I liked Myst...
It always sort of scared me when I first played it- I kept expecting something to jump out at me.
I was like, 8 when I first played it...It wasn't until I was about 13 that I could appreciate it.

Oh, I looooooove the Myst games. I'm about halfway through Revelation right now. I need to go back and replay Uru, since I didn't know about the 'take pictures in game and save them for permanent' function of the wrist bracelet until AFTER I'd finished it and had reinstalled it for the expansion packs. *siiiiiiigh*
1. I don't use guide books. I use UHS: Universal Hint System ( [link] ), which has hints for ALL games, not just PC.
2. D'ni shows up for real in Uru.
3. I think you should do one of these for the Nancy Drew mystery games (another favorite series of mine)...just so I can see how you make fun of it. I promise not to be offended.

Finally someone else who enjoyed Myst (and sequels, i played them all, just for the surroundings). i always get funny looks from my friends when i say i like this game. Obviously if you don't have a gun, sword or magical powers it's can't be a game....
and i so agree on -5-, i've completed the whole bloody game without resorting to walkthroughs except for the very last part: how was i supposed to know you had to add those ridiculous pages to one of the books? But at least the first game did make more sense than Riven. I mean: c'mon, animal noises?

Men, This was great! you see, I'm a great fan of the MYST series and have played and replayed all the titles to the end.
I liked this comic because it is the absolute truth! I've never though of MYST from this point of view, and I have to admit that frame 7 happens constantly in my life. I just need to say that I've played the game and everybody starts calling me a nerd! oh well...
Nice work! It's pretty clever!

Amen!
I personally haven't played any of the sequels, but I agree with everything else!
About panel #5: Are you referring to the grid puzzle thingy in the fireplace of the library? That's the only puzzle that seems to be completely unsolvable without a guide. The piano puzzle isn't difficult to figure out, it's getting the sliders exactly right that's the damn problem! Though, maybe there's some arbitrary clue you need to piece together to solve it yourself. I'll have to play it again one of these days and see.
Otherwise, you win at life!

The puzzle that stumped me was sound based. A noise was associated with each point on the compass and you had to use it to navigate a maze.
Trouble was; the clue to that was on another Age and very obscure.
The fireplace puzzle was pretty easy as you get TOLD the combination

TaktarTheLombax In reply to jollyjack [2008-02-22 15:55:01 +0000 UTC]
nah, that one of the underground rail at Selenitic Age was quite easy. You just needed to memorize which sound is what direction, since you have only one path to go on the first five stops it is easy to figure the res out!
MYST is incredibly easy. I can't say the same about the sequels though... The hardest one of the series is "Riven - The Sequel to Myst" (I had headaches for a week after I finished the game)

Grrr! The Van Helsing comic/movie was not the first instance of a persecuted thing going into a windmill to be burned by angry fearful villagers! Read a damn book, or at least view the original film that inspired that sequence (I just know you're thinking of Young Frankenstein, aren't you?).
Van Helsing was an expertly done hommage to classic monster movies, it deftly weaved together 3 classic tales (all it needed was an invisable man and a mummy), but it was not the origin!
Read Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, or at least rent the classic Boris Karloff and Vincent Price movies. That will give you a proper education.

Aha, I just re-discovered this game. Wonderfully simple.
I first got myst when I was about, oh, 7 maybe. The music and atmosphere in that forest place scared me shitless. Especially the spikey clamp thing. What was that for, anyway?
My friend and her brother, who both go to a selective highschool and are freakin' brainiacs, finished Exile in one sitting. It was amazing. I must admit I liked exile better - far less intimidating, and there were cute little fuzzy things.

what puzzles you talken about cus i have never run into any one i couldn't solve in any game but the 4th one cus there is a monkey part that requires calling monkeys and i have bad timing but the bubbles were fun?

wanderlustartist In reply to EllriNidhogg [2008-01-19 00:13:16 +0000 UTC]
Umm, dude, there weren't any monkeys in the first Myst game? There weren't even any freakin' animals. In the rerelease you see some butterflies and I think a few insects, but thats it.
You might be thinking of Exile, the 3rd game, there was a lil white furry chipmunk thing that you needed it to make a chirpping sound so the red plants would swell...
In Myst, in the Selenic age, there was the bitch-ass maze that you had to navigate by sound. And I tried it, several times, nearly picking up my entire PC and throwing it out the window!
Also the fireplace combination, that was NOT fun, you aren't given any clues in any of the journals. Just a slightly burned book with almost 200 combinations! Atrus does love his little locks.
I was also sad that the rocket ship didn't actually go anywhere. Oh yes, that blasted organ! You do find the code, but getting the tones just right takes someone who isn't tone deaf.
But he's right, the first is still the best. I loved the roatating temple in Riven and the rollercoaster rides. I loved the various ways to die by Savedro's primmitive rock hammer; but I have to say, nothing brings up more nostalgia than exploring the peaceful island of Myst.

Rivendude In reply to ??? [2008-01-06 05:14:29 +0000 UTC]
As you can tell by my name, I'm a big Myst fan. I first played it way back when at a young age and got totally entranced by the art and intelligence of the experience.
In terms of difficulty, Myst in retrospect is pathetically easy when compared with Riven or Revelation. What made it cool, at least for me, was the level of thought that was put into the art and gameplay. Myst was made as a kind of rebuttal to D&D specifically, and more so the typical, and still thriving world of fantasy art. (Robyn Miller said so in a recent article)
The idea was to present adventure in an environment that catered to the mind and did so in a familiar yet refreshing new way. It was allegorical, it was inventive, and it was humourous (to a certain degree). Still, I wish there were more games today that sought to the same level of maturity as Myst did 15 years ago.
Of course, what Myst did , Riven did 5 times over and better with all the crap filtered out. Nothing has come close to Riven in its sheer artistic and intellectual brilliance since. (God bless Mr. Vander Wende!)
Great comic though. It's good to know that there are still people who actually remember this series!

Ok, so big question that no one seems to have a good answer too, what is written on the walls of the rotating temple?

I think that summed up Myst perfectly. Someday, when I win that $392,234,565,778,000,000.23
Jackpot prize, I'm gonna build a Myst Island, and retire there, where even the simplest acts, such as say, flushing the toilet requires one to activate the windmill, to run the water pumps, which you have to activate in a specific sequence..... ah. The good days.

What I'm still curious about was why the big gear was open when you first go the the island...was that from Gehn kidnapping Catherine? But why would he even need to go to the umm big gear fortress, crap forgot the name? Because he had a linking book that went to either his 23rd age or to Prison Island, right?
Sorry, I tend to over think this sometimes...
