I really sympathise with you on this one. I've been involved with Furry Fandom since around 2003 and I'm female, so when I started out I was even more of a minority than males are in fandom in general. Even now it's a similar sort of situation, for every 100 or so con attendees you'll get.. on average 6 females. Thing is, I think most people who contribute to fandom do so because there is an idea, or an appreciation within them that is itching to get out onto the internet wilderness, so there's not much space in that process to really consider your target demographics. Looking back on this process of inspiration you see that it's not about the fandom at all, it's about the work or subject of interest itself. That's the bit to keep focused on. The way I see it, being a minority in the furry fandom, I'm glad that I don't have that sense of 'fitting in' to the community. At worst, it could only distract me from what I'm really there for, the art and the interest and inspiration behind it.

JoeMerl In reply to hawkwhite [2011-01-09 22:21:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...I admit, I don't really know what I'm trying to say with this stamp, since "stop doing stuff I don't like" doesn't exactly come off as a reasonable or fair response. Still, it's very frustrating sometimes. The best we fandom minorities can do, I guess, is just do what we like and hope that it catches on or something.

I completely understand, especially that yaoi bit. I can't even type in the name of any male character from the Devil May Cry series because practically all you get is that yaoi crap. And it doesn't help that the series is mostly made up of male characters. *curls up into a ball and weeps*

JoeMerl In reply to shewolf51 [2011-01-08 01:24:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I notice the male:female character ratio has a lot to do with it. Unfortunately most series tend to have more guy than gal characters by default, so...

shewolf51 In reply to JoeMerl [2011-01-09 21:03:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, though it's a shame that the yaoi fangirls don't stick to yaoi manga where they don't have to make up absurd excuses for why they think a character is gay for another.

Me: But they try to kill each other.
Yaoi Fangirl: That's just for show, they really love each other. *sparkle airheaded type expression*
Me: Did you even play the game? They try to kill each other in private too!

Liek, yeah, there's so much sexual tension there, isn't there!!1!

shewolf51 In reply to JoeMerl [2011-01-09 21:23:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I get what you mean. Most protagonists and antagonists are more hell bent on tearing each others throats out.

But what really bugs me about the whole yaoi thing is instances where the pairings are just cringe worthy. Ones where identical twins or alter egos are paired together, and pedophilia (there's one book series where it's just infested with pairing of a 40 year old man with a preteen-teenage boy). I'm not saying these things don't happen in heterosexual pairings as well, they're just so much more common in yaoi pairings from what I've seen.

I think it operates under the following formula:

1.) At least one of these characters would never willingly have sex with the other.

2.) But, them having sex would be totally smexxy!!1!1

3.) Therefore, Character 1 will force Character 2 to have sex with him.

4.) But Character 2 will enjoy it, so it's, liek, not bad or anything. Because raep ttly works that way!!1!11

I believe the reason girl's do more malexmale slash than guys do femalexfemale slash, is also because they like you said, aint into the romantic so much. Also, I don't say this is everyone, but I think girls use a more softer way of drawing most of the time, if you know how i mean. Cutish, guys don't like the romance and such so they don't draw such things. Therefor yaoi is seen even more.

Don't hate the fangirls, geez. I don't mean you then, but people who bash them. They have their own opinions and own free will. They draw that if they want to. If you want any other art, then you draw it, and people will follow you
