Oh, Claire... this is really not a good look for you at all, young lady!

It is ten to six the next morning after Claire has stolen and then drunk enough of her mother's brandy that she passes out and is deeply asleep mere minutes before her alarm clock is due to go off.

If only someone with any influence with Claire could see her now and be so appalled at the poor girl's condition that he or she takes charge of the situation before it gets any worse!

Would that person be her mother? Mrs Brompton is the most likely, possibly only, individual to find Claire in this state, being the only other inhabitant of the house at the moment, but with Claire nearly 14 and a typical teenager would she listen to her mother? Would Mrs Brompton be forced to resort to a more direct intervention and create a rift between mother and daughter that only drives Claire deeper into drink?

Two other people with any hope of having a positive effect on Claire's motivation to escape this destructive dependence on alcohol are: (1) Greg, her boyfriend; (2) Holly, her best friend since very early childhood. But how can either of them ever discover Claire in this pitiful condition when, firstly, there is no way Greg will be staying overnight at her house until they are much older and, secondly, Claire never suggests to Holly to have a sleepover at her place anymore because of this exact situation, and always has an excuse ready for when Holly suggests it herself.

Is there anyone else in Claire's life to inspire a change in these ways she has slipped into?
